John Kirhoffer is the brain behind some of  “Survivor’s” most difficult and exciting challenges. After 12 years and more than 25 seasons, John continues to design and execute innovative challenges that never fail to impress. His commitment, attention to detail and dedication to creating some of the best challenges on TV are a critical part of “Survivor’s” continued success. With hundreds of challenges on his resume, he credits “Boulder Dash” from season three (Africa) and “Vertical Maze” from season nine (Vanuatu – Islands of Fire) among his favorites.

John Kirhoffer’s 2012 “Survivor” Hall of Fame Ballot

Ethan Zohn – (“Survivor: Africa” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): I feel Ethan deserves an actual statue in our virtual Hall of Fame. Having played only twice, he has once won the game of “Survivor,” and has certainly won the game of life. Ethan is one of the most deserving winners in “Survivor” history, through exceptional athleticism, genuine compassion, and a sincerity of heart he was able to capture the hearts of America and title of Sole Survivor in season three.  Ethan became a true role model for kids, passionately committed to his Grassroots Soccer program, then battled cancer valiantly, with an unbreakable spirit which truly gives a heroic connotation to the word “Survivor.”

Benjamin “Coach” Wade – (“Survivor: Tocantins,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: South Pacific”): Once again for me, Coach is a “Survivor” classic! He had three seasons; from a self-absorbed narcissist with epic and often bizarre tales of adventure and delusions of grandeur, to the more humbled, genuinely sympathetic and mentoring soul forced to compromise his morality to compete in a game designed to conflict with ones values…I think he may have come out of his “Survivor” tenure with well more than a million dollars worth of spirituality, self-awareness, and actual honor.

Amanda Kimmel – (“Survivor: China,” “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): And also ONCE AGAIN for me…Amanda deserves a spot in our Hall of Fame. Many of us discounted her from early episodes in China as the beautiful, dingy, pageant queen whose crowning achievement was losing her top in a mud challenge and proclaiming “My mom is going to kill me!” Then she aligned with Todd Herzog, and together choreographed an amazing strategy that got her to the end, only to claim second place. And then in “Fans vs. Favorites” she became one of the architects of the women’s alliance with another of my most memorable lines in “Survivor” history. After an incredible scene of digging a mile of ditches in the sand on Exile Island she showed up with an EMMY-quality performance of resigned dejection at Tribal Council when at the clutch moment she proclaimed, “When I said I didn’t have the hidden Immunity Idol I didn’t…” She then strutted over to Jeff and continued, “BUT I HAVE IT!!” She made it again to the final two…and alas, again fell short against Parvati.

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame 2012 Ballot – Sandra Diaz-Twine

November 27, 2012

2010 'Survivor' Hall of Fame Inductee Sandra Diaz-Twine (CBS)

The “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to have 2010 inductee Sandra Diaz-Twine as a member of the Executive Voting Committee. Sandra Diaz-Twine’s 2012 Hall of Fame Ballot

Todd Herzog – (“Survivor: China”): He took early control of his tribe and his social game made his tribe trust him. He was instrumental in blindsiding James, Frosti, and Jean-Robert, making James the dumbest player at the time, going home with two idols in his possession. Lastly, he had one of the best Tribal Council’s where he admitted to lying and was still awarded the million dollars.

Rob Cesternino – (“Survivor: The Amazon” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): He was an aggressive strategic player who didn’t believe in loyalty. He was effective at switching alliances to keep himself in the game, and always had several deals on the table. He went with whatever benefited him and kept him alive in the game.

Jerri Manthey – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): Jerry grew as a player and a person while playing “Survivor.” She made the final four on her 3rd attempt at the game. Even as a Villain she used her negatives and made them positives. As a Villain she was a vital asset in the tribe and she had solid relationships with every member. She made them feel like part of the team.

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame 2012 Ballot – Host and Executive Producer Jeff Probst

Jeff Probst’s 2012 Hall of Fame Ballot

With each year it gets tougher to choose because there are so many people who deserve a spot in the “Survivor” Hall Of Fame.  I could easily make a case for another dozen right now but since I am allowed only three spots I will play by the rules and will give my attention to some of the veterans of the game.

