‘Survivor: Philippines’ Power Rankings: Round Two

The Rules:Each week Kat and Gordon will create separate Power Rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the two players will earn. For example, if Artis is voted out this week, Kat will receive 9 points and Gordon will receive 11 points. The person with the most points at the end of the season will be crowned the ‘Survivor: Philippines’ Power Rankings champion!

Last Week: “Survivor: One World” favorite Kat Edorsson had Roxanne in spot ten, while I nailed it, placing her in spot seventeen. So, the current score is Team Kat: 10, Team Awesome Thunder 17.

Before we get into this week’s rankings, let’s check in with this season’s challenger…

Gordon Holmes: Hey Kat, great job last week. I want to thank you so much for stepping up to the Power Rankings plate. What’ve you been up to since “One World”?
Kat Edorsson: I have been fantastic since “One World”! Finishing up college, last semester at UCF and just enjoying life with my girls (Kim, Chelsea, Alicia, and Sabrina). Our cast has continued to stay extremely close and we see each other pretty often so I can’t complain!

Holmes: This three-tribe format is much different from your “two tribes divided by sex living on the same beach” format. How would you have handled life with Matsing?
Edorsson: Wow, this season is going to get “weird.” I have a feeling they will not be as loving as “One World.” This season it is all about placing. I have social media skills so I highly doubt I would ever be on the “outs” of an alliance. However, with Matsing my favorite alliance of the season is Malcolm and Denise so I would probably wiggle my way in the twosome and make it a PG-13 threesome real quick!
Holmes: How about Tandang?
Edorsson: With Tandang I really enjoy watching Skupin and RC, I feel like they are dominant players.  I would team up with them until we made it to the merge.
Holmes: And Kalabaw?
Edorsson: Well, I like Dana and Katie but I haven’t seen much from them. I might have been the odd ball on this tribe, but Penner seems like he’s really playing the game. Right now it’s not just a one-man show, so these tribes are definitely different than “One World” and I wouldn’t feel as confident as I did with my five-woman alliance I had on Salani. It looks like when the merge comes there will be chaos which will be so exciting to watch!

Holmes: And finally, sometimes trash talk breaks out during the Power Rankings. It’s a shame. Do you think we can remain civil while I defeat you?
Edorsson: (Laughs) Very funny! Of course we will remain friends. I’ve never been good at reading the balls in the outfield, so don’t mind me if I get my butt kicked during Power Rankings on my own show! You would think we would be pros at this by now! Anywho let the best person win, Gordon my friend. Bring it on!

 1. Malcolm: Oh, Mr. Cuddles, don’t be alarmed! There is nothing wrong with finding warmth, for the record! Going into week three you would think Malcolm would be low on the totem pole because of the stunt they pulled last week. However seeing how Malcolm kept his composure during Tribal still keeps my faith! Also, I believe he will take his own advice and NOT be “Booty blinded” and cut those ties loose and get back into the game!  1. Malcolm: OK, I keep telling myself that Malcolm isn’t “Booty blinded,” being “Blinded by the headlights,” or in a “Booby trap.” I keep telling myself that he is sticking with Angie because she’s an easy vote. Either way, he’s safe for now. However, when they hit mergeville, his closeness to Angie could cost him.
 2. Michael: How many lives do you have, Skupin? If we can continue to keep him alive I believe he will be in great shape. Skupin is probably sitting in the best seat right now. His tribe is winning challenges and he is helpful around camp.  2. Denise: Did Denise make the smart move by sticking with Malcolm last week? Totally. Stuff like that will cement their alliance. Would she be smart to keep an eye on things and maybe distance herself if/when she makes the merge? Again, totally.
 3. RC: I’m really proud of RC. I do believe she is aligned with a loose cannon, however, she did great on the Immunity Challenge while keeping her composure. If her tribe continues to win I think she can go far. Keeping Abi in her back pocket and having Skupin and Pete in her four-person alliance, I believe she will continue to do well.
  3. Penner:  Yeah, I had Penner super low in the rankings last week, but the hidden immunity idol changes everything. I just can’t see the Kalabaw Five pulling a fast one on someone who’s played the game twice. The question is; can he make some inroads with the people on the bottom of the Kalabaw alliance? The idol can only do so much.

  4. Pete: Last week I didn’t get to hear much from Pete, but now I believe that’s a good thing. This week Pete made comments that were quite funny! With his four-person alliance and his strong tribe I believe he will go far as well.
  4. RC: The dominant alliance, the dominant tribe, and an immunity idol clue…everything was coming up RC. That is, until Abi-Maria’s unnecessary freak out. Such is the danger of a day-one alliance. RC’s next course of action should be reassuring Abi-Maria that everything’s cool while maybe figuring out a way to replace her with Lisa or Artis.

  5. Denise: I’m really enjoying Denise. I like how level-headed she is in the game, making strong decisions. Her alliance with Malcolm is still my favorite pair of the season so far, but I need Malcolm to get his head back in the game.  Plus, she is really strong in the challenges.
  5. Pete: Pete, what’s going on with you and Lisa in the preview for this week’s episode? Voting for Mike? I think it’s a little too soon for the big moves train to be leaving the station.
 6. Penner: So happy Penner found the idol! He deserves my player of the week award! It really looks like Penner could be on the outs with his tribe so he needs to focus now! PENNER, put on that smile and start showing some love to your tribe! With an idol in hand you are now sitting pretty at Tribal going forward, but be careful because there is never value to an idol when it comes to the old fashioned blindside!  6. Abi-Maria: Whoa whoa whoa there, Abi-Maria. It’s the second episode. Your tribe has yet to lose an immunity challenge. There’s no reason to go all cuckoo crazy on your main alliance.
 7. Jeff Kent: He is strong in challenges and getting along well with his tribe right now. I think he is in a good position to do well.  7. Michael: I’m hoping Pete’s little chat with Lisa in this week’s preview is some kind of editing trick or them testing her loyalty. Why? Because the only acceptable ways for Skup to leave this game is as Sole Survivor or accidentally being beheaded with a throw pillow.
 8. Abi-Maria: She needs to step her game up. Her alliance is strong but she is second guessing every move. Untimely. I’m hoping she will make it far with her tribe, but she needs to be more confident and not start drama on a winning tribe. If she refuses to follow this advice then I’m happy to watch the madness unfold.  8. Jeff Kent: With his performance in the first two immunity challenges, I think it’s safe to upgrade Jeff Kent’s knee from day-to-day to minor boo-boo. He also seems to be the top dog at Kalabaw and even looks like he’s having some fun. I like it.
 9. Artis: Pulling for Arits. His tribe is on a roll although we haven’t heard much from him. He seems to be lying low.  9. Carter: It’s still too early in this tiny tribe season to get rid of somebody who’s as good at challenges as Carter. Also, it’d be a crime to be voted out of the game before ever having a chance to speak.
 10. Dawson: Not too much out of Dawson this week, but she still has Jeff’s secret which is huge leverage in the game. Good to see Dawson creating an alliance with Carter as well.
  10. Dana: Man, it’s tough to figure out what’s going on at Kalabaw other than the five newbs against Penner and his idol. That’s what makes ranking them so difficult. If Kalabaw loses and Penner plays his idol, who goes home?
  11. Carter: I have a feeling Carter will be funny and likable. Haven’t seen much of him, but it’s nice to see him having an alliance with Dawson.
  11. Artis: I guess I need to give Artis some credit. He looked wiped out on day two, but here he is still in the game. I’m still not positive he’s super safe in Tandang though.
 12. Lisa: Pulling for Lisa, seemed to have a tough time this week. She is feeling the true meaning of solitude when it comes to “Survivor,” and it is tough. Being out there alone is the worst! Hoping she can bounce back. It is possible!  12. Lisa: Alright, Lisa…this is my last pitch. If you’re only comfortable on stage or in front of an audience it’s time to do a little full-time improv. You’re playing the role of a likeable, confident woman who can be trusted. And…action!
  13. Dana: Still have hope for Dana. I’m happy they were second place in the challenge which will keep her safe for now. This would be another player we have yet to see any form of an alliance for, but I’m hoping things will turn around. And, during the challenges she really helps. Pulling weight is important during these first few days.
  13. Dawson: It kills me to have Dawson this low in the rankings, but if Kalabaw loses Penner’s going to play that idol. The question is; who does he take out? We don’t know much about the tribe’s dynamics, but I do know Dawson sat out of the immunity challenge.
 14. Katie: Kalabaw again. I haven’t heard much from this tribe, so I have no idea what to think of this girl. She seems sweet, but if Kalabaw loses a challenge I believe she would be first because it looks like a free for all.
  14. Katie: Once again, I feel like we don’t know enough about Kalabaw to know who goes if Penner’s safe. Katie’s this low because the tribe will want to stay strong, and I don’t think Katie’s as close to everyone else as Dawson is.
 15. Russell: Sorry Russ, but it really is what it is. Matsing needs to step it up in the challenges or they are going to get wiped out!  15. Angie: Is there a single guy in Utah who isn’t walking around with a sleeve of Oreos just in case he runs into Angie? Anywho, I’m debating between Team Cooki3s or The Cookie Three for her alliance with Malcolm and Denise.
 16. Angie: Gosh do I hate this part! Little Angie is so sweet and I love cookies too, but last week the crazy Christian sealed your fate. I don’t believe Malcolm can or will save you, only because it’s a game. I hope this is false but we will see! Happy to see you step up in the challenge and go twice!  16. Russell: I like Russell a lot. He’s a nice guy. But, he’s blowing it. He knew being a leader would get him in trouble. He went out and led. He apologized up and down for taking control, then freaked out after the second immunity loss. Now, if Matsing loses again, Russell and Denise are going to have to decide between Russell’s challenge strength and Angie’s loyalty. My gut tells me loyalty will win the day.

