‘Survivor: Redemption Island’ Power Rankings: Round 4

March 15, 2011

The Rules: Each week, “Survivor: Nicaragua” finalist Matthew “Sash” Lenahan and XFINITY TV’s “Survivor” loudmouth Gordon Holmes will create separate power rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the two players will earn. For example, if David is voted out this week, Sash will receive 1 point and Gordon will receive 6 points. Also, each player will pick who they think will win at Redemption Island. If they choose correctly they will receive a bonus point. At the end of the season, the person  with the most points will be named the “Survivor: Redemption Island” Power Rankings Challenge Champion.

Last Week: Sash had Kristina in spot 15 while I had her in spot 14. Both of us thought Russell would prevail at Redemption Island, so no bonus points for either competitor. Sash still leads by a score of 38 to 34

TEAM SASH

Current Score: 38

.

TEAM GORDON

Current Score: 34

david . bostonrob
#1 David – David is playing well.  As long as he keeps his arrogance in-check, he’ll win this game. . #1 Boston Rob – I told myself I’d never put Russell or Rob this high in the rankings, but Rob is untouchable right now. He’s got an immunity idol and Ometepe can’t afford to lose any challenge strength.
mike . mike
#2 Mike – Mike has been trained to be a loyal soldier and will follow David to the end. . #2 Mike – I doubt we’ll see much drama from the Zapatera Six until Russell’s ladies are sent to Redemption Island. So, Mike holds onto his spot until he does something stupid to cause me to drop him.
natalie . grant
#3 Natalie – Staying out of trouble and staying close to Rob will carry Natalie far. . #3 Grant – He’s like the Chewbacca to Rob’s Han Solo. He’s also super safe at Ometepe until they hit the merge, then it’s back to Kashyyyk. (Yes, I’m a nerd.)
ashley . sarita
#4 Ashley – One of the most physical women in this game looks to be in a good position at the moment, but Ashley will need a stronger ally than Natalie to make it to the end. . #4 Sarita – What would have happened if Sarita wasn’t at Redemption Island? Would Ralph have shown the idol? Would he have given up his social security number? Would he have sent all of his money to a deposed Nigerian prince?
grant . julie
#5 Grant – Grant is sticking close to Rob which will help him maneuver through the game and get within reach of the end. . #5 Julie – Not much from Julie this past week. Hopefully she can sleep now that the big, bad Russell Hantz isn’t in the game anymore.
ralph . david
#6 Ralph – Ralph still has the idol and we still need subtitles when he speaks.  Showing everyone the idol was a huge mistake and he will pay for it. . #6 David – Why David’s big drop this week? Because Russell spilled the beans about a knock down, drag out fight he had with Stephanie. I thought he was a cool-headed tactician. Maybe I was too quick to crown him with Stephen Fishbach’s wizard hat.
steve . steve
#7 Steve – Russell called out the Steve-Mike alliance after his Redemption loss which won’t help Steve at all when these tribes merge. . #7 Steve – I don’t have a very good reason for saying this, but Steve strikes me as someone who could be easily outsmarted. I could see Boston Rob or David getting the best of him very easily.
sarita . ralph
#8 Sarita – The first smart move she made in this game was telling Ralph not to show his idol.  It was a good start, but she’ll need a lot more than that to stick around. . #8 Ralph – Of the 40 stupid things Ralph did last week, was anything dumber than showing his idol to his alliance after Russell was gone? So what was the point of risking a split vote if you had the idol? What if Julie had flipped? Erik Reichenbach would have had competition for dumbest move ever.
julie . natalie
#9 Julie Julie should have thought through her double-cross of Russell before playing her hand during the last Tribal Council.  Stephanie and Krista now have dirt on her, which will ultimately send her packing. . #9 Natalie – Natalie’s in a great spot right now as Rob’s right-hand faux-Amber. If Team Rob gets to the merge and can overcome a probable numbers disadvantage, she could win this whole thing.
bostonrob . ashley
#10 Boston Rob – Rob was clever to leave camp and search feverishly for that idol.  Those 15 minutes of searching paid off, but has Rob’s 15 minutes of reality fame expired? . #10 Ashley – It may look like Ashley is super low on the list, but I still think she’s safe. She’s a goner if Ometepe keeps dropping challenges, but she’s safe for now.
andrea . andrea
#11 Andrea – So far so good.  Andrea has successfully kept a low profile and now just needs to survive to the merge for another chance in this game. . #11 Andrea – Ometepe needs to win immunity challenges. And, Boston Rob probably heard about Andrea telling Matt that she didn’t vote for him. So, if Phillip can manage to stay, Andrea will be going next.
krista . krista
#12 Krista – If Stephanie is the new Russell, Krista is her Natalie.  The problem for Krista is that only one Russell exists and his moves cannot be duplicated. . #12 Krista – What should be tops on Krista’s “To Do” list? Distancing herself from Stephanie. But, if the previews are to be believed, they’re gonna perform some Russell-esque camp-destroying performance art.
stephanie . phillip
#13 Stephanie – Stephanie is smart and she knows the only way to save herself is to cause some trouble around camp.  Could she be the second coming of Russell? . #13 Phillip – As if it’s not bad enough that you’re annoying the crap out of everyone, now you’re trying to pull a power play with the one guy who’s helping you stay in the game. Next time Ometepe loses immunity you’ll be hunting crabs on Redemption Island.
phillip . stephanie
#14 Phillip – Phillip’s only chance at life in this game is to go undercover, but I don’t think they taught him that skill at Langley. . #14 Stephanie – Russell is gone, he’s out of the game…and you still defend him. You’re not just going down with the ship, you’re having your mail forwarded to the bottom of the ocean.
matt . matt
Redemption Island Winner – Matt will continue his winning streak against Kristina in this duel.  Look for him to stay awhile. . Redemption Island Winner – No reason to vote against a guy on a hot streak.

‘Survivor’ Castaway Interview: Russell Hantz

March 10, 2011

“You can never play ‘Survivor’ again because people will be gunning for you.’” – Gordon Holmes to Russell Hantz – May 17, 2010

I may be known for my terrible predictions, but that one was dead on…

Russell never got a chance to get started in “Survivor: Redemption Island.” All of the sock burning, trash talking, and back stabbing he’d gotten away with in previous seasons finally came back to haunt him.

I spoke with Russell the day after his removal from the game and found out about his emotional farewell, how he tried to play the game differently, and how he unintentionally helped Ralph find the hidden immunity idol.

