“YOLO” is to youth culture what saying “it’s part of the game” is to “Survivor.”  They’re both perfectly acceptable ways of going about your business, but they don’t exempt you from dealing with the consequences of your actions.

If you break your arm while skateboarding, YOLO is as good a reason as any for attempting the move. But, it doesn’t mend your bones any faster.

If you vote out an ally on “Survivor,” saying “it’s part of the game” is a totally understandable reason. But, that doesn’t mean the ally has to reward you for it.

Brenda Lowe was dealt a pretty harsh lesson in “Survivor” last night when she was sent packing by the person she thought was her closest ally. And just because it’s part of the game, didn’t make it any easier to watch. I spoke with her the next morning and had a chance to ask about her relationship with Dawn, the new Brenda vs. the old Brenda, and whether players should start throwing the family challenge…

Gordon Holmes: Last night was rough!
Brenda Lowe: (Laughs) Oh, I know. It sucks.
Holmes: It sounds like you’re in good spirits, though.
Lowe: Yeah, I have to be. I’m happy about it. Well, I’m obviously not happy about the horribleness, but the experience overall.
Holmes: On a scale from one to ten, how much did you trust Dawn going into last night’s Tribal?
Lowe: Going into the Tribal it was a ten.
Holmes: Wow…especially after the retainer incident. People get upset and they cry, but that seemed to be on another level. It was such an intense moment between you two.
Lowe: You have those situations and you are in a moment where you have to take care of someone. It really reminded me of back home. I have a little brother who’s 11 years younger than me. And when we were younger he got hurt and he busted his lip open. Blood was pouring out and my mom was hysterical. I had to take care of him, and calm down my Mom, and make sure everything was OK. That’s exactly what I felt during the whole Dawn thing.  “You’re going to be OK. I’m going to save you. Don’t worry about it, relax.” That feeling of, “Man, I’ve done this before” made me associate her with family. I would never vote off Dawn. I would never do that. As crazy and unstable as she was, it was something you understood because that’s her character. But, I felt so attached. And I thought that was the biggest sign I could receive. This woman chose me to help her, I was able to help her. The two of us could be unbeatable! It sounds so corny now, but I was never going to vote against her.
Holmes: Is this going to stick with you? Will you be able to talk to her at the finale?
Lowe: Umm…I’m not sure. Of course you should always forgive. But, deep down inside with the friendships I have, the quality of friendships I have, probably not. That’s just me being honest. Will I be nasty? No, because my parents didn’t raise me like that. So as far as being warm and inviting? Probably not. If it wasn’t for the finale I probably wouldn’t talk to Dawn ever again.
Holmes: We obviously haven’t heard from Dawn yet about last night’s vote. But, I’d assume one of her counterpoints would be how you targeted Cochran. That’s been a theme lately. You tell Dawn you want to get rid of Cochran, you’re gone. You tell Cochran you want to get rid of Dawn, you’re gone. It seems like they’re doing a fantastic job of hiding how close they really are.
Lowe: That was a big mistake of mine. I knew they were close, but I thought they were close to keep each other calm. I didn’t know they were unbreakable. I thought for sure that Dawn would at least be honest with me. If it was me, Dawn, and Cochran at the end, I’d be fine with that as long as I was there. To their credit, I didn’t see how they genuinely wouldn’t turn on each other. Had I known that, I definitely wouldn’t have called out Cochran’s name. As far as strategy, he was the last strategic person there, so he had to go…the same way he thought that I had to go.

Holmes: Of the final six, who would’ve been your dream final three?
Lowe: At that moment it was me, Dawn, and Erik. I  don’t think that Sherri deserved it. And Eddie is likable, but he found his way where he is now. And Cochran was the biggest threat, so why would I want him there?

Holmes: Before the game you and I talked about how when we met in Nicaragua you were the nice, fun Brenda we all know and love. But in the game you were stone cold.
Lowe: (Laughs)
Holmes: (Laughs) And this season you were nice and fun in the game. Was it your dad’s direction that put you on that path?
Lowe: Definitely. It was my dad’s direction, it was also getting an opportunity to play before and watch myself. That was a big deal for me. A lot of the time I’d be watching the show and I was on top and doing great, but some of the things I’d say would make me cringe. These are still people. The biggest lesson was that way did not work. You’ve got to do something different. And then out of nowhere having the strangest advice from my family. Before they were like, “Don’t come back without the million dollars!” Now they were like, “Just be humble, be kind.” I thought it was very strange, but it really did help me. It felt great. That attitude had a lot to do with how I was able to connect to people.