A Sneak Peek at the Next ‘Survivor: Philippines’ Immunity Challenge

XFinityTV is blowing up their coverage of “Survivor: Philippines.” Starting next Tuesday, I’ll be squaring off against a “Survivor: One World” favorite in this season’s Power Rankings challenge. The three key components to success in “Survivor” are having a strong social game, a strong strategic game, and prowess in immunity challenges. We’ve already discussed how our eighteen (now seventeen) players are going to tackle the social and strategic aspects. But, now I thought it’d be fun to ask “Survivor” Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer what he has in store for our beloved castaways. Not only did John spill the beans on the rest of the season, but he also gave us a look at how “Survivor” challenges are created…

Gordon Holmes: “Survivor” fans are going to be downright giddy now that water-based challenges are finally back.
John Kirhoffer: We haven’t had open water that we can do challenges in. We’ve had beautiful islands, but the water wasn’t safe. There was waves and coral. Here in the Philippines we have good shallow water areas. We have a beautiful lagoon that’s about seventy feet. We’re not going to go all the way down.
Holmes: They might not come back up.
Kirhoffer: (Laughs) Right. But we’ll send them down a bit. One of the first things I did was watch every water season of “Survivor” and took notes. I came up with a list of about sixty challenges that I love. I tried to figure out what the mechanisms are that made them fun. It’s not exactly Chinese arithmetic. Go out, collect puzzle pieces, then solve them. But it’s how you get those pieces, the journey back and forth has to be fun and physical. And the puzzles have to be interesting. But being back in a water location has opened out mind again.

Holmes: Very excited for the water challenges. Now, you probably know which questions is coming next…
Kirhoffer: You miss people eating gross stuff.
Holmes: I love the gross stuff.
Kirhoffer: Agh…so does my aunt. No, we don’t have any plans to eat gross stuff, and I’ll tell you why; we’re not “Fear Factor”…
Holmes: Whoa whoa…”Fear Factor” is gross stuff for gross stuff’s sake. “Survivor” always pulled actual food from the location.
Kirhoffer: Exactly. I’m sure we could find something, but in the Philippines the thing that is the most exotic and different is balut (fertilized duck embryo) and we did that in China and Micronesia. China had a lot of food that was indigenous. Although, we did cross the line, because we had people eat the smoothies.
Holmes: I’m going to hold out hope that you’re in town and see something on the menu that inspires you.
Kirhoffer: (Laughs) Maybe next season. People are mixed about it. My aunt says, “John Boy, how come we haven’t seen gross food in a while?!”

Holmes: Speaking of China, you guys did a great job working Chinese culture and symbolism into the challenges. Are we going to see some of that this season?
Kirhoffer: Oh yes. One of the cornerstones of coming to a new place is highlighting the culture. The way they fish with the nets, you’re going to see that in a challenge. The rice patties, we’re going to do some challenges in the rice patties that are beautiful. We’ve drawn a lot, not just from the set architecture, but also in the things we incorporate into the challenges.

Holmes: Between immunity and reward challenges, you’re probably on the hook for 20 to 30 challenges a season.
Kirhoffer: It’s around 25.
Holmes: I’d assume you take challenge ideas from everywhere. Where’s the oddest place you’ve taken inspiration from?
Kirhoffer: The title of a challenge has to be either a pun or the name of a rock band or song. We’ve got lots of them. But in China we started coming up with a title then making a challenge to fit it.
Holmes: That sounds like the exact opposite of what you should do.
Kirhoffer: It would inspire you! We had one called “Peking Duck.” We tested it, it was like dodgeball. You come up from behind a crate, and then you have to duck. So you’re peeking and ducking. We did that thing in Tocantins where the ball goes rolling down the roller coaster. That was based on an art project that one of our guys did.

Holmes: Speaking of peeking, that rhyme was unintentional, peeking at other people’s puzzles and strategies has been happening a lot lately. Is that something you guys even care about? Seems like it’d cause ill will between the contestants which I know is encouraged.
Kirhoffer: In the early days we used to set up barriers. Now? If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying. Are you smart enough to look at someone else’s strategy? When it gets down to individuals and you have stuff like mathematics, that kind of cheating can’t be tolerated. But you can only cheat so much with a puzzle.

Holmes: OK, let’s get into this sneak peek.
Kirhoffer: Let’s talk about episode two, a challenge called “Manila Folders.” The most important thing in a challenge is that you give it a cute name. And the cutest names, of course, are of rock-and-roll bands or rock-and-roll songs. Or, something that’s a pun on the area. Manila Folders. (Sarcastic Laugh) You see, Manila is a city…
Holmes: I see what you did there.
Kirhoffer: The way most challenges start is…back in September a handful of us came out here to scout the location and look for the areas and try to figure things out. Then we go back to Los Angeles. I get a few friends together and we sit together and say, “What’ve you got for puzzles?  What kind of new challenge ideas?” In the brainstorming process there’ll be five of us in the room. More of a brain breeze than a storm. Our friend Miles came up with this Tetris-like puzzle. It was Miles Tiles! But we changed it to Manila Folders. And, what we came up with is, we were looking for areas, we found this beautiful field that we can do challenges in. Miles pitches this challenge, then we all sit around and massage it together. We talk about what it could be. They’d race off into the jungle, then they’d bring back these folding pieces. You lay them down, and they all fit together.

Note: John was kind enough to share with us the sketches that were used during the planning of the challenge.