Gordon Holmes: Things got emotional last night. What was going through your mind when you broke down after the Redemption Island challenge?
Russell Hantz:
Man, I love the game so much. I respect the game so much, and I respect the people involved. It’s much more than, “Oh Russell’s such a baby. He’s getting voted out. He can’t even stand up for himself.” It had nothing to do with me personally getting voted out.  It had everything to do with me being supposed to go all the way. It’s really unfair for me because my millions of fans just know I’m going to go all the way. I look at Jeff (Probst) and I see the disappointment in his face. I see the disappointment in the whole crew. And when I’m looking around it breaks my heart because I felt like I let everybody down.
Gordon: After you got it back together, you coughed up some information about the Zapatera alliance. How did it feel to get that last dig in to Ralph?
Russell: The guy stumbled onto the idol because I told him to look for rocks to make the fire pit hotter. He stumbled onto it because of me. And if you notice, when he finds it he tosses it to the side. He still doesn’t have a clue. He keeps saying, “This ol’ boy is pretty good at this game too.” And he outs himself! He was ready to take his idol out of the bag. That’s what I wanted. Really, Ralph?  You are a retard. And I use that word as in “The Hangover.”
Gordon: When we spoke after “Heroes Vs. Villains” you said you wouldn’t have a problem voting for someone if they stabbed you in the back. If you had made the jury, would you have voted for Ralph?
Russell: It depends on who was with him. It depends on what he did in the game and what I saw on the jury. But if he played the game the best and he used that idol to save one of his teammates to still have numbers, then yes I would have. But people don’t play like that, they don’t play like me. I save my alliance till the end.

Gordon: I was in the camp that thought you’d never get a chance to fairly compete in “Survivor” again because your tribe would be automatically gunning for you.
Russell:
This whole tribe was thinking of getting rid of Russell from day one. It was the “Get Rid of Russell Game” at first. This wasn’t “Survivor.” They must’ve gotten a little extra money to get rid of me, there was a bounty on my head. I’m going to have to ask Mark (Burnett) if they put a bounty on my head, because that’s how they’re playing.
Gordon: I disagreed with getting rid of you so early. I think it’d be wise to team up with you Mick Trimming-style and let you take all the bullets.
Russell: Right and then you’ll be safe. So yes, it doesn’t make sense. But they were so scared of me, it was like I was John Gotti. I’d look them in the eye and they’d start shaking. They were flustered just talking to me.

Gordon: How close were you to getting something going at Zapatera?
Russell:
Trust me, dude, I was close. If Julie would have made that switch it would have been a totally different game. My tribe would have went all the way to the end of the game.
Gordon: Did you ever think you had Julie’s vote?
Russell: I thought maybe…Stephanie was like, “Oh no, I believe her.”  I was thinking, “I don’t know, but we maybe have a shot.” Because Julie was the one who told me they were going to throw the challenge. So, by her telling me that, I thought maybe it would happen. But time will tell how well she does in the game. But I can tell you this, this is what I would’ve done; I would’ve taken Julie, Stephanie, and Krista all the way to the end. I would have voted out Stephanie, because Stephanie was a very strategic player. And you know what would have happened? Julie would have won.
Gordon: Did you tell Julie that?
Russell: I told her that. I told her I could guarantee her the top five. She asked if she could be my Parvati (Shallow) and I could take her all the way. I said “No.” I wasn’t going to promise that.

Gordon: One of the knocks against you is that you were playing a very similar game to what we saw in “Samoa” and “Heroes Vs. Villains.” Would you agree or disagree with that?
Russell:
I was playing different, they just weren’t showing it.
Gordon: What moves were you making that we didn’t see?
Russell: The first people I went up to were Mike and David. And we all fist-bumped and it was on. And then I went up to Stephanie. And then I went back to them because I didn’t want them to think I was doing stuff behind their back. And I said, “If you want her gone, that’s fine. But you have my vote and you have her vote. “

Gordon: Alright, let’s get to know your tribe a little better. We’ll start off with Steve.
Russell:
Steve is an NFL football player that is weak. He is weak in mind, body, and soul. That’s why his first injury in the NFL…he quits. It comes with the game, the game’s about life. He’s a quitter in life. He’ll never have nothing. What is he 70 years old and he has nothing? He probably drives a Volvo.

Gordon: Alright, David?
Russell:
David knows he made a huge mistake, because he’s the smartest guy out there. If David would have aligned with me, I think I would have done better than I would have with Julie. The only reason I didn’t go with David is because he got into a big argument with Stephanie that they didn’t show. They were cussing and screaming. I thought there was no way he was going to align with me cause that’s her problem, her mouth.

Gordon: Let’s try Julie.
Russell:
Julie is the weakest fire fighter. If my house is on fire I’m not calling her.

Gordon: Ralph?
Russell:
Ralph is the dumbest person I know on the face of the Earth. He’s trying to do all that stuff for the camera. You know, crowing like a rooster don’t get ya popular, Ralph.
Gordon: Yeah, that’s true.
Russell: And you stumbled over that idol. Don’t think you got the best of me. Cause I’m not even out there and I’m still out there. They’re going to be talking Russell-this, Russell-that for the rest of the show.  You can get rid of me here, but not in spirit. I’m still there messing with you.

Gordon: Let’s talk about Krista.
Russell:
Krista was my Natalie (White) out there, but Krista was much more aggressive. They didn’t show a lot about Krista, but she’s so honest. She’s such a good person. She’s a Christian girl. She would’ve stuck with me to the end.  She was like a Natalie, but with a game. I don’t want to diminish Natalie though, Natalie is a sweetheart.

Gordon: Tell me about Mike.
Russell:
Mike is the definition of douche bag. He is that tool.

Gordon: (Laughs) Alright, Stephanie?
Russell:
If Stephanie doesn’t go far in the game, it’s a shame. Everybody is going to hate this comment, but I’ve played with the best. Stephanie is just as good as if not better than Parvati. Stephanie is stronger than Parvati, she’s more strategic. The only thing she doesn’t have that Parvati has is that Stephanie has that Sandra (Diaz-Twine) attitude. She can be lippy. But she’s so much better looking than Sandra.

Gordon: Let’s try Sarita.
Russell:
They ain’t showing this, but she’s in control. She’s the one I’d see in the corner talking and flaring her arms around and telling them what to do. It’s like everyone else was little puppets listening to her. She was the one nudging dumbass not to show his idol.

Gordon: Last night you said this would be your last time playing. If it is, how would you like to be remembered?
Russell:
Twenty years from now when “Survivor” is all over and you ask someone to name three names, it’s probably going to be Parvati, Russell, and Rob. I want to be remembered as one of the greatest players, the most passionate player, that loved the game. I got addicted to that game like crack.

‘Survivor: Redemption Island’ Recap: Last CHantz?

March 9, 2011

Note: I’m aware that the headline for this article is brutal. However, I apologize for nothing.

Last Week: Boston Rob scored the first of the immunity idol clues, Zapatera faced a challenge and intentionally tried to lose, while Russell being voted out was the episode’s big news.