Holmes: In the Philippines, Malcolm wins the family reward and it comes back to bite him in the rear. Last night you win the family challenge and it bites you in the rear. Going forward, should players just throw the family challenge?
Lowe: No! I think it’s horrible. You can’t. How could you do that? You have to try your hardest. You’re pumped up with your loved one, doing a challenge together. You always want to do your best. To play it any other way is not good advice.
Holmes: Well…
Lowe: And it’s boring! Can you imagine if everybody threw the challenge? It wouldn’t be fun.
Holmes: Hey, I love my girlfriend, but I could see her two weeks later and possibly have a million-dollar check.
Lowe: (Laughs) That’s true.

Holmes: Alright, word association time…
Lowe: I’m going to do animals because I recently went to the zoo and I thought, “this is perfect.”
Holmes: You and Malcolm. Alright, let’s start with Cochran.
Lowe: When I think of Cochran I think of a red panda.
Holmes: Eddie?
Lowe: Eddie is a fox. A likable fox.
Holmes: Erik?
Lowe: Erik is a Cocker Spaniel. He’s very happy and independent.
Holmes: Phillip?
Lowe: A bear, a huggable one.
Holmes: Sherri?
Lowe: I think Sherri is an emu.
Holmes: Reynold?
Lowe: A lion.
Holmes: Malcolm?
Lowe: A horse, running free with his hair in the wind. (Laughs)
Holmes: His beautiful, flowing mane.
Lowe: (Laughs)
Holmes: Andrea?
Lowe: Andrea is golden panther with striking blue eyes.
Holmes: She’s going to be heartbroken that she’s not a unicorn.
Lowe: (Laughs) Oh! I didn’t see that at the zoo.
Holmes: Let’s finish with Dawn.
Lowe: Dawn…she’s like a beetle.

Holmes: What’s been the reaction from the fans after last night’s vote?
Lowe: I’m getting the best support. They’re so nice. You do get down and you think, “Did I do the right thing?” And people reach out and say you did the right thing. It goes to show how many people have a good set of values in them. So many people were so angered by that because they’re good people. They wouldn’t have done that.

‘Survivor: Caramoan’ Fave Brenda Lowe: ‘There is Good Brenda and Bad Brenda’

January 21, 2013

Brenda Lowe (CBS)

I had a chance to sit down with all twenty of the “Fans vs. Favorites” competitors the day before they left for the Caramoan Islands. I’ll be posting exclusive interviews with each contestant every weekday until we get through all of them. Be sure to follow me on Twitter (@gordonholmes) for tons of updates.

Name: Brenda Lowe
Age: 30
Hometown: Miami, FL
Occupation: Paddleboard Company Owner
Previous Finish: Brenda came in 10th place in “Survivor: Nicaragua”
Memorable Moment: Brenda was the very first person to wield the awesome responsibility of the Medallion of Power.

Note: The “Survivor: Caramoan” pre-game interviews are unlike the pre-game interviews we’ve done in the past. Usually, the interviews take place on location, this time they took place in Los Angeles before the players flew out. At this point, all the “Favorties” know is that they’re flying out in the next few days. They have seen each other, but haven’t seen the new players.  They don’t know for sure where they’re going, and they don’t know any of the season’s twists.

Gordon Holmes: I remember leaving Nicaragua and being like, “Brenda’s my girl.”
Brenda Lowe: How many girls are you saying that to?
Holmes: Probably a bunch.
Lowe: (Laughs)
Holmes: No, you were a ton of fun in our interview, very smart. And then I get home and the season starts and you’re like this bad ass, cool cucumber.
Lowe: Wait, are you telling everyone else that you like me?
Holmes: No, I can’t talk about you with anyone else. They’re welcome to say whatever they want, but I have to stay quiet.
Lowe: OK, good.
Holmes: So, was the stone cold serious thing part of your plan going in?
Lowe: I think in context you’re not going to be all happy-go-lucky or people are going to vote you out first. But, there were fun parts you probably didn’t see because it didn’t go with the story.
Holmes: What were the fun parts?
Lowe: You know, joking around with Kelly Purple. Or, tripping out Sash. We did have our moments.
Holmes: I remember La Flor did a dance on the way to that first immunity challenge.
Lowe: Oh yeah, that was my idea.
Holmes: Did you choreograph that?
Lowe: Hell yeah.
Holmes: And yet, here you are getting no kind choreography credit.
Lowe: Nope, and people couldn’t even do it right! But I thought it was cool, Jeff was rolling his eyes.
Holmes: I don’t know if “cool” is the adjective I’d be using to describe that dance.
Lowe: We’re the young tribe! We’re cool.
Holmes: When your friends and family saw how stone cold you were, what was their reaction?
Lowe: They know I can be like that.
Holmes: Oh, so there is that side to you?
Lowe: Yeah.
Holmes: So, I should try not to piss you off.
Lowe: (Laughs) Yeah, there is good Brenda and bad Brenda.
Holmes: That’s why I said all of that nice stuff about you earlier. I don’t want to come face-to-face with bad Brenda.
Lowe: (Laughs) That’s smart.