Holmes: And the sled?
Kirhoffer: We thought, we’d get one of these things that we’ve all seen out here. You’ve seen the big…buffalo, whatever they are, they pull these sleds that are for rice or grain or whatever. So we came up with our own sleds that our people would pull. We found the field, but we didn’t have a jungle. So instead of going out into a jungle we’re just going out into a field.

Holmes: OK, break this down for us.

Kirhoffer: There are three tables with all the puzzle pieces.

Kirhoffer: You race out there with your sled. You stack  ‘em up and then drag ‘em back. Then you have to go out further to the second stack.

Kirhoffer: It’s tough too, because once you load them up you have a couple hundred pounds of plywood. Then they have to go out to the farthest one.

 

 

 

Kirhoffer: With the puzzle there are three zones. The two pairs take turns completing a zone. The tribe to complete the puzzle first, wins.

From there, we watched the Dream Team (a group of young, fit production assistants whose job it is to run the challenges to make sure they’re interesting and relatively safe) put Manila Folders through its paces. Everything seemed to go as planned with the Kalabaw stand-ins taking the win.

Holmes: OK, what did we learn from the Dream Team’s test run?
Kirhoffer: We learned that having two pairs of people switching out and doing the puzzles was confusing. Jeff was up on the tower and saw it for the first time, he decided to have one pair do the puzzles. That way it’s easier for the people at home to understand and it puts more pressure on that pair.
Holmes: What about the tower? It seemed like they weren’t doing much coaching.
Kirhoffer: We learned a long time ago that having someone in a tower, that it’s good to have a bird’s-eye view on a puzzle like this. But sometimes that person just confuses the issue. Everyone feels the need to put in their two cents, when sometimes the smartest move is to have one voice do it.
Holmes: Alright, and that’s how a “Survivor” challenge goes from inspiration to immunity.
Kirhoffer: From inspiration to perspiration.
Holmes: Oh, that’s way better.

‘Survivor’ Castaway Zane Knight: ‘I Thought I Had it Locked’

There might not be a more obvious “Survivor”  case of “Woulda, coulda, shoulda” than Zane Knight. The 28-year-old tire treader was all over the map last night making alliances, planning back-stabbings, and wreaking havoc when all he really needed to do was be himself.

I talked to Zane the morning after his elimination and found out about the crazy weather, the secret alliances, and how close he came to getting Russell Swan out of the game…

Gordon Holmes: What happened? I thought I wasn’t going to get to talk to you until December after the finale.
Zane Knight: I was looking forward to talking to you in December! (Laughs) After they wrote my check. You know, you only get one way to play this game and I feel like I played it the best I could. I was a little premature, maybe if I’d put a little more forethought into Russ’s way with the court there. I said from day one,  “No celebrities,” so I went after the celebrity. I take pride in what I did.
Holmes: I feel like you crammed 39 days of “Survivor” into one episode.
Knight: (Laughs) I’ve been watching “Survivor” for a while now. I tried to take key components from the best players. Just genuinely awesome TV. You know, in life you’re not promised tomorrow, so why would you think you were promised tomorrow on “Survivor” island? I tried to break it in as hard as I could.

Holmes: You said, “Vote for me” to the Matsing Tribe. Was that your Brandon Hantz moment where you were testing everyone’s loyalty?
Knight: Exactly, you build this rapport with people, and I was going to make them work for me. It’s a character thing. Russ’s been in this game before. He knows how to play with people’s emotions. And like he said, “You don’t know how something you say is going to affect any other person.” So who was to know that he’d play ‘em like that. And I can’t put it all on him, I was too cocky. I thought I had it locked. The rest of the day I spent gathering fire wood until we went to get rid of Russ.

Holmes: Looking back, what would you have done differently?
Knight: The only thing is I would’ve been quiet.
Holmes: (Laughs) Well played.

Holmes: They didn’t touch on this too much, but the weather was insane during those first three days. Tons of rain, I remember your hands were all pruned-up and water-logged.
Knight: Aww man, just sheets of rain pelting you. You’re sitting there trying to build a shelter or pick up firewood, and like you said, your hands are so water-logged you can’t hold onto a piece of wood. The weather always comes with “Survivor.” You’re going to have heat, or cold, or rain. So, it’s expected. It adds to the game.
Holmes: You looked miserable when we were there.

Holmes: What’re the tribe dynamics right now at Matsing? Did you know Malcolm and Denise were partnering up?
Knight: No idea at all. Malcolm, you build a camaraderie with people and you think you’ve got them locked. At the end of the day, he was playing his own game. I never saw Malcolm sneaking in like he did. Like I said, I was too cocky. I gathered wood till it was time to send Russ home.
Holmes: You were convinced that Russell was going home?
Knight: I was convinced! It was locked. That’s my game. (Laughs) It was as a big a surprise to me as anybody.
Holmes: Are Roxanne and Angie a unit?
Knight: Not that I saw, but that’s the way the game works. At one moment you’re best friends, the next you hate their guts. You have to watch the season to see how they vote.
Holmes: OK, if you insist, I’ll watch the season.
Knight: (Laughs)
Holmes: But now that they’ve voted you out, why bother?
Knight: You know what, a lot of America felt the same way. And I don’t think that’s me having a big head.
Holmes: Well, I think a lot of people pre-judge you based on your appearance. But I certainly enjoyed you. I was genuinely disappointed to see you go.
Knight: Hopefully if I made my mark and Jeff appreciated me and y’all appreciated me, you might get to see me again.

Holmes: I liked seeing you and Angie getting along. It’s one of those things on the show where two people from different walks of life, once you strip them of their comforts, they can get to know each other and enjoy each other.
Knight: I can pretty much get along with anybody. Angie reminded me a lot of my sister. She seemed kind of…at home for me. She’s pretty easy to get along with.

Holmes: Alright, first word association of the year. Let’s start with Angie…
Knight: Free.
Holmes: Malcolm?
Knight: Funny.
Holmes: Denise?
Knight: Hard to get along with.
Holmes: Roxanne?
Knight: Casual.
Holmes: And Russell?
Knight: Hardcore.

Holmes: Alright, jumping back into that. You said Denise was hard to get along with, when it seemed like she was making strides to get to know you better. What am I missing?
Knight: She’s one of those people that you don’t ever know. In the back of your mind you’re always thinking, “Maybe.”  It’s not that you can’t trust her, you just can’t assess her.

Holmes: A lot of people leave “Survivor” changed people. Has your time out there affected your outlook on life?
Knight: Oh my goodness, I am proud to be an American. It changed my whole philosophy. It changes the way I sweep the floor at work, the way I shop for groceries, the way I cut my grass. There is no aspect of my life that wasn’t impacted. I don’t care if you come of 1st or 26th, if you can say anything bad about this game, you didn’t play it right.

Holmes: When you were out there, you mentioned that your wife is a fantastic cook. When you got home did she have something special waiting for you?
Knight: Oh my goodness, I come home and the first thing I had was meatloaf. Good old southern cooking. I had an awesome meal waiting for me. I couldn’t get it all in me there was so much there.
Holmes: What?! I love meatloaf and my girlfriend never cooks it.
Knight: You need to come on down here, bro.
Holmes: Deal.

Official ‘Survivor: Philippines’ Pre-Game Rankings

Well, “Survivor” host and talk-show superstar Jeff Probst had his say as to who he thought would run away with this season of “Survivor.” Now I get my turn…

Quick Note: These rankings were done before the filming of the first episode, although a few minor things that took place in the premiere were sprinkled in later. Enjoy.

Another Note: As always, betting on my official “Survivor” pre-game rankings probably isn’t illegal, but it is frowned upon.