39 Days, 18 People, 1 “Survivor” Blog

Let’s take a look at the tribes as they currently stand…

The Ometepe Tribe (wearing orange)

Andrea – 21, Student
Ashley – 25, Nurse
Grant – 29, Yoga Instructor
Kristina – 46, Law Student
Natalie – 19, Dancer
Phillip – 52, Technology Executive
Rob – 35, “Survivor” Hall of Famer

The Zapatera Tribe (wearing purple)

David – 31, Defense Attorney
Julie – 50, Firefighter
Krista – 25, Pharmaceutical Rep
Mike – 31, Former Marine
Ralph – 45, Farmer
Sarita – 36, Visual Effects Producer
Stephanie – 26, Waitress
Steve – 51, Former NFL Player

Currently Residing on Redemption Island (wearing hope)

Matt – 22, Pre-Med Student
Russell – 38, “Survivor” Hall of Famer

We start off at Redemption Island where Matt is telling us how cool it is that he’s been blindsided by Boston Rob and is now bunking with Russell. Sounds like a “Survivor” fantasy camp to me.

The following morning, Phillip is annoying his tribe mates by sweeping the campsite while they’re trying to sleep.

When I’m teaching my class at “Survivor” fantasy camp…

Rule #1: Don’t be noisy while other people are trying to sleep.

Rule #2: Don’t try to sweep dirt off of a dirt floor.

Not only that, but Boston Rob is annoyed that Phillip is wandering around in his fuchsia tighty-whiteys.

Rule #3: When “Survivor” gives you your swimwear, wear it.

Over at Zapatera, Natalie and Krista know that they’re next on the chopping block. Their only hope? Finding the immunity idol.

Steve realizes this must be their next move. Ralph lets him know that that isn’t a concern by showing him and the rest of the alliance his hidden immunity idol.

Mike and Julie are both worried that Russell could come back into the game and get them. That’s the best part of the Redemption Island twist, it turns Russell Hantz into Freddy Krueger.

Special invites for Redemption Island arrive in tree mail. Phillip and Kristina will attend for Ometepe, while Ralph and Sarita will attend for Zapatera. Formal dress is optional.

Before the challenge starts off, Russell lets us know that Matt’s a good guy, but he’ll have to destroy him. All part of keeping hope alive, I guess.

Matt intends to win to honor his God. Uh-oh, last time Russell squared off against a prayer warrior Natalie White walked out with a million-dollar check.

Redemption Island Challenge:
Each of the competitors will use a set of dominoes to build a line that travels up and down a wobbly bridge. Once a player is happy with his line of blocks, he’ll return to the beginning and set off the domino reaction. If it successfully reaches the end, it will knock a ball down a ramp and through a tile. If not, they’ll have to start all over again. The first person to break their tile earns redemption (for this episode, at least).

We start off and Matt gets off to a bit of a lead. He’s finally happy with his set-up and knocks the first block over. It gets about halfway through and stops.

Russell’s up next. He starts it off and has the same result as Matt, only about half-way.

Confession:
I’m not a Russell fan. (I tend to root for Tyson Apostol and Carolina Eastwood.) But I’ll admit that my heart sunk when Russell’s dominoes stopped. What can I say, the guy’s fun to watch.

Matt hustles and gives his line another try. He sets it off…and is successful. The tile is broken, Matt wins redemption, Russell is a goner, and socks everywhere rejoice.

With Russell’s fate no longer in doubt, Dr. Probst then cover hope with a sheet. The official time of hope’s death was 8:13 pm ET.

During the post-challenge wrap-up, Russell starts to well up and cry. He pulls his hat down over his eyes so the others can’t see his tears.

When Russell finally does speak, he says he respects the game too much to go out like that. He then tears into Ralph and Sarita for throwing the challenge.

Ralph takes exception to this, even admitting that he already has the immunity idol. Krista tries to talk him out of showing Russell the idol, but it’s too late. The secret is out.

Ralph acts like he was faking, but he didn’t count on having a five-star former federal agent sitting nearby. Phillip uses his razor-sharp fib-detecting skills to determine that Ralph does in fact have the idol.

Russell keeps the information exchange going, telling Phillip what the alliances are at Zapatera beach.

When it’s over, Russell drops his buff in the fire. He tells us that this will be his last time playing the game as he has nothing left to prove. Except…you know…that he can win the game.

Meanwhile back at Ometepe, Boston Rob welcomes an afternoon without Kristina and Double-0 Phillip. He proposes a game of Royal Treatment. The rules of Royal Treatment are never fully explained, but it seems to be some form of beach bocce-ball game where the winner gets whatever they want.

The tribe seems into it, so they set out for a relaxing day at the beach.

However, this was all a ruse so Boston Rob can get the tribe out of the way so he can look for the immunity idol. Boston Rob fakes having some…internal issues…and sneaks out to go idol huntin’.

Rob turns the forest upside-down looking for it. Eventually he finds it up in a tree.

Quick Aside: Wow, Royal Treatment?! A fake game to distract his tribe? Rob is playing this game on a different level.

Ironically, if Rob had won Royal Treatment, I bet he would have asked for Russell to be bounced from the game and to find an immunity idol.

Back at Zapatera, Sarita and Ralph are relaying the Redemption Island events to their tribe. Stephanie and Krista take offense to the way Sarita describes Russell’s exit.

Rule #4: You don’t have to defend someone once they’re out of the game.

Over at Ometepe, Phillip comes up with a plan to use the Zapatera info to improve his placement in the alliance. He shares this plan with Kristina and tells her he’ll try to work her into the alliance too.

Kristina rolls her eyes and responds, “You have experience in these covert matters, so whatever you think.” Wow, I didn’t know a sarcasm amplifier could go to eleven.

Phillip takes Rob and Grant aside and offers to spill the beans in exchange for adding Kristina to the alliance. Rob smartly realizes that this means that Phillip doesn’t feel secure with his place in the alliance.

Also, I did the math, if they add Kristina to the alliance, who are they aligning against? The crabs?

Immunity Challenge Time:
It’s relay time, baby! One member from each team will run across a balance beam onto the course. They’ll arrive at a crate. They’ll use a crowbar to pry open the crate and retrieve a shovel. They’ll then run back with the crowbar.

Running with tools? That seems dangerous.

The next member will run out and retrieve the shovel. They’ll dig in the ground to uncover an axe. The next member will use the axe to hack through a piece of wood and release two hand saws. Then two members will use the handsaws to cut through a wall of planks. Then, two other players will use the planks to complete a bridge puzzle. Once the bridge is completed, the entire tribe must cross the course (with the tools) and meet on a platform. Once they’re all on the platform, they’ll have to untie a hammer. When the hammer is untied, they’ll use it to drive in three nails that will break three tiles. First tribe to break all three of their tiles wins immunity, barbecue supplies, and food for a cookout.