Holmes: I’ve been doing this a while, and every time in the bios they ask the contestants, “Which Survivor are you most like?” Nine out of ten times the women say they’re like Parvati Shallow. However, the name Brenda Lowe has been showing up more and more often.
Lowe: I didn’t know that, that’s pretty cool.
Holmes: What do you think it was about your game that inspired so many future players?
Lowe: I think they say that because I did my own strategy. I was my own little leader out there. I knew what I wanted and I tried to get it myself. Everything I was thinking of happened, until I got voted off.

Holmes: What have you been up to since Nicaragua?
Lowe: Since you saw me last, I’ve still been paddleboarding. When you saw me I was single, now I’m super not single.
Holmes: Super not single.
Lowe: Yes, super in love.
Holmes: Engaged…?
Lowe: No.
Holmes: Soon to be engaged…?
Lowe: Yes! Soon to be. Still living in Miami, and I’m living a good life.
Holmes: OK, so this is a change for you. In the first episode of your season, you said you were single like a dozen times.
Lowe: (Laughs) Yeah.
Holmes: Does that cut off the avenue of being able to flirt to get ahead?
Lowe: Well, I never really flirted before…well, not too much.
Holmes: But does it take away a potential weapon in your arsenal?
Lowe: I think flirting is more building a rapport. If I’m talking to a guy and he likes it, does that count as flirting or building a rapport? But, I have a boyfriend who I’m not going to disrespect.

Holmes: Why do you think you were brought back?
Lowe: I think I was brought back because I did stuff on the show. I tried to make it interesting and I tried to make big moves. I tried to get far, I was fighting hard. I did get through that first Shannon fiasco. I don’t think you see a young girl being at the top of her alliance.
Holmes: What was your reaction when you got the call to come back?
Lowe: Oh, first I was like holy (expletive deleted). (Laughs) Because it sucks to be out there. You’re not eating and you’re miserable. But, I didn’t want to get my hopes up in case it didn’t happen. But, I was super excited at the chance to go out there.
Holmes: Because you’re going to tear that business up.
Lowe: Hell yeah. I made some mistakes, I learned from my mistakes, and now that I have a second chance it’s going to go much better for me.

Holmes: What’s the reaction you get from fans on the street?
Lowe: They’re super excited. They always want to know what it’s really like.
Holmes: It’s amazing after all these years, some people still think you guys stay in hotels.
Lowe: Yeah, it’s real.

Holmes: OK, it’s day one and I see that I’m playing this game against Brenda Lowe. What do you think I remember about you?
Lowe: I think people are going to watch out for me, which sucks. I’m going to be as nice as I can to everybody. I don’t think anyone’s going to be like, “Aww…she’s so sweet, let’s align with her.” I’m going to fight my hardest to change that preconception.
Holmes: I’m using Coach as my example of someone who used the TV aspect of the show to his advantage. He was able to convince people that the goofy Coach you saw on TV was just a character.
Lowe: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah…I’m going to totally play up that. “You didn’t see the real me, it was editing.” But, the truth is, I was good with my alliance and I had one alliance. But this time, I’ll have several.
Holmes: Probst gave you some grief for not scrambling when it looked like your time was up. I thought it was unique that you said that scrambling might cause your alliance members to not trust you.
Lowe: Yeah.
Holmes: On one hand, it didn’t work out for you, but on the other, it seems like there’s some merit to that strategy. What did you learn from that?
Lowe: One thing, it’s hard to scramble when you only have one alliance and that one alliance is telling you they’re going to vote you out. At the same time, my key partner Sash had the immunity idol. People wanted me out because they thought I was shady and couldn’t be trusted. So, if people saw me talking to Jane or whoever, then they’re like, “She’s definitely not with us, we need to get rid of her.” So, that was my angle and it didn’t work.