Read Malcom’s Pre-Game Interview Read Denise’s Pre-Game Interview
1. Malcolm: Poor Malcolm is the recipient of my traditional pre-game curse. Why’d I curse Malcolm? He’s the player I’d create if I could make one in a lab. He’s good-looking, but not too good-looking. He’s fit, but not too fit. He knows how people view him. He’s a smartass, but knows when to be serious. Anywho, enjoy your early exit from the game, Malcolm. 2. Denise: I love that Denise is a sex therapist. There’s something about that occupation that seems perfect for “Survivor.” You have to deal with a wide variety of interesting folks, you can’t judge, you have to be able to keep your mouth shut. Add that to a genuinely nice person who can hold her own in challenges and you have a real contender.

3. Michael: Maybe this is wishful thinking from a “Survivor” fanboy, but I think Skup’s got a shot at taking this. I imagine he’s been watching every episode of this show for the past decade, breaking down every move and figuring out what he would’ve done in that situation. Also, if he’s going to fall into the dad role again, he has two fit kids (RC and Pete) and a confidant his age (Lisa). 4. RC: From our one-on-one chat, I found RC to be delightful. She’s quite the charmer. She also has a background as a competitive swimmer. Lucky for her, she was cast on the first season since ‘Fans vs. Favorites’ to have water challenges. I look for big things from her. She could end up with a big novelty “Survivor” check next to her hoop-rolling trophy.

5. Dawson: Here’s one pick where Jeff Probst and I disagree. He thinks Dawson’s an early boot because she’s going to annoy Penner. I think Kalabaw is headed for an early power struggle and she’s going to be sure to side with the winner. And besides, if she can survive nearly being given a concussion during a pre-game interview, 39 days on an island will be a piece of cake. 6. Carter: I like to think of Carter as the faux Fabio. With Fabio, what you saw was absolutely what you got. He was just a fun-loving kid who had a good time and kind of stumbled into a chance to win a million dollars. Anyone who sees Carter the same way might find themselves on the next 70-hour plane ride home.

7. Lisa: (Let’s see if I can write this blurb without a ‘Facts of Life’ pun.) Lisa’s tribe is such an a-team when it comes to challenges that Tandang may have a full house when they get to the merge. From there, if Lisa is bosom buddies with her alliance, she could win and join Tina Wesson and the rest of the sole surviving golden girls. However, one thing that could hurt her is if others are concerned that her kids were born with silver spoons in their mouths. (Success!) 8. Pete: You’re probably wondering why I have so many Tandangers so high in the rankings. It’s because they seem like a challenge juggernaut. You’ve got Michael, Peter, and Artis who are all jacked. And you’ve got RC who’s probably the best swimmer on this season. However, Pete has said he wants to make some big moves. Hopefully he’ll be smart enough to realize those moves aren’t always necessary. (See: Clarke, Sophie)

9. Dana: Dana’s a bit of a wild card for me. She seems like she’s got the laid-back thing down, which is perfect for flying under the radar. However, she also said she’s just there for a vacation. Sometimes that leads to big things (See: Crowley, Bob) but usually it leads to an early exit. Here’s hoping she’s up for the game. 10. Abi-Maria: I like Abi-Maria a lot. She’s a ton of fun. She also has the advantage of being in her thirties, but looking like she’s in her mid twenties.  Mix that with her accent and people could underestimate her quite a bit.

11. Zane: My buddy Zane’s first day on the island is going to be huge. Either people are going to accept him and enjoy him as the funny, personable guy he is, or they’re going to avoid him due to his appearance. Of course, it’s also possible he might start playing too aggressively. If he can keep his cool and find the right alliance he could make a serious run. 12. Russell: If ever there has been a tribe of misfit toys, it’s Matsing. Russell is going into this swearing up and down that he isn’t going to be a leader, but what if he has no choice? Denise is the second-best pick, but she’s probably smart enough to pass it off. Either way, as long as the dude stays hydrated, I’ll be happy.

13. Katie: If this was a ranking of people I’d like to go to Delaware Park Casino with, Katie would be an easy number one. However, for her “Survivor” game I have some concerns. First, she wasn’t quick on her feet when I presented her with some game scenarios. And second, she didn’t have a problem calling out Angie early in the game. And, early in the game is the best time to keep your mouth shut. Just ask Francesca Hogi from “Redemption Island.” 14. Roxy: Religion has been a huge part of “Survivor recently with Coach Wade and his Upolu tribe and Matt Elrod. This topic can be quite the lightning rod. Lisa seems to be on the right track of being mindful of what she says and who she says it to. Some people will receive it well, others won’t. Roxy doesn’t seem to have that same concern. She should be wary of how those things can be viewed in a post-“South Pacific” season.

15. Jeff: Why do I have a former professional athlete and probable challenge horse so low in the rankings? Because I truly believe that there will be an immediate power struggle in the Kalabaw tribe with Jeff Kent on one side and Jonathan Penner on the other. If Kent can win friends an influence people he could be on his way with a nice little alliance. If not…he’s out. 16. Penner: It kills me, KILLS ME to put Penner this low in the rankings. But like I said with Jeff Kent, I really think there is going to be a power struggle early at Kalabaw and one of them is going to be the first to go. Based on everyone’s appreciation that returning players have an advantage, Penner’s reputation as a strategist, and the fact that Penner doesn’t bring as much to the table physically as Kent means that he might be the first person in a red buff who is sent packing.

17. Angie:  Angie was easily the most talked about person before the game started. Although, with her looks and…uh…figure…she certainly does stand out. Malcolm, Katie, and others had already made assumptions about her intelligence before she even had a chance to speak. She’s a sweet girl, but she might not have enough life experience to overcome that disadvantage. Although, if she gets in with the right group, she could surprise us. 18. Artis: What can I say about Artis? He’s a nice guy. He’s an absolute inspiration for the way he defeated stage-four cancer. But, right now I see him as the first member of Tandang tribe to go home. I think his social game is really going to be his weak point. He doesn’t seem to be very good at reading other people, which is huge in a game like “Survivor.”

Reason for Evacuation: Russell fainted multiple times during a challenge in which he was blindfolded and made to push a giant ball around an obstacle course. Jeff Probst has described this as, “The scariest moment I’ve ever had on the show.”

Gordon Holmes: Last time I saw you on TV, you scared the…uh…you know what…out of me.
Russell Swan: (Laughs)
Holmes: Who the hell let you come back on this show?
Swan: (Laughs) Surprisingly, my wife! It’s funny, Gordon. It’s one of those things where I definitely got to experience just how much my wife loves me. I joke around all the time, and there are probably other husbands who say, “I’m worth more to you dead than I am alive.” But, my wife doesn’t want to hear that.
Holmes: And she doesn’t want to see it on national TV.
Swan: That is correct. So, really what this is about is a wonderful woman who supports her husband. She knows that this is extremely important to me. The what-ifs have got to stop and this is the only way they stop.
Holmes: Did you let her know who to take vengeance upon if you don’t come back?
Swan: Ah yes, I said there’s this guy named Jeff Probst. He’s recently married, so go to his wife first. And then do the wife thing and then she will probably join you in kicking his behind.