Amanda Kimmel – (“Survivor: China,” “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): The fact that she has never brought home the brass ring doesn’t take away from the truth that she is one of the most consistently strong finishers in the history of “Survivor.”  She improved each time she played. She was always a strong physical presence and was not afraid to make big moves to keep herself in the game.  Amanda’s only downfall was Tribal Council where she often stumbled when pressed for an answer but it never kept her from coming back for more.  Amanda most definitely deserves a spot in the hallowed “Survivor” Hall Of Fame.

Ethan Zohn – (“Survivor: Africa” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): There are two strong reasons that Ethan belongs in the “Survivor” Hall Of Fame.  First, he won “Survivor: Africa,” one of the toughest seasons ever and he won with class.  There has never been a bad word uttered about Ethan.  He has always carried himself with grace.  Equally important is how Ethan has used his celebrity since winning the million dollars and title of Sole Survivor.   He founded Grassroots Soccer inspiring kids across the globe while educating them about HIV/AIDS.  The only question about Ethan is why did it take so long for him to be included in the HOF?

I only have one spot left and there are so many I want to include… but I’m giving my third spot to someone who I think has been a bit overlooked in years gone by and that is…

Rob Cesternino – (“Survivor: The Amazon” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): His first appearance was a milestone.  “Survivor” had never before had someone who combined such an amazing knowledge of the game with a very clever wit and ability to tell a funny story at any time about any other player.  Rob took some knocks for being a “one-note” player but that one note was very effective and incredibly entertaining.  Rob has gone on to use his wit to create a very successful online presence in the reality world.  He analyzes new seasons and new players, not afraid to criticize but never going beyond a fair assessment of a complicated and devilish game.

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame 2012 Ballot – Cirie Fields

November 16, 2012

2011 'Survivor' Hall of Fame Inductee Cirie Fields (CBS)

The “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to welcome 2011 inductee Cirie Fields to the Executive Voting Committee. As a member of this exclusive committee, Cirie (along with Host Jeff Probst, Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer, and other “Survivor” luminaries) has accepted an awesome responsibility. The committee’s votes will make up 50% of the final tally for entry into the prestigious Class of 2012. The other 50% will come from “Survivor” fans like you.

Cirie Fields’s 2012 Hall of Fame Ballot

Stephenie LaGrossa – (“Survivor: Palau,” “Survivor: Guatemala,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): My first pick is Stephenie LaGrossa. She is one of the toughest pretty chicks I know! Stephenie has played the game three times and made it to finals in “Guatemala”! Stephenie was also the only Survivor left from her tribe during “Palau” and she was a challenge beast. She also spent a night in the cave alone (that in itself is commendable! Trust me… I stayed in that cave.) For these reasons, I choose Stephenie.

Colby Donaldson – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): My second pick is Colby Donaldson, even though Colby didn’t succumb to my feminine wiles or my motherly charm during “Heroes vs. Villains.” He also played three times and was a challenge beast during his first season! Colby would have won had he not taken Tina to the finals with him during “The Australian Outback,” which he was well aware of and he still took her. All the more reason Colby should be a Hall of Famer!

My last pick was a toss up between Amanda Kimmel (“Survivor: China,” “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”) and Jonny Fairplay (“Survivor: Pearl Islands” and “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites”). If you watch “Survivor” like a super fan or if you know of the show just from commercials, anyone who knows “Survivor” knows Fairplay as the guy who killed off his grandmother for a million bucks! On the other hand you have Amanda who played back-to-back seasons (which was grueling in and of itself) and both seasons Amanda made it to finals.  Had she had a better mouthpiece she would have won the whole kit and kaboodle! Amanda’s showing in “Heroes vs. Villains” was nothing to sneeze at either, and for these reasons I have to go with Amanda as my final pick!

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame 2012 Ballot – ‘Survivor’ Producer Jesse Jensen

November 15, 2012

Jesse Jensen (CBS)

As a member of the Executive Voting Committee, “Survivor” Producer Jesse Jensen (along with Host Jeff Probst, Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer, and other “Survivor” luminaries) has an awesome responsibility. The committee’s votes will make up 50% of the final tally for entry into the prestigious Class of 2012. The other 50% will come from “Survivor” fans like you.