Holmes: Are you worried that there might not be a Medallion of Power this time around?
Lowe: (Laughs) Me and the Medallion of Power got along pretty well.
Holmes: I try not to hang onto regrets in my life. But, my biggest regret is not bidding on the Medallion of Power when they put it up on eBay after the season.
Lowe: (Laughs) You’re such a liar.
Holmes: I would’ve worn it here like a Flava Flav clock.
Lowe: Use it like a Christmas ornament.

Holmes: If there’s a twist, what do you think it will be?
Lowe: I think it’s half returning people, half new people. Then they’re going to mix things up.

Holmes: What do you think of this cast?
Lowe: I want to get to know them, one on one. I want to talk to them and see what they’re like out there. Do I like you? Can I stand you? Can I trust you? I’m going to pretend to like everybody.
Holmes: Did you recognize everybody?
Lowe: Yeah, I know everybody here except for one guy I don’t know.
Holmes: Is there anyone you immediately think you want to align with or watch out for?
Lowe: I definitely want to align with Cochran for sure and Corinne. I’m going to align with everybody, but those two are who I’m going to go with.
Holmes: That’s a sweet deal when you can align with everybody.
Lowe: (Laughs)
Holmes: Who do you think will improve this time around?
Lowe: Well, I think Francesca will improve because she was the first boot last time.
Holmes: She doesn’t have much of a choice.
Lowe: That’s not going to happen again.

‘Survivor’ Castaway Interview – Brenda Lowe

November 18, 2010

There’s been a lot of talk this season about the strategy of taking social train wreck NaOnka to the finals. The upside? You’re guaranteed to win if you’re facing her in front of a jury. The downside? You can’t trust her.

Brenda Lowe made that gamble…and lost.

I spoke with Brenda the morning after her elimination from ‘Survivor: Nicaragua.’ Hot topics of conversation included Sash’s immunity idol, Holly becoming a player, and the many moods of NaOnka…

Gordon Holmes: B-Lowe!
Brenda Lowe:
Gordon!
Gordon: I’ve gotta ask you, how can you trust NaOnka when she’s wreaking all sorts of havoc along the Nicaraguan coastline?
Brenda: Believe it or not, there is a nice side of her. We see the crazed roller coaster ride of her, but I trusted her 100%, more than anybody else out there.
Gordon: What about when she was knocking over Kelly B. and stealing things?
Brenda: The only day that I was like, “What the hell am I doing with this girl?” was the day she stole the food and the pots and all that stuff. That’s the time I thought, “This girl could really mess up my game.” But other that, I really did trust her.

Gordon: Last night there was a brief discussion about Sash giving you his idol. Was that ever seriously considered?
Brenda:
There was a little discussion about it. But this was the thing…my strategy to stay in the game was to show the people who could actually save me that they could trust me. One of the main reasons why I didn’t scramble, talk to Holly and Danny and all these people, was to say, “You guys can trust me. I’m loyal. I’m with you to the final five…Sash, Chase, NaOnka, and Kelly. I’m not going to take your idol and be like ‘Ha Ha! Vote you out!’” There was no discussion with the idol and Sash, because I knew he wouldn’t give it to me.
Gordon: Did you know Sash and Chase were going to vote against you?
Brenda: I had wishful thinking that in the end Sash would give me the idol and that my vote for NaOnka or Benry would work and I’d still be in the game. But I’m not surprised that they did that. And fine, when you have to go with the majority to stay in the game, you have to go with the majority. It’s kind of like the whole Marty vote. It didn’t feel right, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do for yourself.
Gordon: Was Purple Kelly’s vote for Benry in case you had gotten Sash’s idol and NaOnka had played her idol?
Brenda: No, the plan was to take out Benry. And I was going to vote for Benry too because he was the bigger target. But as I was holding the marker in my hand, I was like, “Why am I writing down Benry? My enemy is NaOnka!” And that’s when it changed. As you can see it didn’t matter. It was a futile attempt that didn’t work.