Holmes: It seemed like you hadn’t been getting enough rest or drinking enough water in Samoa. How do you make sure that doesn’t happen again?
Swan: Gosh, first point; “Survivor” is a marathon, not a sprint, Russell. So, when you come back after a challenge it’s alright to park yourself on your ample black behind and rest for a second before you start collecting firewood. Number two; the body needs water. A certain percentage of it is water. When it doesn’t have water it will fail on you. Third thing; as soon as you hit the beach you have to figure out who’s who and what’s what. This subtle thing that you’re trying to do does not work. Last, but not least; leadership kills. So, regardless of what Jeff says or the tribe says, you will not be the leader of the tribe. Period. End of story.
Holmes: My next questions was going to be about your leadership role in Samoa. You’re tossing that aside this time around?
Swan: I’m going to avoid that. In fact, here’s what happens…who should be the leader? Russell Swan?
Holmes: Didn’t he die?
Swan: (Laughs) He died, remember? Do you really want the guy who picked pillows and blankets over a tarp?
Holmes: All the women will turn on you immediately.
Swan: Do you really want that guy to lead? I’ll completely throw myself under the bus. Then I’ll find that guy. You know how there’s always that guy and he’ll be like, “Leader? That should be me!” And he has his hand on his hip and his chin will be jutted out. I’ll throw his butt under the bus.
Holmes: It’s good to see you’re learning from the past. Now you won’t be doomed to repeat it.

Holmes: Quick “Survivor” rewind question; what happens if you don’t leave the game in Samoa? Does Galu overcome Russell Hantz and the Foa Foa four?
Swan: You know, and this is speculative at best, but at the end of the day I at least convince them to keep from eating themselves before getting rid of some of those Foa Foa people. I think that other guy…with the hat, same name as me that I will not say. (Laughs)
Holmes: I don’t have a great memory, but I have a vague recollection of who you’re referring to…
Swan: I think we could dance around him and the rest of them you pick them off. I don’t think I would have let Erik (Cardona) be blindsided. Now, I didn’t know he had an idol. So, who knew, he probably would have played his idol.

Holmes: Since you’ve been on the show, there have been a bunch of changes with Redemption Island, One World, and other twists. Will you be able to adapt to whatever new, crazy thing they think up?
Swan: One of the things about “Survivor” is; if you can’t adapt, then go home. The game morphs even during the game. One twist in the beginning could be turned on its head. Redemption Island, immunity idol, two idols, five idols, the Medallion of Power? Medallion of Power…good lord, hopefully not.

Holmes: (Laughs) Now, when you go on “Survivor,” you really only prepare for three possibilities, I’m going to win, I’m going to lose to the jury, or I’m going to get voted out. Nobody prepares for a medical evacuation.
Swan: Oh no, definitely not.
Holmes: You mentioned the “What-Ifs” earlier. What did that do to you psychologically?
Swan: I hate to get all serious, Gordon, cause this has been light and fun.
Holmes: We’re on a beautiful beach in the middle of a tropical paradise!
Swan: (Laughs) But, I never thought that I would be 43 and have a situation that broke me. To have to deal with, almost like a death and all of the psychological trauma that comes with that. That day, dude, I was broken. And when I sat in that interview the next day, and but for my wife and my daughter, I wish I had died. I meant that. I could not deal with the pain of eight applications, ten years, and this is how it’s going to end? I can deal with getting voted out. I can deal with blah blah blah.
Holmes: You can deal with a million dollars.
Swan: I can deal with that! But they carried me out on my back. Worst day in my life. So, it’s been one of those things where this is an absolute blessing to be back here now. Whatever happens, it’s full circle now. I get to put some sort of closure on this thing. As an aside, I have to give a shout out to the “Survivor”fans. To a man, to a woman, the people who watch the show are phenomenal people. They reached out to me, they were positive. Any people who do what you do, they’re usually snarky.
Holmes: What?! That’s inappropriate.
Swan: (Laughs) They’re usually funny.
Holmes: This interview has gone off the rails.
Swan: But the fans were very supportive. They wouldn’t let me see myself as a failure. So I thank them.

Holmes: Why do you think you’re here? If there’s a twist, what is it?
Swan: That’s a good question. I’m not sure. The only theory that I have is, if I’m an injury and I’m here, then there’s probably other injuries here. It’s one of those things where it could be anything. My theory is it‘s “Fans vs. Favorites,” but it’s all the losers.
Holmes: “Fans vs. Losers” has a horrible ring to it.
Swan: (Laughs) All the people like me who were injured or something on one side, then a bunch of fans on the other.

Holmes: You seemed to play a pretty straight forward game in Samoa. Honestly, you were taken out before Galu really had to tear into each other. Are you comfortable lying or is that something you’re going to try to avoid?
Swan: The thing that’s clear to me, is that 2.0 Russell is going to be different. That subtlety thing ain’t going to work. I’m returning. And if there are newbies, they’re going to know that I’ve played this game. Well, some people aren’t really fans and they just kind of show up. But it’s going to get out that this dude has hit a beach before.
Holmes: We used to refer to you as “Good Russell,” should we throw that nickname out the window?
Swan: (Laughs) No, I’ve got to be who I am, dude. I like people, but if I’ve got to throw people under the bus, then hey. I want to win this thing. I don’t want to be like, “Oh, thank you, Jeff. Thank you, everybody for allowing me to come back.” I don’t want to sing ‘Kumbaya,’ I want to win this damn thing.
Holmes: I feel like if I were one of the newbies, I’d think, “Hey, Russell Swan is on my tribe. He seemed like a good, solid guy last time. Maybe someone I can trust.” Does it give you somewhat of an advantage that you got to play a relatively clean game before?
Swan: Oh, big time. I’m banking on it. You just confirmed it.
Holmes: So some people are in for a rude awakening?
Swan: That’s exactly what I’m shooting for, dude! (Laughs)

What’s New for ‘Survivor: Philippines’?

The first fifteen members of the cast of “Survivor: Philippines” were announced by CBS this morning. These 15 strangers (including 2000 National League MVP Jeff Kent and former “Facts of Life” star Lisa Whelchel) will be divided into teams of three and joined by three returning “Survivor” favorites.

XfinityTV.com sent me deep into the Philippines wilderness on a mission to meet these folks and bring you all kinds of “Survivor” stuff including behind-the-scenes tidbits, pre-game interviews with the cast, insights from “Survivor” host Jeff Probst and Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer, a look at the first Tribal Council, and much more. I’ll be cranking out this goodness daily, so be sure to follow me on Twitter (@gordonholmes) for up-to-the-minute updates on all of this season’s “Survivor” fun.

But, first and foremost let’s a look at how this season of “Survivor” will differ from previous incarnations…

 

A Trio of Tribes
For the first time since “Survivor: All Stars” the game will start with three separate tribes. What this means for the game is; the winner and second-runner-up for each immunity challenge will be safe, while the losing tribe will go to Tribal Council. This twist does limit each tribe to only six members, so it should make challenge prowess more valuable than it has been in the past.
  Three Returning Players…But Who?
Each of the three tribes will be joined by a classic “Survivor” player. The identity of these three players can’t be revealed at this time, but can be said that the three players were all removed from a previous season due to an injury. We will have exclusive interviews with all three of the returning players once their names are made public.
It Looks Like “Survivor”
The first thing that struck me upon arriving at the Caramoan Islands in the Philippines was, “This place looks like ‘Survivor.’” There’s water as far as the eye can see and seemingly hundreds of tiny tropical islands. Host Jeff Probst agreed with me, “’Survivor’ in the Philippines is back to the roots of the show. You’re going to have a lot of people fishing and finding clams. This is where we like to be, it’s just you can’t always find water in places where there isn’t political unrest.”
An Immunity Idol at Each Camp
Now that the days of two tribes living on the same beach are gone, so too is the “You have to give the idol to someone on the opposing tribe” twist. I’ll let future talk-show mogul Jeff Probst fill you in the on the rest, “There are three immunity idols, one in each camp. And, they’re hidden in plain sight. You just have to look in the right spot. And there will be a clue hidden in the bottom of the rice container. And if someone finds that clue and really pays attention to it, they’ll find the idol.”
Water Challenges Are Back
One of the major complaints about recent “Survivor” seasons is the lack of water-based challenges. The “Survivor” production team was aware of those concerns, however locations like Gabon, Tocantins, Samoa, and Nicaragua didn’t have the kind of beaches that lend themselves to safe water activities. I am pleased to announce that “Survivor: Philippines” will be full of swimming, diving, boating, and other water activities. In fact, the first immunity challenge features quite a bit of in-water fun.

