Sandra Diaz-Twine’s 2016 Hall of Fame Ballot

Tony Vlachos – (“Survivor: Cagayan”): Tony is a tough dominant player. He’s very aggressive and good at controlling other players. But, Tony has a soft side and he’s fun. I truly believe he is one of the best players to ever win.

Malcolm Freberg – (“Survivor: Philippines” and “Survivor: Caramoan”): Malcolm gets mad respect for playing back to back, that is not an easy task. Not only is he extremely handsome but he’s also a strategic and physical player.  Malcolm has strong social skills. Everyone loves Malcolm and he’s a beautiful soul.

Denise Stapley – (“Survivor: Philippines”): Denise went to every single Tribal Council and still won!  That’s what you call having a perfect social game, where Tribal Council doesn’t scare you no matter how many times you go.  Denise’s strong work ethic was a plus. Denise, although very small in stature, was very big on strength and loyalty

‘Boston’ Rob Mariano’s 2016 Hall of Fame Ballot

Stephenie LaGrossa – (“Survivor: Palau”, “Survivor: Guatemala,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): One tough East Coast chick from Philadelphia and a bad ass “Survivor” player. Maybe one of the most physical girls to ever play and mentally so tough…she got down to only herself on her tribe! How is she not already in?

Tyson Apostol – (“Survivor: Tocantins,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): Despite some “Questionable” gameplay in “Heroes vs Villains”…ugh hmmm… Tyson was a player that got better each time he played. He learned from his mistakes and ultimately won! His sense of humor is pretty okay too once you get to know him! Lollollol!

Joe Anglim – (“Survivor: Worlds Apart” and “Survivor: Second Chance”): As far as I can remember he is the only player I actually ever watched from my living room and started yelling at the TV cause I wanted him to win! Outside of the game he has always been a stand-up guy from the times we have hung out. And, my kids have a crush on him like everyone else!

Gordon Holmes: The fans, production, the press, your peers…everyone came together to honor you with this induction into the “Survivor” Hall of Fame. Congratulations on being recognized as one of the greatest of all time.
Rudy Boesch:
I don’t feel like one of the all-time best players but it is very nice to be remembered.

Holmes: You certainly are. Does it feel odd that this little adventure you went on fifteen years ago is still so fondly regarded?
Boesch:
I’m not surprised that “Survivor” is still on after fifteen years because it is still a really good show.

Holmes: Are you still watching?
Boesch:
I do still watch “Survivor” but I normally fall asleep before it is over!

Holmes: (Laughs) Yeah…me too on some seasons. It’s pretty cool to have your former tribemate Kelly Wiglesworth giving it a second go.
Boesch:
I always liked Kelly. Good for her to be able to try it a second time.

What the fans said about Rudy…

“Richard Hatch quit an immunity challenge because he knew he couldn’t beat Rudy in front of the jury.” – Donna

“A player who captivated everyone watching the first season, and ensured the popularity of “Survivor,” allowing many more seasons to come.” – Muntaqim

“I think people forget how big of a celebrity Rudy became after Borneo aired.’” – Colleen

What the Executive Voting Committee said about Rudy…

“If you need a reason to induct Rudy Boesch into the “Survivor” Hall of Fame you are not a true fan.  He’s a legend.” – Executive Producer and Host Jeff Probst

“When the tribe was scrambling to make a shelter to sleep above the flea-infested beach and find water to boil and drink in order to survive the elements, the oldest contestant ever, Rudy, dug a 6-foot trench in the beach, lined it with palm leaves, and slept in it. Then he proceeded to drink the unfiltered, un-boiled water from a tiny stream. ‘I used to drink water with dead bodies floating in it…this stuff is fine.’” – Ethan Zohn

“Rudy is as synonymous with Survivor’ as almost anyone, the franchise’s original fan-favorite, the elder statesman of the series. Respect where it’s due.” – Josh Wigler – Parade

Monday, Jerri Manthey joined the Class of 2015…

And now, the “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to induct Benjamin “Coach” Wade as the second member of the Class of 2015.