Oh, and all of the tools are affordable, durable Sears Craftsman Tools.

Sears. Where It Begins.

Krista will sit out for Zapatera.

The relay starts off with Boston Rob and Rooster Ralph taking the lead for their teams. Ralph takes a slight lead for Zapatera, but Boston Rob is right behind him.

Julie and Grant are next out. They grab shovels and uncover the hatchets. Julie has a slight lead.

Ralph and Rob are out again. Ralph tears through the log with the hatchet. Boston Rob seems to be slowing down a bit.

Steve and Mike are out for Zapatera and go to work with the saws. Rob finally releases his team’s saws. Grant and Phillip rush out and start on the wall.

Mike and Steve make quick work of the planks while Phillip and Grant fall behind. Stephanie and Sarita are now on the course to put together the ramp. Rob and Kristina eventually join them. Zapatera finishes their ramp first with Ometepe slightly behind them.

Stephanie and Ashley go to work untying their hammers. Stephanie releases Zapatera’s hammer first. Ralph grabs the hammer and quickly drives the nails through the tiles. Zapatera wins immunity and reward.

OK, seriously? What’s with the tile hate this season?

During the celebration, Ralph stands on the table and unleashes his mighty rooster call.

Rule #5: The trademark move that your tribe loves is making the other tribe hate you.

Back at Zapatera, Mike wins the Overshare of the Week award letting us know that he’s been so hungry he hasn’t been thinking about sex.  Thanks, Mike.

Meanwhile, Ralph tells us that he enjoyed the barbecue so much that he’s been sucking his fingernails that haven’t been cleaned since the start of the show. I think it’s a pretty safe bet to say they weren’t that clean before the show.

Ralph even goes so far as to offer to lick some mustard off of Steve’s nose. So maybe Ralph doesn’t share Mike’s problem?

Over at Ometepe, Phillip holds his post-challenge round table. It literally looks like everyone wearing an orange buff wants to strangle him.

Some girl named Ashley tells us that Phillip is annoying and should go home. Who is this girl? An extra? Purple Ashley?

Natalie thinks it’s strange that Kristina isn’t scrambling looking for the idol. That’s actually an excellent point. Funny how this game evolves.

Rob realizes what Kristina is up to, and thinks she’s far more dangerous than Phillip. Rob even decides to split the votes so his alliance won’t think he has the idol. I’m telling you, Rob’s on a different level right now.

That night at Tribal Council, Natalie tells J-Pro that she thinks Kristina deserves a second chance.

Boston Rob disagrees, saying she hasn’t really been a part of the tribe.

Kristina thinks they should vote out the weakest link, meaning someone who is disruptive. She considers Phillip to be disruptive.

Phillip disagrees, saying he’s a doer and that Kristina only shows up around meal time.

Phillip then proceeds to give his entire life story.

Seriously, who do I talk to about getting a Coach vs. Phillip podcast? It’d be weeks long.

Voting Time: Phillip votes for Kristina, Kristian votes for Phillip, and you’ll know the rest soon enough.

Actually, you’ll know the rest now. One vote for Phillip, one vote for Kristina, one vote for Phillip, one vote for Kristina, one vote for Phillip, one vote for Kristina…and the fourth person to be sent to Redemption Island is…Kristina.

Verdict: I was worried that the show would peak too early if they booted a big name during Redemption Island, but Rob’s clever maneuvering and a healthy dose of Vitamin Phillip kept it on track.

Who’s Going to Win? For all of Rob’s great moves, the move to boot Matt may be the one that dooms him. If Ometepe keeps losing challenges they could be wiped out by the Zapatera Six post-merge. From there I like David to take it.

Power Rankings Update:
Close one this week with Sash getting the edge. Sash had Kristina in spot 15 while I had her in spot 14. Both of us thought Russell would prevail at Redemption Island, so no bonus points for either competitor. Sash still leads by a score of 38 to 34.

‘Survivor: Redemption Island’ Power Rankings: Round 3

March 8, 2011

The Rules: Each week, “Survivor: Nicaragua” finalist Matthew “Sash” Lenahan and XFINITY TV’s “Survivor” loudmouth Gordon Holmes will create separate power rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the two players will earn. For example, if Andrea is voted out this week, Sash will receive 11 points and Gordon will receive 12 points. Also, each player will pick who they think will win at Redemption Island. If they choose correctly they will receive a bonus point. At the end of the season, the person  with the most points will be named the “Survivor: Redemption Island” Power Rankings Challenge Champion.

Last Week: Both Sash and Gordon earned the Redemption Island bonus point by picking Matt, while Gordon had Russell in spot 14 and Sash had him in spot 9. Sash still leads by a score of 23 to 20.

TEAM SASH

Current Score: 23

.