Gordon: I noticed you drew an impressive immunity idol on your vote. Was that freehand?
Brenda:
Thank you. It was freehand, there was no stencil. It was from what I remember from getting the idol for this girl. Some people didn’t know that she had an immunity idol, and I totally could have been like, “Everybody! She has the idol! Arghhhh!” But I wanted to show her, “Look, I’m not even outing you. I’m still staying loyal to you, you crazy girl.” The immunity idol drawing was my hidden way to get back at NaOnka without losing it at Tribal Council.

Gordon: When I interviewed you before the game, I remember thinking, “Brenda’s adorable. She’s fun and full of life. This game might be too cutthroat for her.” And then you got out there and were a total badass.
Brenda:
(Laughs)
Gordon: Last week everyone was like, “Oh, stay on Brenda’s good side or she’ll rough you up.” Was that part of your plan to downplay your personality.
Brenda: No, it was not intentional at all. One of things I thought was, “Wow, people really thought of me like that?” Because I was happy and the way that I am now. But there was a side of me that was really focused. When you’re focused you’re just thinking about the way to the end and all the other stuff goes away. I think that’s what people saw. “I don’t want to talk about paranoia, I know my way to the end. Stop, get out of here with your nervousness. Let’s get it done.” I wanted to win that thing and go home. That was my attitude. It bugs me that it comes across as really cocky. I never did that on purpose and I’d never want anyone to look at me that way.

Gordon: XFINITY TV is hosting the “Survivor” Hall of Fame. Who would be your picks for the five best players of all time?
Brenda:
Best five Survivors…Boston Rob…Parvati…JT on his first try…Tom Westman…and…can I say Boston Rob again?
Gordon: It won’t count, but you’re welcome to.
Brenda: (Laughs) Let me think…even though Sandra won twice I’m not liking the whole under-the-radar thing. I like Russell, but he didn’t win. How about Todd? Todd from China.

Gordon: How close were you to Chase? It seemed like you were annoyed with him, but he was wrapped around your finger.
Brenda:
Chase is a sweetheart. He’s a gentle giant. I’ve never met a guy who uses his heart over his head. It was weird for me. I think that was a lot of my frustration with him. I was like, “Why are you not thinking? Why are you using your heart? This is ‘Survivor!’” Be he trusted me and stood by me. He didn’t have that killer instinct. I saw that in this episode that he didn’t want to take me out when everyone else did. He’s a very sweet, genuine, innocent person.

Gordon: Last night you said that you were the king and Sash was the queen. Was that comment for Shannon’s benefit?
Brenda:
No. Sash and I are the king and queen of the camp, but I feel more like I’m the king. What I meant by that is that I was more in charge. After I said it it sounded really funny considering the whole Shannon calling Sash gay thing. But that’s not what I meant.

Gordon: Did you know Holly was coming up with strategies?
Brenda:
I really underestimated Holly. I didn’t know it was her. I watched the show and was like, “Wow! Holly! Ouch!” I thought it was NaOnka the whole time.

Gordon: Let’s do some word association. We’ll start with Chase.
Brenda:
Gentle giant.
Gordon: Sash?
Brenda: BFF…and what I mean by that is “Best frenemy.” He’s like my partner, but at the same time my frenemy.
Gordon: Marty?
Brenda: Smarty.
Gordon: Fabio?
Brenda: Like a little brother.
Gordon: NaOnka?
Brenda: Roller coaster ride.
Gordon: Holly?
Brenda: Got me.
Gordon: Dan?
Brenda: Charming.
Gordon: Alina?
Brenda: Competitor.
Gordon: Flammable campsites?
Brenda: Flammable campsites! Hilarious.
Gordon: Purple Kelly?
Brenda: Also hilarious.

Gordon: Before the game you said you wanted to be as a “Deceptive as a Decepticon.” Do you feel like you’ve accomplished that mission?
Brenda:
(Laughs) I think yes and no. I think I was able to get by with some people not realizing how badly I wanted to play the game. But other people saw right through me.

Gordon: I underestimated you before the game, I thought this game would eat you up because you seemed super cheery. Is it nice to go out there and prove jerks like me wrong?
Brenda:
(Laughs) Yeah, that helps a lot when I look back at everything. I never felt like I had to prove anything because I never live my life like that. I’m not a wimpy girl who gets everything in her life or like a popular cheerleader like they put me out there to be. But the way that I played the game was the way I envisioned it. If people made assumptions about me, it’s because they didn’t know me.