We had a chance to speak with the newly crowned Hall of Famer to get his thoughts on this honor…

Gordon Holmes: The fans, production, the press, your peers…everyone came together to honor you. How does it feel to be considered one of the greatest players in the game’s history?
Benjamin “Coach” Wade: Well I would say that I am not one of the greatest players in history…one of the biggest characters? Yes. One of the most controversial? Yes. But hey, three times and I still haven’t figured out how to win, just not in the cards.

Holmes: What’s this we hear about you not coaching anymore? What are we supposed to call you?
Wade: (Laughs) Well I am trying to retire from college coaching, for the sake of my family…however there is a professional team that is after me and I have already turned down other college jobs in the past few weeks. Coach will always be coach, and of course I will always be involved with coaching club soccer in my hometown of Susanville.

Holmes: Have you been watching “Survivor: Second Chance”? If so, what are you hoping to see in Wednesday’s finale?
Wade: Is that even a question?! Once a fan, always a fan. This has been a very unpredictable season, which now I see as I am finally learning about the game, is the most enjoyable for the fans. I thought Ciera was going to win, then I thought Joe was going to. I can’t imagine what’s going to happen and that’s the best part.

Holmes: What are your thoughts on Stephen’s time in the game?
Wade: The Wizard’s biggest challenge going into the game was being able to contribute in challenges, excel at the social game, and not be someone’s doormat. He exceeded in all of those things, so I am very proud of him. I wanted him to go all the way and win it. It’s always an honor to go out if you are a threat like Joe physically or strategically like Stephen, so I am all around chuffed that he did what he did.

Holmes: Finally, since they’re giving out Second Chances, any way you’d accept a fourth?
Wade: I’m retired. (Laughs) But, just like with soccer coaching #NeverSayNever.

What the fans said about Coach…

“I still think Coach could’ve won ‘South Pacific’ if he’d done a little better at the final Tribal.” – Annette

“I’ll talk to my parents who haven’t watched ‘Survivor’ in 10 years and they know who Coach is. My roommates, who get annoyed with my obsession with ‘Survivor,’ know who Coach is and they haven’t seen a single episode. He is one of the most iconic people to ever play the game of ‘Survivor’ and he needs to be inducted. ” – Zach

“The sensitive slayer is one of the greatest characters in the show’s history. Induct him!” – Kim

What the Executive Voting Committee said about Coach…

“In my eyes Coach had a great human development over his three seasons, a huge loving personality, and gave us a never ending supply of great entertainment.” – Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer

“You can’t have a  Hall without one of the most entertaining players in history! I learned a lot from the Dragon Slayer before I played season 19!” – Russell Hantz

“He rose to the occasion his third time around, becoming a father figure to his flock and securing a spot in the final three. Sadly, Coach missed out on winning the game, but he still wins at life.” – Parvati Shallow

The Class of 2013 included Kim Spradlin, John Cochran, and Jonny Fairplay…

And now, the “Survivor” Hall of Fame is proud to induct Jerri Manthey as the first member of the Class of 2015. Jerri received the most fan votes out of any nominee and had the highest percentage of total votes.

We had a chance to speak with the newly crowned Hall of Famer to get her thoughts on this honor…

Gordon Holmes: Induction into the “Survivor” Hall of Fame is a cumulative vote that includes fans, production, the press, your peers…everyone came together to honor you. How does it feel to receive recognition from such a wide variety of people?
Jerri Manthey: I am honored and proud to be a part of “Survivor” history. I feel extra fortunate to have been a part of the beginnings of it. Lots has changed since I played in Australia…Including ME as a human being. I’ve grown, I’ve overcome a lot of challenges in life that would normally break a person. I’ve become more patient with people, I’ve become more gracious and appreciative. “Survivor” has without a doubt changed my life for the better. It’s taught me that I can handle some incredibly difficult situations with ease and a very clear perspective of the “bubble” each of us lives in and the necessity to step outside of it often.