TEAM GORDON

Current Score: 20

david . david
#1 David – David’s move to flow with the tribe’s consensus of throwing the challenge has kept him off everyone’s radar, but at some point he is going to have to make a bold move to win this game. . #1 David – Ding dong, the troll is dead. Well, for the time being. Last week’s move gives the Zapatera Six a strong foundation (as well as two more cannon fodder votes) that should get them to the merge. From there, David will have plenty of room to maneuver.
mike . mike
#2 Mike – Mike is David’s sidekick and is willing to allow others to make the decisions.  That mentality will get him to the end, but won’t win him the million. . #2 Mike – If you’ll notice, the Zapatera Six (I’m going to have to think of a better name) makes up the top six spots in this ranking. I have them all this high because I don’t see a reason for any of them to shake things up before the merge. I think they’re in it for the long haul.
natalie . julie
#3 Natalie – Natalie seems innocent enough to follow Boston Rob until he gets voted off and will easily find another boy to latch onto when needed.  Her lack of strategy will carry her far, just not far enough. . #3 Julie – If Russell and Stephanie went after Julie because she’s the low person on the totem pole, Julie did her best to show the members of her alliance that she deserves a higher slot.
ashley . ralph
#4 Ashley – Ashley is playing a great game, but will undoubtedly show her hand too soon as a physical and strategic player which will ultimately cause her demise. . #4 Ralph – Know this, if a grown man ever tried to wake me up with a rooster call, he’d end up with a coconut upside his head. That being said, he bested “Ressell” and he’s got an immunity idol, so he must be doing something right.
bostonrob . sarita
#5 Boston Rob – Boston Rob is playing harder than anyone else in this game and that’s tough to keep up for 39 days.  He is clearly the puppet master of his tribe but sooner or later someone has to catch on, right? . #5 Sarita – Still waiting to hear more from Sarita. Is she a mover and a shaker, or is she content to blend into the background?
grant . steve
#6 Grant – Grant has found himself in a great alliance with Boston Rob, Ashley, and Natalie but because of his strength he is also on the bottom of that pecking order and will suffer the consequences. . #6 Steve – Why is Steve at the bottom of the Zapatera Six? Because he lied to Russell about Francesca winning at Redemption Island. Granted, it worked out fine for him, but it was a worthless lie. It didn’t help his game, all it could have done was hurt it.
ralph . grant
#7 Ralph – Ralph is in a great position right now with his alliance, by providing at camp, and by holding onto the hidden immunity idol.  He claims he knows how to play this game, but I’ll have to see it to believe it. . #7 Grant – Grant is the safest person on Ometepe beach. Rob can’t afford to lose his only challenge monster. After the merge though? He’d better watch his back.
steve . ashley
#8 Steve – Throwing a challenge is always a bad idea, especially when you can win shelter in the form of a tarp, which aside from food and an idol is the next most important item you can possess in Nicaragua during the rainy season…trust me, I lived there.  I thought this guy was smarter. . #8 Ashley – Oh, Ashley. You’re fine. If Ometepe needs to lose someone for challenge strength, it’s Ashley or Natalie. If they want to lose someone who’s annoying, it’s Phillip. If they want to lose someone who’s a strategic threat, it’s Kristina.
sarita . bostonrob
#9 Sarita Sarita hasn’t made any bold moves and I don’t expect her to.  She is at the bottom of her alliance and should consider what Stephanie and Krista may offer before voting them out. . #9 Boston Rob – We’ll see how strong Boston Rob’s alliance is the next time Ometepe loses immunity. I’m still not sold on that Matt move and I wouldn’t put it past Ashley or Kristina to try to send the Robfather packing.
julie . natalie
#10 Julie – Julie played it safe by not voting with the Russell-Stephanie-Krista alliance, but playing it safe will never win “Survivor” and she looks to be headed down that path. . #10 Natalie – I want to say Natalie is super safe, but the fact remains that Ometepe is 0 and 2 in challenges that Zapatera is trying to win. That, and the other players may want to split her and Rob the way they split Andrea and Matt.
andrea . phillip
#11 Andrea – Andrea made a bold move by speaking up during the Matt-Francesca duel by letting Matt know that she didn’t vote for him.  Although she is in no immediate danger, that target on her back just got a lot bigger. . #11 Phillip – Has Phillip toned things down, or did we just not see much of him last week due to Ometepe winning the immunity challenge? His best bet is to settle down and become important to Rob.
krista . andrea
#12 Krista – Krista played into Russell’s hands and now finds herself only shielded by Stephanie.  I’m sure she had good intentions, but she should just enjoy the ride as her dismissal looms closer. . #12 Andrea – Andrea played Matt’s exit from the game perfectly. However, Rob will never fully trust her. Which is unfortunate, because Andrea hasn’t done anything to betray Rob’s trust.
phillip . krista
#13 Phillip – Phillip is getting on everyone’s nerves and although he’s a loyal servant to Boston Rob, sometimes your sanity on day 39 is more valuable than a million-dollar vote. . #13 Krista – Bad news: One third of Russell’s Angels was sent to Redemption Island. Good news: The other third of Russell’s Angels was ridiculously vocal in her defense of the team leader. Krista will be safe the next time Zapatera loses immunity, but will be next on the chopping block after that.
stephanie . kristina
#14 Stephanie – Stephanie has proven herself a better strategist than most of her tribemates but she also aligned with Russell which makes her next on the chopping block. . #14 Kristina – Kristina’s been living on borrowed time ever since the first Tribal Council. Rob has to know she’s too dangerous to keep around. Right now her only hope to get something started is to sway Andrea or find another immunity idol.
kristina . stephanie
#15 Kristina – With no immunity idol, Kristina is now defenseless against Boston Rob and his cronies.  She needs to disrupt the tribe dynamic to place the focus on someone else and Phillip is the biggest target out there. . #15 Stephanie – Russell’s Angels must’ve been convinced they had Julie last week. Otherwise, why would Stephanie have been so insulting at Tribal Council? I’m sure her tirade wasn’t forgotten, she’ll be an easy next vote.
russell . russell
Redemption Island Winner – Russell’s newest tattoo will “keep hope alive” for this Good vs. Evil duel by making Matt wish he stayed home in Nashville.  Evil will prevail. . Redemption Island Winner – I wouldn’t call myself a Russell fan, but I think the show is more interesting with him around. Go Russell.

‘Survivor’ Castaway Interview: Francesca Hogi

March 3, 2011

People have been voted out of “Survivor” for beef jerky smuggling, banana theft, and being unlucky…but this season was the first time someone’s first sentence doomed them.

“They’re sizing us up like we’re prey.”

Those were the first seven words Francesca Hogi ever said to ‘Boston’ Rob Mariano and those seven words were enough for him to send her to Redemption Island.

I had a chance to chat with Francesca the morning after her elimination to get her thoughts on her relationship with Boston Rob, what life was like on Redemption Island, and Jeff Probst’s rapping skills.

Gordon Holmes: Good morning, Francesca.
Francesca Hogi:
Good morning!
Gordon: Did I pronounce your name correctly?
Francesca: (Laughs) That was perfect.
Gordon: That wasn’t so hard.

Gordon: So, you were the first person ever sent to Redemption Island. What was that like?
Francesca:
It was kind of tough. You’re the only person who has to do everything. Everyday collecting firewood to keep the fire going, that took all my energy. The shelter that was there was not much of a shelter. The first night I got there I had to make a bed and try to improve on the roof to give myself protection from the rain.
Gordon: Was the isolation a tough part?
Francesca: It didn’t bother me so much. I was very anxious because I didn’t know how soon someone was coming. I didn’t know if somebody was going to arrive and we were going to have a duel right away. I was afraid it was going to be Phillip and Phillip and I were going to be stuck there for a couple of days which would have been a disaster. Probably good television, but not good for me.
Gordon: What happened once Matt arrived?
Francesca: He and I were there together for a couple of days, and it was a couple of days of us wondering, “When is this duel going to happen?” We were eager to get going.

Gordon: You mentioned your buddy Phillip, he’s your B.F.F. right?
Francesca:
People keep asking me if he’s really like that, and I’m not a mental health professional, but what you see from Phillip is what you get from Phillip. I don’t hate Phillip or anything like that, but I certainly don’t like Phillip. I don’t enjoy being around him. The thing I do wonder about Phillip is if he cries every time he sees that question mark that CBS puts after “Former Federal Agent” because they’re insulting his integrity.
Gordon: Did you find it odd that a man with such finely tuned powers of perception didn’t realize he was sitting on an immunity idol clue?
Francesca: That was pretty funny. I guess anyone could miss that clue.