From Mr. T, Muhammad Ali, and Liberace at the inaugural Wrestlemania to Sean “Diddy Puffy P-Diddy” Combs and Flo Rida at the most recent one, wrestlers and celebrities have been cross-mingling for quite some time.

So, as we prepare for tonight’s thousandth episode of “WWE Monday Night Raw,” I thought it might be fun to take a look back at the ten best celebrity appearances from the show’s first nine hundred, ninety nine episodes.

Note: Stacy Keibler doesn’t qualify for this list because at the time of her many appearances she was technically a WWE Diva and not a celebrity. Otherwise, she’d be featured in at least seven of the top ten entries…

The Piven Body Press
Things don’t always go smoothly when celebrities agree to be a part of the insanity of “Monday Night Raw.” The best results tend to happen when the celebrity is willing to check their ego at the door, dive in, and have fun. Jeremy Piven did just that during his August 3rd, 2009 guest hosting stint…literally.
Pee-Wee Is Rubber, Miz Is Glue
The exact opposite of the Piven visit took place during Pee-Wee Herman’s November 1st 2010 appearance. The then Mr. Money in the Bank Miz got to have some signature “Play House” fun as he kept accidentally saying Pee-Wee’s secret word and got into a classic “I know you are but what am I?” exchange.
The Big Red Machines
The bizarre Pete Rose/Kane feud was one of highlights of the Attitude-Era Wrestlemania events. On March 22, 2010, Kane reignited this rivalry quipping, “Your luck has changed? Don’t bet on it!”Note: This photo is from their Wrestlemania XIV encounter.
The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Vickie
From Vickie Guerrero and Miss Piggy’s “Excuse Me”/”Excuse Moi” debate to Sheamus rescuing his long-lost family member Beaker, the Halloween 2011 edition of “Monday Night Raw” was heaven for any kid of the ‘80s.
Mr. Britney Spears Defeats John Cena
Say whatever you want about Kevin Federline’s music career, but you’ve got to admire somebody who’s willing to make fun of their own public persona. The self-proclaimed “America’s Most Hated” milked the audience’s contempt like a classically trained bad guy and even managed to earn a pinfall victory over the former Doctor of Thuganomics on New Years Day 2007.
Shaq Vs. Show
It’s always a tricky thing when a celebrity tries to step into the ring. If it’s played for fun like Seth Green or Kevin Federline, I can appreciate it for the joke that it’s supposed to be. When it’s taken seriously like Jay Leno or Dennis Rodman, then I get nervous. However, when Shaquille O’Neal stood toe-to-toe with the Big Show during the July 27, 2009 episode of “Raw” I got excited. Every few years there are rumors that Shaq wants to wrestle. I’d be all for it.
Captain Kirk Takes on Double J
For anyone who thinks celebrity involvement on “Raw” is a relatively new phenomenon, let’s turn the clock back to January 16, 1995 when the former captain of the Starship Enterprise stood in the corner of Bret “Hitman” Hart. Fifteen years later, the two Canadians would reunite during Shatner’s guest hosting visit.
The Woo-Woo-Wolverine
It’s not every day that you get decked by an A-List movie star. (Well, unless you’re a member of the paparazzi.) But, Dolph Ziggler experienced just that when he found himself on the wrong end of a Hugh Jackman right cross on the September 19, 2011 episode of “Raw.”
Y2J, Come On Down!
“The Price Is Right” icon Bob Barker had the WWE Universe in the palm of his hand during his September 7, 2009 guest hosting stint. The highlight of the evening was clearly the way Barker put Chris Jericho in his place during a pricing game, even threatening to take the “Best in the World” over his knee at one point. (And kudos to Jericho for hilariously wearing the name tag on his chest.)
The Most Important Celebrity Appearance Ever
Steve Austin was the hottest act the WWE had seen in years and was the company’s best chance to overtake the WCW “Nitro” juggernaut. All he needed was that little something to put him over the top. That something was “Iron” Mike Tyson. On January 19, 1998 the two participated in a pull-apart brawl. The next day the event was talked about on every news outlet in the country. The “Stone Cold” era was born.Years later, Tyson would return to become buddies with Hornswoggle. That’s probably not as important as tilting the balance in the Monday Night Wars, but it’s something.

‘Survivor’ Power Rankings Semi Finals – Dawn Meehan vs. Christine Shields Markoski

In honor of “Survivor: One World’s” men vs. women theme, XFINITY TV’s “Survivor” guy Gordon Holmes captained a team of “Survivor: South Pacific” guys against a team of “Survivor: South Pacific” gals.

However, the Power Rankings imitated life and the women’s team ran away with the game. In fact, the men were mathematically eliminated with three weeks still left to go.

So, the executive “Survivor” Power Rankings committee decided that the Power Rankings should continue to imitate “Survivor,” and the women should be forced to compete against each other until one sole Survivor is left standing…er…ranking.

Note: The “Survivor” Hall of Fame coffee mug was disqualified for failing a drug test.

Set Your DVR to Record “Survivor: One World”

The Rules: Each week a pair of the remaining women will create separate Power Rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the two players will earn. For example, if Troyzan is voted out this week, Christine will receive 7 points and Dawn will receive 8 points. The person with the most points will advance to the next round.

1. Kat. Is. Not. Going. Anywhere.  Would you send her home? Kim needs to take her to the end and then explain that the ‘B’ in BLT does not stand for ‘bread’ (not even if it’s Dawn’s really good bread). 1. Kim is safe for these two reasons this week: 1) she has the idol. 2) she seems to be calling the shots with her Original Salani alliance. That being said, I keep wondering, “Is it possible for her to keep this #1 position the entire season? Can Kim WIN it?”
 