Jesse Jensen has been with “Survivor” since 2000 working his way up from Art Department to Art Director to Producer. His creativity allows for some of the most visually stunning Tribal Councils that set the stage for those great dramatic moments that we love so much.

Jesse Jensen’s 2012 Hall of Fame Ballot

Ben “Coach” Wade – (“Survivor: Tocantins,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: South Pacific”): I love this guy. He has always been such a favorite amongst the crew. The “Dragon Slayer” has to make the “Survivor” Hall of Fame! Love him or hate him, Coach, especially after his last effort in “Survivor: South Pacific,” is probably one of our most larger-than-life players. He has always given us amazing drama and funny stories that keep us all entertained throughout his seasons. I’d be very disappointed if he doesn’t make the cut this year.

Rupert Boneham – (“Survivor: Pearl Islands,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): I voted for him last time and still think he deserves a slot in the Hall of Fame. He has been out of the lime light for a few years now but he is still such an iconic character for the show. People still totally associate earlier seasons of the show with “the bearded guy with the tie dyed T-shirt.” His amazing popularity in his heyday was shown when America voted him the million-dollar winner on “Survivor: America’s Tribal Council” as a special episode to the “All-Star” season with him receiving 85% of the 38 million votes cast. Rupert deserves to be in the Hall of Fame not due to any amazing strategy or gameplay but simply his amazing popularity with the viewers.

Stephenie LaGrossa – (“Survivor: Palau,” “Survivor: Guatemala,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): I’m also going to nominate Stephenie yet again this year. Like the others she has played the game three times, that in itself means that we felt her an extremely worthy contestant. Her first season in “Palau” she was extremely popular and she showed us what an amazing battler and physical competitor she is. She was such a good personality and player that we brought her back the very next season to compete in “Guatemala.” She didn’t excel in “Heroes vs. Villains” but played a tough game. The dice just didn’t fall right for her that time around. In my opinion, she’s one of the most well-rounded and popular players never to win the game.

James Clement – (“Survivor: China,” “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): Simply because he’s the strongest player to ever play the game. He can roll over anyone! He wasn’t two-time fan favorite for nothing!

Kim Spradlin – (“Survivor: One World): She dominated her season and she’s also a great individual competitor winning four individual immunity challenges!

Amanda Kimmel – (“Survivor: China,” “Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): I will vote for Amanda every single year until she makes it! She is a wonderful strategic and physical player and her social game isn’t so bad either. Amanda is one of the strongest strategic players I’ve ever played with! A back-to-back player who once had me shaking in my boots during “Heroes vs. Villains”! Believe it.

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame Post Mortem

December 23, 2011

The “Survivor” off season is finally upon us. While for most people that means an extra hour free on Wednesday nights, for me it means a break from Power Rankings, episode recaps, and exit interviews. I hardly know what to do with myself.

(That’s totally not true, I’m going to get to work rescuing Princess Zelda.)

What multiplies that workload is when it’s “Survivor” Hall of Fame time. On top of the previously mentioned work you’ve got coordinating executive committee votes, managing the vote tabulation team, creating art, updating the Web site, and about a dozen other things.

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame Inductee – Tom Westman

December 16, 2011
Tom Westman (CBS)

Tom Westman (CBS)

Fifty percent of the voting for the ‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame was based on the ballots of the Executive Voting Committee. This blue-ribbon panel consists of “Survivor” luminaries such as Host and Executive Producer Jeff Probst, Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer, Executive Producer David Burris, Producer Jesse Jensen, the “Survivor” Hall of Fame Class of 2010, members of the “Survivor” press corps, and XFINITY TV’s “Survivor” Guy Gordon Holmes.

The other fifty percent came from “Survivor” fans like you.

The “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to announce that “Survivor: Palau” Champion Tom Westman will join Cirie Fields and Ozzy Lusth in the Class of 2011.