Gordon: Why was Kristina so determined to make the big move to vote Boston Rob out early in the game. You seemed to think it was better to wait.
Francesca:
I definitely thought it was too soon. I think Kristina was excited to be there and she found that idol and she thought it was her opportunity to make her mark. I think she got carried away. She got carried away enough to tell Phillip about the immunity idol which she knew was a bad idea. There was no talking her out of it.

Gordon: Rob said he targeted you based on what you said at the very beginning of the game. And, he targeted Matt for shaking hands with Zapatera. Is he super paranoid out there?
Francesca:
Boston Rob is obviously a great player and he’s a really smart guy. I think whatever I said on the beach made him distrust me. Which is unfortunate because it isn’t how I meant it. I would have been happy to align with Rob. If I could turn back time I wouldn’t have made that comment because it obviously started me off on the wrong foot in the game.
Gordon: And Matt?
Francesca: I was shocked that he voted Matt out, but I think that had less to do with the handshake and more to do with his relationship with Andrea.

Gordon: Alright, first word association of the new season. I’ll give you a name, you give me the first words that pop into your head. Let’s start off with…Andrea.
Francesca:
I call Andrea, “Dr. Dre.”
Gordon: Now does that make you Ed Lover or Snoop Dogg?
Francesca: (Laughs) Um…I’m going to choose Snoop Dogg.
Gordon: Smart choice. Matt?
Francesca: Sunny.
Gordon: Kristina?
Francesca: Determined.
Gordon: Boston Rob?
Francesca: (Laughs) Determined.
Gordon: (Laughs) Ashley?
Francesca: Complacent.
Gordon: Natalie?
Francesca: Natalie…”Survivor” mistress.
Gordon: Ooo…  OK, Grant?
Francesca: Stoic.
Gordon: Russell’s weird arm pimples?
Francesca: Oh… Russell’s weird arm pimples are extremely unfortunate.
Gordon: Also extremely unfortunate…me owning an HDTV last night.
Francesca: Once you see that you can never unsee it.
Gordon: OK, let’s finish this off with Federal Agent Phillip.
Francesca: I’m just going to say…unstable. That’s the kindest thing I can say about Phillip.

Gordon: What did you take from your time in Nicaragua?
Francesca:
I’m probably more obnoxious than I realized. (Laughs) Things didn’t turn out the way I planned, but I was true to myself. If I could have been more insincere I probably would have done better in the game. That’s unfortunate for “Survivor” but makes me feel good about my life.

Gordon: Now, Jeff Probst had said on his website (jeffprobst.com) that before the game started he busted out a boombox and played Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” for the cast.
Francesca:
Yes, he did.
Gordon: What was that like?
Francesca: It was very strange. The game hadn’t begun yet, so none of us had spoken a word to each other. He gathered us all around and he said, “Guys, I’ve never done this before, but I woke up this morning with such a good feeling about this season.” And he was inspired to play this song for us. And he printed out the words and we all had a little party moment before the game began.
Gordon: Did he actually rap along with it?
Francesca: He did.
Gordon: I am sooooo jealous.
Francesca: (Laughs) He was excited.

‘Survivor: Redemption Island’ Recap: Rooster Vs. Russell

March 2, 2011

Last Week: Phillips showed that he’s half lion, Russell returned to form with some solid lying, and Matt’s hand shaking crossed the line.

39 Days, 18 People, 1 “Survivor” Blog

Let’s take a look at the tribes as they currently stand…

The Ometepe Tribe (wearing orange)

Andrea – 21, Student
Ashley – 25, Nurse
Grant – 29, Yoga Instructor
Kristina – 46, Law Student
Natalie – 19, Dancer
Phillip – 52, Technology Executive

Rob – 35, “Survivor” Hall of Famer

The Zapatera Tribe (wearing purple)

David – 31, Defense Attorney
Julie – 50, Firefighter
Krista – 25, Pharmaceutical Rep
Mike – 31, Former Marine
Ralph – 45, Farmer

Russell – 38, “Survivor” Hall of Famer

Sarita – 36, Visual Effects Producer
Stephanie – 26, Waitress
Steve – 51, Former NFL Player

Currently Residing on Redemption Island (wearing sadness)

Francesca – 36, Attorney

Matt – 22, Pre-Med Student

We kick this bad boy off by paying a visit to Redemption Island. Francesca is shocked that Matt is joining her. Apparently she was anticipating (dreading?) a visit from Phillip.

Meanwhile at Ometepe, Rob is bragging about how Matt went home, Kristina played her idol, and Phillip was loyal. A perfect hat trick for ol’ Beantown Rob.

Phillip decides that his performance is worth an Academy Award. Just so long as he doesn’t try to thank Francesca during his acceptance speech. The mispronunciations could make the broadcast go long…well, longer than usual.

The following morning Matt and Francesca receive an invitation to…Redemption Island Arena! It’s Thunderdome! Two enter…only one leaves! Whatcha gonna do, brother?!

Over at Zapatera, the Zapaterans pull rocks to see who gets to watch the duel. Steve and Danny score some front row seats. At Ometepe, Andrea and Ashley receive the honor. This concerns Rob as he doesn’t want Andrea chatting with her buddy Matt.

Redemption Island Challenge: The two competitors are trapped behind a gate. They’ll have to tie sticks together to create a pole long enough to reach through the gate and retrieve three keys. The three keys unlock three locks. First person to unlock all of their locks stays on Redemption Island. The loser goes home.

Note: Redemption Island Arena is very cool. It reminds me of “Survivor: Guatemala.”

Francesca gets a decent pole together first and retrieves her first key. Matt gives his pole a shot and it falls apart. Francesca snags her second key while Matt continues having trouble with his pole.

Grow up.

(I know that’s an old joke.)

While Francesca is reaching for her third key, her pole snaps. Matt manages to snag his first two keys while Francesca is repairing her pole. They both stretch for their third key with Matt finally managing to retrieve it. He unlocks his locks and wins the challenge, sending Francesca home.

Wow, that was a very tense challenge. Well done.

With the challenge over, Matt hugs Francesca. Wait, didn’t he learn anything?!

Francesca drops her buff into the fire (Randy Bailey style!) and leaves the game.

Back at camp, Rob realizes that he needs to get Andrea back on his side. He pulls her aside and has a heart-to-heart. However, instead of explaining his rationale, he tries to disperse the blame between the rest of the alliance.

Andrea smartly plays it cool, but realizes she’s the low person on the totem pole.

Over at Zapatera, Steve tells Russell that Francesca won the challenge. Why? So when they vote Russell off he’ll have to face Matt.

Wha-what? If he’s going to face Matt either way, what difference does it make? What if Zapatera wins immunity and Russell gets to go to the next Redemption Island duel? Why lie to somebody when there’s next to no upside?