2. She is certainly the brains of the Spice Girls Alliance. (I bet she knows what CBS stands for and FBI and DNA and even ESL) and that makes you a target. That’s why she’s not in spot number one. 2. Chelsea may not have the idol, but she’s clearly Kim’s right-hand woman when it comes to the Original Salani alliance. Chelsea isn’t going anywhere this week. In addition, I think Chelsea has it in her to win individual immunity.
3. She’s safe for now. If her position changes I hope she’ll understand that it’s just a game and takes it like a woman. 3. Sabrina is one of my favorite players this season. She’s physically and mentally strong. She speaks her mind–and yet she’s very aware that she’s PLAYING a game for a million dollars. And I think the difference between 6th, 7th, 8th and Final 3 in this game (when a Day 1 alliance dominates the second half of the game): The Final 3 typically have a laser-like focus on their purpose for being on the island (to win the million dollars).
4. We saw the spicy side of Sabrina last week. Standing up to Troyzan and “not raising her voice.” Being part of the Spice Girls Alliance she’s safe for a bit but I don’t know if she’ll make it to the F3 being a major competitor to the acronym savvy Kim. 4. Part of the original Salani alliance, Kat’s safe this week. BUT, as the power players start thinking more and more about Final 3 and jury votes, I’m thinking Kat has to go. Anyone who gets giddy when they find BACON on their B.L.T. is a definite threat to win a jury over.
5. Should she stay or should she go, now? 5. If I think back to Day 1 in this season, I’m SHOCKED that Alicia is still in the game. And if I recall some of the more difficult days in the game, after the tribe swap and Colton’s reign on the Nu-Manono, I’m even more SHOCKED that Alicia’s still in the game. BUT not only is Alicia still in the game, I think she’s in one of the best positions to make F3 AND win favor with a jury.  (I mean, at this stage, she’s on good terms with the original Salani AND the remaining original Manono, Troy and Tarzan.) And after last week’s auction, we learned that Alicia has a really sensitive side—and believe me, that’s important for everyone to see/hear.
6. Her unrequited devotion to the Spice Girls is undying and painfully obvious. She’s safe until all of the testosterone is removed. 6. I’m still not sure about Tarzan this season. Do I love him or am I annoyed by him? Is he crazy like a fox or just plain crazy? On the one hand, he was crabby to my Hometown Favorite, Jonas; on the other hand, last week he endearingly washed paint off of Leif’s face. He’s worn Monica’s cute red shirt (and bikini, so I’ve heard). He’s performed well in some of the challenges. He’s coined one of the most hilarious phrases this season, “The game is afoot, Jeff.” And yet, he nearly opted out of the auction last week in order to pocket $500.00 to repair the shocks on his Jeep? What the what? SO, where do I stand? Honestly, this week, I’m stumped. BUT, I think Tarzan’s safe. I think the Original Salani has kept him around for a reason (hello foil).
7. I can understand this guy’s emotions last week and know how hard it is to keep them in check but the “don’t *&% with me” outburst might have hurt any chances of splitting up the Spice Girls despite what the coming attractions teased us with. 7. If anyone “deserves” the million dollars this season, it’s Christina. I honestly have NEVER seen someone respond to such disrespect with true tolerance and kindness. Remember her rubbing Colton’s head when he was sick? AFTER he’d ridiculed her, told her she was going home, and made really offensive comments about her? Christina’s reply was nothing short of incredible. Anywho, I don’t think Christina’s in positions 1-5 on the original Salani tribe, and I’m not sure she’s a threat to go on an individual immunity run, but I think she’s safe this week.
8. A “vote out” is afoot. 8. I know he has it in him to go on an Ozzy-like immunity run. BUT, based on his mental/emotional state last week (which, I think was completely understandable), I’m worried he won’t have the wherewithal to win individual immunity this week. And he needs it—because Troy is really the only thing standing between Sabrina, Chelsea, and Kim’s “Final 3” goal.

‘Survivor: One World’ Power Rankings – Sophie Clarke vs. Benjamin ‘Coach’ Wade

"Coach' Wade vs. Sophie Clarke (CBS)In honor of “Survivor: One World’s” men vs. women theme, it has been decided that XFINITY TV’s “Survivor” guy Gordon Holmes should lead a team of “Survivor: South Pacific” guys against a team of “Survivor: South Pacific” gals.

The Rules: Each week a representative from each team will create separate Power Rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the two players will earn. For example, if Troyzan is voted out this week, Sophie’s team will receive 9 points and Coach’s will receive 7 points. At the end of the season, the team with the most points will be named the “Survivor: One World” Power Rankings Challenge Champions.

Last Week: Gordon managed to prove that he’s smarter than a coffee mug. He had Jay in spot ten, while the mug had him in spot seven. Gordon must be so proud. The current score is now Team Salani 72, Team Manono 52.

Before we get into this week’s battle, let’s check in with Power Rankings fave Benjamin “Coach” Wade…

Gordon Holmes: Great to have you back, Coach. What’ve you been up to since we last saw you on “South Pacific”?
Benjamin “Coach” Wade: I’ve been up to Dragon Slayer Radio, conducting symphony concerts this week…i.e. Musica De Espana including a Latin Symphony I wrote. Working on finalizing things for hosting my own show, coaching college soccer, etcetera.

Holmes: Are you enjoying “One World”?
Wade: Yes. Good cast (not great, but good) and great twists and turns. It’s been a fun ride

Holmes The guys just got steamrolled this season. Was there anything they could have done to prevent it?
Wade: For every hayseed “Survivor” casts, 10 I.Q. points = 1 dumb move. Therefore, if someone has the I.Q. of 120 (below average) and they are a country bumpkin, then you take away 10 points=110. Because a smart player has a game I.Q. of say 145…145-110=35=at least 3 bad moves.

Hayseed #2: Michael
Hayseed #3: Troyzan

Q.E.D.

In answer to your question; stop casting hayseeds on the male side. There is nothing they can do now except charm, win immunity, and make a case for dumb moves = a lame duck in the final three.

1. Kimpossible, Kimsanity, Kim.goddess. Anyone with this many nicknames is a frontrunner. 1. Hands down the best female player since Parvati Shallow in my opinion. She has it all: strength in strategy, challenges, highly competitive, she also has a subtle style that she employs around people that she can get them to do whatever she wants and people trust her. Case in point: Jay and Troyzan and even Tarzan. She can handle herself at Tribals and state her points without those points coming back to bite her. People know she is strong but no one (except Troyzan) wants to take her out. She is unruffled when plans are going amok and can stay cool under any tough situation. She will take it this season, I feel.
2. Sabrina is tough. She seems to be at the top of her alliance and, unlike Kim who saw some votes at Tribal Council last week, she hasn’t drawn any attention to herself. 2. She is very smart strategically but I am not seeing a lot of the social game except from just within her circle. She has shown herself fair in challenges but she has common sense and good game judgment and Kim trusts her. She’s also shown leadership characteristics in old Salani. She seems good strategically and is strategically better than Chelsea.
3. Kim’s lackey was a bit too reluctant to vote out her boy Jay last week. She did eventually vote him out, but her wishy washyness makes me question if she has what it takes to actually win this game. 3. Chelsea is smart but lacks the killer instincts that are needed to win in the game. She reminds me of Amanda (Kimmel) who is someone who made the Finals in back-to-back seasons due to her social game and challenge strengths but struggled with the character decisions she would have to make in order to succeed in the game. Chelsea is wishy washy at times and leaked info to Jay that she shouldn’t have. Her alliance with Kim will take her to the Finals. She has a very solid social game and reminds me of both Natalie White and Amanda. She does seem to be developing the killer instinct more though, more so out of greed for the money.
4. Kat is safe this week. I don’t think anyone on the island sees her as a threat to win the game and she is a member of the seemingly unbreakable girls alliance. Then again, maybe once the girls find out that Kat is actually just Fabio with a haircut, they will cut her loose. 4. Kat comes across as rather unsure of a lot of things but has a lock in within the power alliance and knows she will need to tread water to stay in. She is on the outer rung of a power alliance. She has strength in challenges and can step up and play hard but she lacks in some of the social aspects and strategies.
 