We had a chance to speak with the newly crowned Hall of Famer to get his thoughts on his induction…

How does it feel to be honored by a vote made up of your “Survivor” peers, the ‘Survivor’ production crew, the press, and the fans?
Tom Westman: Truly honored to have even been chosen as an inductee to the “Survivor” Hall of Fame.  I have a lot of respect for some of the stand-out players in the game, and it is great to be considered in their company.  I am proud to be a part of a production that has continued to set the bar for quality and entertainment in the reality TV world.  One of the greatest compliments I have received came from a camera person who was not able to speak to us during the game, but connected once the final Tribal Council wrapped.  He said that after 10 seasons, and 160 players, he had not seen anyone enjoy the experience more than me.  I recognized how unique the situation was, and appreciated every moment.  The game is exceptional on so many levels, and it is why I continue to be hooked on it today.

My experience with fans of the show has always been a pleasure.  Every aspect of participating on “Survivor” has been positive. It has let me get to know some wonderful people.  Many fans point out that it is one of the few shows that they watch as a family.  This is true in my home as well.

What’ve you been up to since we last saw you on the show?
Westman: I retired from the FDNY in 2005 and entered the corporate world as a sales rep selling group benefits to corporations.  It was a radical change in life style, but one that I have enjoyed.

What are your thoughts on “Survivor: South Pacific”?
Westman: I have been watching the current season, and feel it is one of the better ones.  Interesting characters, great challenges, and plenty of drama.

What the Executive Voting Committee said about Tom…

“He was respected by his entire tribe who recognized his leadership abilities. Tom was a challenge dominator. His physical strength ensured several tribe and individual immunity victories, and he maintained integrity and loyalty to his alliance.” – Sandra Diaz-Twine – Winner of “Survivor: Pearl Islands” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” and 2010 “Survivor” Hall of Fame Inductee

“He’s an all-around great player; physically, socially, and strategically. Everyone loved Tom because he truly is a great guy and a fierce competitor.” – Winner of “Survivor: Redemption Island” and 2010 “Survivor” Hall of Fame Inductee

“Tom is the Bruce Willis of ‘Survivor’—only more handsome and courageous. The New York City firefighter’s leadership, strength, indomitability, and integrity earned him the admiration of his fans and fellow Palau competitors, who gave him a million dollars—and top billing.” – Drusilla Moorhouse – E! Online

“Until Boston Rob on ‘Redemption Island,’ Tom had the most dominating season in ‘Survivor’ history in Palau when you factor in physical, social, and strategic gameplay. He led his tribe to an undefeated ass-whupping of the Ulong tribe, then coasted post-merge to the win. How the hell was he not in the original Hall of Fame class? Who’s voting on these things anyway?” – Dalton Ross – Entertainment Weekly

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame Inductee – Ozzy Lusth

Ozzy Lusth (CBS)

The “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to announce that Ozzy Lusth will join Cirie Fields in the Class of 2011. Ozzy received the most executive committee votes out of any nominee.

We had a chance to speak with the newly crowned Hall of Famer to get his thoughts on his induction…

How does it feel to be honored by a vote made up of your “Survivor” peers, the ‘Survivor’ production crew, the press, and the fans?
Ozzy Lusth: Well, it feels like I just woke up from a dream where I could fly, shoot energy balls, become invisible, talk to water creatures, control the weather, and brew a damn good beer; hey at least I can actually do one of them! Seriously, THANKS!!! To all the people that watched me live a dream, it’s been a great journey! I hope to continue to inspire people to follow their hearts and imaginations.

What the Executive Voting Committee said about Ozzy…

“The most physical player to ever play this game is Ozzy. You have to give him credit for that. He is the number one most physical player to ever play the game by far.” – Russell Hantz – 2010 “Survivor” Hall of Fame Inductee

“Genetically bred to play the game from a physical perspective, we now must add to his list of accomplishments a heightened understanding of his own strengths and weaknesses, that is self-awareness — which led directly to the brash, risky, and well-considered strategic moves of this season.” – David Burris – “Survivor” Executive Producer

“Probably the most accomplished performer in challenges we have ever seen on the show. He is a power house both in and out of the water but also has a calm, focused way about him that keeps his mind clear to also dominate in the problem-solving and puzzle elements of the challenges. – Jesse Jensen – “Survivor” Producer

“The blissed-out beach bum deserves a spot in the record books for schooling his competitors in challenges and making tree monkeys seem clumsy.” – Drusilla Moorhouse – E! Online

“If anyone was ever born to be left to his own devices on an island, it’s Ozzy. The guy is the absolute epitome of the living off the land conceit that “Survivor” is all about.” – Dalton Ross – Entertainment Weekly

Fifty percent of the voting for the ‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame was based on the ballots of the Executive Voting Committee. Who are the other inductees? Visit the ‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame to find out!