Russell knows he’s down six to three and the immunity idol is his only hope. However, since Rooster Ralph has it, his alliance can’t find it.

Stephanie comes up with the idea of pretending to have an immunity idol (Rupert Boneham style!)

We come back from commercial and are treated to close-ups of the pustules on Russell’s shaved armpits in HD. Thanks, CBS.

Perhaps sick of Russell’s puss-filled armpits (urgh…it grossed me out to even type that), Steve gets the idea of throwing the challenge to hasten Russell’s exit. Somebody named Julie doesn’t like that idea because she’s a competitor.

Immunity Challenge Time: Three players from each team will be strapped to a wheel. As the wheel rotates, their heads will dip into a trough. They’ll have to fill their mouths with water while they’re underwater. As they rotate to the top, they’ll spit the water into a tube. Once the tube is filled up with water a ball will roll down to a slide puzzle. First tribe to get the ball through the slide puzzle wins immunity, chairs, blankets, a tarp, and other comfort items.

Note: They had a very similar challenge last season and if memory serves me right, I called it the grossest challenge ever. That water has got to be nasty after people dunk their gross heads into it.

Ralph and Sarita will sit out for Zapatera.

Natalie, Andrea, and Kristina have wheel duty for Ometepe, Stephanie, Krista, and Julie are strapped in for Zapatera.

Ometepe jumps out to a big lead. It looks like Julie is intentionally missing the tube.

Ometepe releases their ball quickly and Rob is going to work on the puzzle. Zapatera finally releases their ball and David goes to work…slowly. Rob finishes the puzzle and wins immunity and reward for Ometepe.

Russell suspects that strange things were afoot at the Circle K. (Two “Survivor” points for whoever gets that reference. “Survivor” points, as always, have no cash value.)

The Ometepans don’t get a second to enjoy their win as they’re all tearing apart camp looking for the hidden immunity idol.

Rob notices that federal agent Phillip is sitting on the clue because he was sitting kind of funny. Did Phillip the man with the perception powers ten times that of a normal man realize he was sitting on the clue? No. Did Rob manage to get the clue away from Phillip without him knowing? Totally.

However, the clue is very vague and Rob can’t find the idol. Maybe he’d have better luck if he was a rock collector?

Meanwhile, the plan at Zapatera is to split the vote between Russell and Stephanie in case they have the idol.

Stephanie and Russell decide that some lady named Julie is their best bet for flipping. Russell smartly has Stephanie approach her with an offer to be their fourth member.

Wow…and Julie seems to go for it.

That night at Tribal Council, Ralph says there’s a division in the tribe in his own unique way. Probst may need a Rooster-Ralph-to-English dictionary.

Sarita calls Russell out on giving a speech about being a changed man when his gameplay shows the opposite.

Russell disagrees, saying he’s not burning socks and throwing challenges. He then accuses the others of throwing the challenge.

Mike fesses up that they weren’t too upset about losing.

Julie thinks they need to go into the merge with numbers.

Stephanie thinks throwing the challenge was stupid as they need numbers now and can all stab each other in the back later.

Voting Time: Ralph votes for “Ressell,” Sarita votes for Stephanie, Russell votes for Ralph, and the rest of the votes await J-Pro’s thoughtful tallying.

One vote for Russell, one vote for Ralph, one vote for Stephanie, two votes for Russell, one vote for Stephanie, two votes for Ralph, and the final vote is for Stephanie. Three-way tie.

Now they can only vote for Russell, Stephanie, or Ralph. Also, Russell, Stephanie, and Ralph are not allowed to vote.

More Voting: No votes are shown…

One vote Ralph, three votes Russell…and the third person to be sent to Redemption Island is…Russell.

Hantz on the ground…Hantz on the ground…

And the longest run in “Survivor” without being voted out has just come to an end. At least until Sandra or Parvati come back. (EDIT: Amanda Kimmel actually has the longest uninterrupted run in “Survivor” history. Thanks to my Twitter and Facebook fact checkers for pointing that out.)

Verdict: My big question going into this season was; will eliminating someone midway through the show alter the show’s natural flow? For twenty one seasons almost every episode has peaked with an elimination at the end. I think it worked in this episode, but if Russell goes home next week it might overshadow everything that happens afterward.

Either way, I’m still loving this season.

Who’s Going to Win?
Andrea’s a smart cookie. She played the Boston Rob situation just right. David’s still a strong pick too.

Power Rankings Update: Back in the game! Both Sash and I earned the Redemption Island bonus point by picking Matt, while I had Russell in spot 14 and Sash had him in spot 9. However, Sash still leads by a score of 23 to 20.

Spoilers and Those Who Spoil

March 2, 2011

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read this blog if you don’t want to know about the ending of “Short Circuit.”

I will never…ever forgive Ryan Davis.

The date: August 14, 1986

The place: The dollar theater in Manchester, Missouri.

The movie: “Short Circuit”

I’m notorious for having a terrible memory, but I will never forget my tenth birthday. I was seated in a movie theater, surrounded by several of my friends enjoying the hilarious robotic antics of Johnny 5. Toward the end of the movie we were led to believe that our new robot friend had been blown to bits (or “disassembled” as he would charmingly yelp). I was mortified.

‘Survivor: Redemption Island’ Power Rankings: Week 2

March 1, 2011

The Rules: Each week our two combatants will create separate power rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the two players will earn. For example, if Andrea is voted out this week, Sash will receive 12 points and Gordon will receive 13 points. Also, each player will pick who they think will win at Redemption Island. If they choose correctly they will receive a bonus point. At the end of the season, the person  with the most points will be named the “Survivor: Redemption Island” Power Rankings Challenge Champion.

Last Week: Sash showed his Power Rankings prowess, jumping out to an impressive eight-point lead. Sash had Matt in spot 13, while Gordon had him in spot 5.

TEAM SASH

Current Score: 13

.