‘Survivor: Nicaragua’ Episode 9 Recap: This Little Piggy Went…SMASH!

November 10, 2010

Last Week: The tribes merged, Jane and Marty’s hatred for each other surged, and Alina’s membership in Libertad was purged.

39 Days, 20 People, 1 “Survivor” Blog

Here is the tribe as it currently stands…

The Libertad Tribe (wearing red with lovely white highlights)
•    Benry – 24, Club Promoter
•    Brenda – 27, Paddleboard Company Owner
•    Chase – 24, Race Car Jackman/Country Singer
•    Dan – 63, Real Estate Executive
•    Fabio – 21, Student
•    Holly – 44, Swim Coach
•    Jane – 56, Dog Trainer
•    Kelly S. – 20, Nursing Student
•    Marty – 48, Technology Executive
•    NaOnka – 27, P.E. Teacher
•    Sash – 30, Real Estate Broker

Quick Note: As you may have seen, we’re working with Jeff Probst and the rest of the “Survivor” crew to elect the first class of the “Survivor” Hall of Fame. So, please swing over and vote for your favorite players of all time. Vote early, vote often!

Actually, if you’d like to vote right now, go ahead…I’ll wait.

.
.

You’re back? Excellent, let’s do this.

We start off after Tribal Council and NaOnka is annoyed with how mean Marty was to Jane. She says that Marty was throwing punches and Jane couldn’t block. Kind of like a one-legged girl in a butt-kicking contest, right?

Jane decides that Marty deserves a new nickname. (Oh good, I love “Survivor” nicknames!) She decides on “Farty.” Works for me.

We meet up with Farty the following morning. He’s trying to figure out who voted for him. Sash tells him that he thinks it was Holly.

Marty isn’t prepared to give up the ship just yet. He approaches Benry and Dan with a plan to pretend like they’re going to try get NaOnka out, but to vote for Jane instead. He thinks Sash and Brenda will go for NaOnka after last week’s thievery. I don’t think Marty realizes how valuable it is to keep NaOnka around at this point.

Reward Challenge: The teams will randomly be divided into two teams. Both teams will run through a series of obstacles and try to retrieve three keys. Once they have their keys, they’ll unlock three locks. (Funny how that works.) First team to unlock all three locks and raise their flag wins reward. The winning team will get to go on a zip line tour through a Nicaraguan jungle and enjoy a delicious barbecue.

Quick Note: This challenge is fun because the players have to run through hay, sticks, and bricks just like “The Three Little Pigs.” Hopefully Fabio won’t hyperventilate when he tries to blow the obstacles down.

The teams are randomly drawn, and somehow they ended up with men on one side and women on the other. That is except for Chase who is the odd person out. He’s not out of the challenge though, he gets to pick a team to root for. If that team wins he gets to go on the reward.

Chase picks the ladies. They approve. I guess I can’t say Chase isn’t playing this game anymore.

The challenge starts off and everyone dives into a pile of hay (Gordon Holmes style!). The ladies get their key first, but only by a slight margin. Next up they barrel through a wall of sticks. That was awesome. A miracle someone didn’t lose an eye. They guys retrieve their second key and are cruising. Unfortunately, Immobile Dan slows the guys down on the net crawl. The ladies manage to catch up just as Fabio retrieves the third key. The guys plow through two brick walls, but they look exhausted. Jane looks worse. She barely makes it to the third key. The guys unlock all three locks and win reward. No barbecue for you, Chaseford.

During the post-challenge wrap-up, Kelly Purple Kelly breaks down a little. She’s very upset that she doesn’t get to eat barbecue and doesn’t get to milk her own milk.

JPro gives the gentlemen an opportunity to let someone take their place. None of them give up their reward. Chivalry is dead…and its corpse has been shoved through a brick wall.

We meet up with the gentlemen on their reward and a cloud of sadness has passed over the Holmes household. Why? Because we got to do a zip line tour when we were in Nicaragua. I miss me some Nicaragua.

Dan isn’t very impressed though. Apparently there aren’t any zip lines in Brooklyn. Yeah, there aren’t any in Philly either…

Next up, the guys enjoy their delicious barbecue. Marty uses this as an opportunity to push his agenda. Benry and Fabio seem receptive to it. Sash…not so much.

We return to Libertad and it looks like an otter is eating in the distance. So cute.