The “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to induct Cirie Fields into the Class of 2011. Cirie received the most fan votes out of any nominee.

We had a chance to speak with the newly crowned Hall of Famer to get her thoughts on this honor…

How does it feel to be honored by a vote made up of your “Survivor” peers, the ‘Survivor’ production crew, the press, and the fans?
Cirie:
Being a fan of the show since the days of Richard Hatch, when I was first chosen to be on “Survivor” I was in total disbelief. To think that of the hundreds of thousands of people who apply I was the one selected. The whole experience was surreal. But now to be voted into the Hall of Fame is more than unbelievable. My whole “Survivor” experience was amazing, the places I got to see, to be able to play the game that I enjoy and more importantly, to meet the greatest people ever, both on the show and behind the scenes. Everyone was so gracious and inviting, making my entire experience the adventure of a lifetime and for that I’m truly grateful. But now, to be selected by the fans, the crew and the press is more than I can fathom. I have been humbled by the entire experience and coming from the “girl on the couch” who thought she could play this game I am so very grateful to everyone. This was the opportunity of a lifetime for me and the friends and fans will be in my heart always. Thanks to everyone.

What’ve you been up to since we last saw you?
Cirie:
Right after “Heroes vs. Villains” I went to Japan with other “Survivor” alumni to support the troops. I also auditioned for a role on a talk show. Just being considered for something like that boggles my mind and eases the pain of not getting it. Since then I’ve been working and spending time with my wonderful family and watching my three boys grow into three handsome young men (where did the time go?). Now I’ve thrusted myself into furthering my career as an operating room nurse coordinator.

Are you enjoying “Survivor: South Pacific”?
Cirie:
Well, I can’t help but envy the notion of Redemption Island, and watching a player like Cochran who’s really bright, hilariously funny, and physically inept. I can see myself in him so I was really rooting for him. Ozzy, what can I say? He’s still amazing, I think after the show wraps up he’ll probably stay another few weeks just for the hell of it and who’s better suited? Brandon leaves me questioning my own faith and his sanity at times. I see Coach in a different light now. He has transformed from the quirky Dragon Slayer to a savvy ruler and tribesman slayer. You go, boy! I love all the new challenges, but, I always love them from the couch and not so much on the beach as a participant. Great season! I can’t wait to see who will be the sole survivor.

What the fans said about Cirie…

“One of the best players to never win, easy.” – Christian

“One of the best strategic players ever.”– Hawk_941

“Biggest transformation any contestant has ever had.” – Jonathan

“Cirie has an almost magical ability to just tell people something and make them believe it, no matter how ludicrous.” – James

“The perfect combination of personality and strategy. She should have won in Panama and Fans vs. Favs.” – Brian D.

What the Executive Voting Committee said about Cirie…
“Her asset is her disarming smile and her ability to make you forget that she is your opponent. She also deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame because she epitomizes the person who got up off the couch to live their adventure and that’s what the show is all about.” – Jeff Probst – “Survivor” Executive Producer and Host

“She played a great strategic and social game all three times. She is super smart and definitely someone that is a threat every time. Cirie is someone you would want in your alliance and not outside of it.” – “Boston” Rob Mariano – Winner of “Survivor: Redemption Island” and 2010 “Survivor” Hall of Fame Inductee

“What’s incredible about Cirie is how far she came from when she first started on “Exile Island.” The woman was afraid of the outdoors for crissakes! But she evolved into a stone cold killer who would have won “Fans vs. Favorites” had there not been so many injuries to other players (causing producers to abort the original final-three plan).” – Dalton Ross – Entertainment Weekly