5. Alicia is the odd girl out of the girl’s alliance and, unlike the other stragglers Kat and Chelsea, Alicia isn’t one to be content taking the backseat. If Alicia wants to make a move for more power, she needs to do it sooner rather than later. 5. Whereas she is very observant she can make waves and has done so at Tribals and in camp. This almost cost her before and even Jay recognized this. It can cost her again.
6. Whatever hatred your tribemates had for you has been replaced by a belief that you are in no way a threat. That’s good for keeping you around, but not so good for your bank account when the game is over. You might make it to the end, but there’s no way the jury is giving you this game. 6. She has intelligence but has not found a way into the power alliance and I feel will exit early due to not having found it. Socially she is quiet and gets along with people but she has played both sides before and that can be dangerous especially if you have two people fighting for control and one possesses the absolute control (Kim).
7. The girls are picking off the challenge threats, and Tarzan is not one of them. Plus, they need to keep around the eye candy, right? 7. He made and allowed too many poor decisions early and will have to stay in because of an immunity. He is strong challenge wise but like Ozzy his arrogance will cost him. If he could get his act together he could easily be what he is, which is Kim’s counterpart on the island. Instead, like Ozzy, he is allowing some arrogance to seep through because he realizes that Kim has him cornered. If he would just calm down and use his natural honed abilities he could flip this game still on its head but instead he is letting Kim get under his skin.
8. Leif performed well in the challenge last week and if Troyzan wins immunity this week, he is next on the chopping block. 8. Though a funny character to watch, his tendency to rub people the wrong way and lack of social etiquette makes him a perfect “goat” for the Finals. I think he lacks a solid game but will be taken deeper as an extra vote and as a backup goat if needed for Kim. Thing is I doubt she will use him and take Chelsea to the Finals and if a F3 Sabrina also.
9. Troyzan is likeable, a great challenge competitor, and idol-less. He was lucky to survive last week but I doubt he will be so lucky again. 9.  Leif  is too trusting, too nice, and voted against Kim last Tribal even though I am sure he knew Jay was going. Leif is not playing the game and seems to just be out there for the adventure perhaps. Earlier on he spilled info to Bill while on the Manono side and I think he doesn’t realize that to stay in the game you have to make numbers with people and play as you go. I don’t think he understands the game fully.

Set Your DVR to Record “Survivor: One World”

We kick this deal off with a beautiful sunrise at Tikiano beach. Jay starts the day off by telling everyone that he had a dream that he was shot. Foreshadow much?

Later on, Tarzan tells Troyzan that the women are looking to eliminate the men. That’s gotta be bad news when Tarzan is the voice of reason.

Troyzan says they could turn the numbers around if they just had the hidden immunity idol. I’ve got to say, I like Troyzan using the rarely-seen strategy of keeping his idol possession a secret.

Tree mail arrives in the form of a chalkboard, a pole, and other goodies. They lug all the gear back to camp and we learn that it’s time for another do-it-yourself reward challenge.

Reward Challenge: The players will divide themselves into two teams of five. They’ll then take turns throwing bolos at numbered stakes on a pole. The team with the most points wins a boat ride to a secluded island. While there, they’ll enjoy a barbecue. No word on if delicious 7Up will be served.

The players pull rocks to decide which team they’re on. Troyzan, Kat, Alicia, Jay, and Tarzan are one team, while Christina, Sabrina, Chelsea, Leif, and Kim are on the other.

Troyzan decides that he’ll be Faux Probst and calls the action. Hmm…if I were Troyzan I wouldn’t quit my day job. Oh wait, his day job is taking photographs for swimsuit magazines. I wouldn’t quit that day job for anything.

Round 1: Jay and Kim both fail to score.

Round 2: Kat scores two while Leif comes up empty.

Round 3: Troyzan and Chelsea both miss.

Round 4: Tarzan hits a four while Christina hits a one.

Round 5: Alicia and Sabrina both come up short.

The final score is six to one. Troyzan, Kat, Alicia, Jay, and Tarzan win reward.

The barbecue consists of rum, coconut, and all of the seafood in the world. Once they’re done eating, Jay and Kat discuss a little bit of strategy. Jay is still very concerned that the women are going to start axing the guys one by one. Yeah, you keep saying that, but you voted off Michael.

Back at camp; Kim, Kat, Chelsea, and Alicia are going over the pecking order. Apparently Jay or Troyzan is next on the chopping block depending on who wins immunity. Chelsea doesn’t love this plan as she’s given her word to both of those guys. Yeah, she’d better be careful, nobody’s ever lied on “Survivor” before.

Alicia thinks Chelsea should suck it up and get with the plan. Sabrina agrees with her. Uh oh…

Jay wants Alicia to go home next as a way for the women to prove that they aren’t ganging up on them. He takes this plan to Kat. When he asks for confirmation, she says “What am I going to say, no?” Hmm…but she didn’t say, “Yes.” I’m starting to like me some Kat.

The rest of the women agree to Jay’s plan, but Kim later tells Alicia that they’re going to pretend to vote for her.

Is there still a guy named Leif on this show?

Immunity Challenge Time: Players will stand on a perch with an arm in the air. Tied to their wrist is a rope that is connected to a vat of colored water. If they move too much, their vat will drop their water on them and they’ll be eliminated. Last person standing wins immunity.

The challenge starts off and Tarzan immediately pulls a Crystal Cox and falls. He’s followed by Christina.

Probst brings out some cookies to tempt the players. Sabrina drops out.

Next up, J-Pro brings out some cupcakes. Kim and Kat call it quits.

Alicia offers to drop down to help Chelsea win. Chelsea thinks she just wants something to eat.

Jeff brings out another plate. Alicia says she doesn’t care what it is, she wants it. To prove her point, she steps down.

(Please be sea water. Please be sea water.)

Unfortunately, it’s a bowl full of candy.

Before the next food item can be brought out, Troyzan loses his balance and is eliminated.

Some chicken wings and beer are up for grabs next. Jay decides to take Probst up on the offer.

Chelsea tries to convince Leif that winning immunity will make him seem like a threat. He doesn’t buy it.

However, he does buy the burgers that Probst brings out. Chelsea wins immunity.

Quick Aside: Leif double checked with Chelsea to make sure that dropping out would make him seem like less of a threat. So much bad strategy this season.

Back at camp, Kim makes the call that they should split their votes between Troyzan and Jay. The concern is that Troyzan might have an idol.

Kim does her best to make Troyzan feel safe, but the lady doth protest too much, and he doesn’t buy it.

Blam! How many “Survivor” recaps quote Shakespeare? Classes up the joint a bit.

Troyzan does some solid last-minute scrambling, trying to get Christina, Tarzan, and Jay on his side.

Jay tells Kim that they should vote for Alicia to flush out Troyzan’s idol. You know, they could vote for Jay and flush out the idol too…just saying.

That night at Tribal Council, Troyzan admits that he thinks there’s still a men vs. women dynamic.

Tarzan thinks the women are a lot smarter than the guys. Gordon thinks that’s an understatement.

Kim, Jay, and Troyzan think they’re in danger.

Troyzan thinks it’s shady that everyone applauded when he was eliminated from the immunity challenge.

Alicia thinks the men might have an immunity idol because they’re wearing shorts with pockets. Interesting observation.

Voting Time: Jay votes for Alicia, Troyzan votes for Kim, Kat votes for Troyzan (but she calls him “Monkey Man”), and the rest of the votes aren’t shown.

Probsty tallies the votes, then asks if anyone would like to play an immunity idol. Troyzan takes him up on this offer. In doing so, he says he’s not going to go down as a dumb player who left the game with an idol in their pocket. In your face, James Clement.

Two votes for Troyzan, one vote for Kim, one vote for Jay, one vote for Alicia, one vote for Jay, one vote for Alicia, one vote for Jay, and the ninth person to leave “Survivor: One World” is…Jay.

Verdict: The show picked up a bit this week with some interesting strategy. However, I wish it seemed like people other than Kim, Troyzan, and Sabrina were playing this game.

Who’s Going to Win: I still think we’re going to see a Kim/Sabrina/Chelsea final three. I also think we might have a jury that appreciates gameplay. If that’s the case, Kim could take it.

Power Rankings Update: Blam! In your face, inanimate object! The coffee mug I pulled names from had Jay in spot seven while I had him in spot ten. Thus providing my team with its first win this season. The current score is now Team Salani 72, Team Manono 52.