Chase’s ladies are giving him mad props for rooting for them. Brenda thinks it was a stupid move. Brenda, Chase, and the rest of them do agree on one thing – they want Marty to go home next.

Chase worries that he can’t trust Brenda after their time away from each other. Brenda thinks he worries too much. NaOnka thinks they might have to boot Chase if he gets too paranoid.

An immunity challenge clue pops up in tree mail that hints at a memory challenge. Jane feels like they have to beat Marty as he’s the only truly evil person left on the tribe. How she says that with a straight face while NaOnka is still around astounds me.

Immunity Challenge: JPro will show the players a series of symbols. They’ll have to use a cube to show the symbols back to JPro in the proper order.

Not much to describe here, so here’s the order in which they were eliminated. Jane and NaOnka were the first two to go, followed by Dan. (What! Eliminated in a challenge where he stands perfectly still!) Holly, Kelly, and Sash get the boot in the next round.

We’re down to Chase, Benry, Fabio, Marty, and Brenda.

Fabio goes out next with Chase right behind him.

We’re down to Marty, Benry, and Brenda.

Benry’s the next to go. They both get the next one right, but Marty gets the one after that wrong. Brenda wins immunity…and for some reason Jane is elated.

Back at camp, the Libertad gentlemen are discussing tricking NaOnka into playing her idol and then voting for Jane.

Benry tells Fabio that they should stick with that plan and that playing stupid is their best bet. Fabio agrees, but says, “I hate playing stupid so much, but it’s like the smartest thing to do right now.”

Excellent, I was looking for a new ring tone.

Chase tells Marty that he’s with Marty and Dan in the NaOnka vote.

NaOnka tells us that she’s feeling uneasy and that if she needs to play the idol, she will.

Chase and Holly talk some strategy and apparently Chase is on to Marty’s vote-for-Jane scheme. He tells Holly that he’ll be voting for Marty.

Marty brings his pitch to Brenda, and she seems to be somewhat receptive to it. But she doesn’t agree to anything.

Brenda and Sash sit down for a meeting of the minds. Sash would like Marty to stick around because he’s a good cook and shares information. They agree that whichever way they vote will show which side they’re aligned with.

That night at Tribal Council, Fabio does the math that there were five women plus Chase back at camp plotting against them during the reward. But he didn’t care because he got to have barbecue.

Marty again reiterates that Jane is a huge threat to take to the end. Brenda agrees that Jane is a threat and that she’d rather take a troublemaker like NaOnka.

Probsty brings up NaOnka’s food theft. She tries to change the subject, but Marty won’t let it go. He says there’s no bigger sin than taking food.

NaOnka responds by saying, “I’m not perfect, I’m a humanitarian, I’m a human.”

Two ring tones!

NaOnka continues saying that she hates Marty’s walk and his hair. She then says it’s like a track meet where you try to intimidate your opponent.  Fabio tries to interject, but she shushes him.

A teacher of America’s youth, ladies and gentlemen!

NaOnka and Fabio continue to get into it and it is en-ter-taining. F-bombs are dropped, Fabio facepalms himself, Marty laughs. Best of all, when it’s all over poor Probst is speechless.

Good times.

Voting Time: Jane votes for Marty (saying Marty is a disgrace to fathers everywhere), Marty votes for Jane, and the rest of the votes weren’t shown.

(Marty strutted back to the fire and was greeted with a middle finger from NaOnka.)

Probst asks if anyone wants to play an idol. Nobody does.

One vote for Jane, one vote for Marty, three votes for Jane, four votes for Marty, and the tenth person voted out of “Survivor: Nicaragua” and the second member of the jury is…Marty.

There goes my pick!

Verdict: I’m honestly shocked that Marty was able to sway that many votes. I honestly do hate to see him go because he seems to really understand the game, but this may just be one of those seasons where you need to throw the book out the window.

That being said, the reward challenge was very cool and the Tribal Council was hysterical. Hopefully things are picking up.

And, I have no idea who’s going home next.  That’s bad for my Power Rankings but good for the show.

Who’s Going to Win?
Could Fabio and Benry sneak in there? Nobody’s talking about them.

Power Rankings Results: Team Dragon Slayer and Team Truth Seeker tied again! They both had Marty in spot eleven. The current score is now Team Dragon Slayer 107, Team Truth Seeker 111.

What Do You Think? Was tonight’s show better? Does Brenda like anybody? Would you put up with NaOnka for 39 days for a million dollars?