TEAM GORDON

Current Score: 5

david . grant
#1 David – Sitting David out of the challenge was smart, because absolutely nothing about the last challenge was smart.  If he continues to stay off Russell’s “hit list”, he will cruise to the merge and to the end. . #1 Grant – Leaping long pools in a single bound! In a stage of the game where Ometepe is down by two people and they just booted one of their young bucks, Boston Rob can’t afford to lose Grant. He’s safe until at least the merge.
mike . david
#2 Mike – Mike is playing a great game and is aware of both alliances in camp.  By keeping his options open to both sides of the Russell-Ralph divide, he can continue winning challenges for his tribe while allowing others to strategically shoot themselves in the foot. . #2 David – David’s shining moment last episode took place around the ol’ waterin’ hole. While Ralph and Russell got into it, he just stood back and observed. Smart guy. If he gets to the merge with numbers you could be looking at the next sole survivor.
natalie . ashley
#3 Natalie – She’s young and is willing to go with the flow.  This lack of strategic game play will carry her far, but Boston Rob’s pawn won’t know what to do when the King has been captured. . #3 Ashley – I’m in the camp that thinks voting out Matt was a big mistake. Boston Rob’s happy lil’ alliance is now splintered. Fortunately for Ashley nobody will be gunning for her when it comes time to vote out the next Ometepian.
bostonrob . steve
#4 Boston Rob – “Things went pretty much according to plan…seems as though this group of players knows how to follow directions.”  Rob is making all the right moves, but how long can he rely on this freshman class to avoid making a fatal mistake? . #4 Steve – Chalk Steve up as one of the people who is playing the Zapatera drama perfectly. Let Russell and Ralph have it out, then decide what to do with the victorious party.
phillip . julie
#5 Phillip – Phillip’s speech back at camp after losing the immunity challenge reminded me of Colby’s in Heroes vs. Villains in that they both accepted their fate and dismissal from the tribe.  Did anyone ever expect those names to be mentioned in the same sentence?  This Special Agent is cluelessly making all the right moves and I’m impressed.  Will his luck ever run out? . #5 Julie – I’m putting Julie and Steve in the same category. Just keep your head down during the drama and you’ll be in a good spot once the dust has settled.
ashley . natalie
#6 Ashley – Ashley is proving she can be a physical competitor, but showing your hand too quickly in this game is the ultimate sin. . #6 Natalie – Being Amber 2.0 has its benefits. Most importantly, Boston Rob will be the one taking all the bullets. The downside? If they turn on Rob, they can’t afford to boot him just yet (from a challenge standpoint) which puts a target on her back.
steve . mike
#7 Steve – His quarterback skills will help him see plays far down the field, but his strength and wisdom will be feared by all.  Anyone who allows him to taste breakfast on day 39 will be sorry they did. . #7 Mike I’m not quite sold on you, Mike. You seem like a good guy, but I worry that you don’t know when to keep your mouth shut. You’re gonna be in enough trouble post-merge because of your athletic prowess, saying something at the wrong time could make it worse.
krista . krista
#8 Krista – As Russell’s replacement for Stephanie, she’ll find it difficult to emerge unscathed from his train wreck of mistakes. . #8 Andrea – Being the second girl in Russell’s alliance is never a great spot to be in, but, she should be safe for a while. They always gunned for Parvati instead of Danielle, right?
russell . phillip
#9 Russell “You’re either with me or against me.”  Haven’t we heard that one before?  The only problem for Russell is that this time everyone knows his game, and he’s executing it for the third time flawlessly.  Can this guy be any more predictable? . #9 Phillip – Phillip survived?! And now Boston Rob kinda trusts him?! Happy day! Now, let’s hope Phillip tones down his super annoying tendencies so he can stick around longer. Good news for me, bad news for crabs.
julie . stephanie
#10 Julie – If Julie’s smart she’ll cling to the alliance that has the numbers, but Julie may be the next Shambo in Russell’s eyes…that means disposable.  Hey Julie! Don’t fall for it! . #10 Stephanie – I’ll give Stephanie credit, she knows she’s going all in with her alliance with Russell. Maybe it’s safer to hedge your bets, but if Russell trusts you now, he’ll do everything in his hobbity powers to take you to the end.
grant . bostonrob
#11 Grant – Grant’s a great competitor and his tribe would be crazy to send him packing any time soon; however, Boston Rob isn’t in the shape he once was and Grant would be his biggest threat when the individual game begins to win challenges.  Look for Rob to pull a 180 on Grant pre-merge. . #11 Boston Rob – OK…the more time I’ve had to think about the Matt move, the more I hate it. Do Grant and Ashley trust Boston Rob that much? And even if they do, he just gave them a BIG reason not to. Unnecessary drama, too soon into the game.
andrea . sarita
#12 Andrea – I still have high hopes for my Wisconsin homegirl, but it doesn’t take a genius to know how powerful a couple can be in this game and severing the Matt-Andrea alliance was crucial to Boston Rob maintaining his control.  If Andrea holds a grudge against Rob and the rest of Ometepe, she’ll need to keep it to herself until the merge…let’s just hope she can hold out that long. . #12 Sarita – Ralph hates Russell, Russell hates Ralph. The only other member of Zapatera that has any heat on them? Sarita. She didn’t do so well in last week’s challenge, but hopefully the fact that it was a challenge they won will help her out a bit.
ralph . andrea
#13 Ralph – Oftentimes wielding the power of an immunity idol is more powerful than actually playing an immunity idol.  Although Ralph looks to be in comfortable shape now, any savvy “Survivor” player should know that trouble is near when you begin to feel too comfortable.  Perhaps “savvy” isn’t in Ralph’s vocabulary just yet and he should continue on collecting rocks for fun and staying out of trouble. . #13 Andrea – How attached were you to Matt? Enough to earn a ticket to Redemption Island? If you’re serious about making it to the end, you’d better kiss and make-up with Rob quick. If you’re still mad a few eliminations from now, then you can pull some strings to try to boot Rob. However, now is not the time.
stephanie . russell
#14 Stephanie – Stephanie has the street smarts that many “Survivor” players lack, but she’s completely allowed herself to be Russell’s puppet and a huge target.  Maybe if her name was Natalie I’d have higher hopes, but it’s not and I don’t. . #14 Russell – I don’t know what to say about Russell. He’s going up against a guy who has numbers, an idol and a rooster call. Surely that’s reason enough to put Russell at the bottom of this list. But people have gone broke betting against Mr. Hantz…
kristina . kristina
#15 Kristina – Kristina now finds herself with no alliance and no idol.  She needs to find a crack in Boston Rob’s alliance or stir up some trouble quickly if she plans to make it to the merge. . #15 Kristina – Even though your head wasn’t on the chopping block last week, there was no way of knowing it. So, playing the idol was a smart move. Rob’s next move is probably bringing his crew back together and that means voting out an outsider. Thanks for playing.
sarita . ralph
#16 Sarita – It’s obvious that Russell has no interest in making Sarita one of his groupies, and without a strong alliance on either side, this rookie hasn’t developed the skills needed to be a swing vote. . #16 Ralph – What benefit was there to confronting Russell about the clue? All it did was put a target on Ralph’s well-insulated back. I like Ralph, he seems fun, but I question his ability to make a serious run in this game.
matt . matt
Redemption Island Winner – Matt will take the win, but he won’t last there long. . Redemption Island Winner I’m giving Matt the slight edge in this week’s Redemption Island challenge. I’ve got to imagine that the alone time, building your own shelter, etc was tough on Francesca.