Holmes: Your relationship with the fans was a strained one before “Heroes vs. Villains.” What does it mean to you that you were by far the top vote getter in this year’s fan ballot?
Manthey: Strained?? Hmmm…I’m not sure that’s the correct term.  I like to think that my relationship with the fans has been evolving… very… slowly…

Manthey: When I played the first time, I was thirty years old. I was ambitious and aggressive and paid very little attention to the reaction of the people around me. Much like today’s “millennial” generation, I didn’t think about whose toes I was stepping on to get ahead. I saw a goal and went for it without much thought. I admit it’s no way to win a million dollars, but I did get ahead in my life…much to the detriment of the relationships of those I cared deeply for.

Manthey: But now…I’ve learned that as a woman, I am automatically grouped into the category of “weaker sex” and I am NOT okay with it. But, I am much more diplomatic at dealing with stereotypes. I feel I have less to prove to others and more to prove to myself. I hope to be an example to other women and young girls that as women we can accomplish just as much – if not more – than a man.

Manthey: I don’t rely on popularity contests to stroke my ego and make me feel validated.  I look in the mirror… And if I’m making choices that make me feel good, make others feel good… And make my parents proud… That’s all I care about. However, I’m BEYOND grateful for the love of the fans of “Survivor.” And I am constantly amazed people still remember me and care what I’m up to. And all I can really say is “thank you” for all the love!  It means a lot to me.

Holmes: Have you been watching “Survivor: Second Chance”? If so, what are you hoping to see in Wednesday’s finale?
Manthey: To be honest, I am a few episodes behind and have to catch up this week. Somehow I have been able to avoid hearing anything that has happened on the last couple episodes. And I can’t wait to have a mini marathon with my friends right before the finale. Life has become my own game of “Survivor” as I battle through a very difficult divorce and am learning every day how important the choices you make in life are. Much like the game of “Survivor,” divorce does NOT bring out the best in people. And right now I am fighting to keep all that I have worked (and starved and suffered) so hard for from slipping into the hands of someone I once loved who now is trying to take it all away.
Holmes: I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through that.
Manthey: I keep praying every day that he will wake up and realize that the outcome is never worth the battle. That people fall out of love for many different reasons. But if handled well, a friendship is possible and in the long term, isn’t that all that really matters?  And while I answer your question, I realize once again how life and “Survivor” are so similar. Crazy…right?
Holmes: I always hope there can be friendship after a relationship ends. Sometimes it just takes time.

Holmes: What are your thoughts on Kimmi and Jeff Varner’s time out there?
Manthey: I campaigned like I’ve never done before to get Kimmi and Jeff on “Second Chances.” Jeff played a little too aggressively for his own good… But because I know him so well…and know how badly he wanted to get another shot…I understood why. Kimmi has played a very “under the radar” game… and I know she has gone through some rough life lessons herself and has struggled to put food on the table and support her children…and (without knowing what is happening on the show right now with her) I hope she kicks some ass and wins the million! I am so proud to have had them both represent the Australian season!  Still the most watched season EVER!!!

Holmes: Finally, since they’re giving out Second Chances, any way you’d accept a fourth?
Manthey: Absolutely. There aren’t many of us in the “four-time players” club. I’d be honored. Truly!

What the fans said about Jerri…

“She’s a ‘Survivo’ legend and is hands down the most iconic female villain in the show’s history.” – Ramsey

“In ‘Heroes vs. Villains,’ had she made the Final Tribal she could have been joining her Australian castaways Amber and Tina as a Sole Survivor.” – John

“I loved watching Jerri in ‘Heroes vs. Villains.’ She played her own game and was an immunity win away from taking the whole thing.” – Tricia

What the Executive Voting Committee said about Jerri…

“What makes Jerri truly special is her three-season arc.  Who else in ‘Survivor’ history has gone from literally being booed offstage to, in her last season, emerging as America’s sweetheart?  Nobody, that’s who!” – John Cochran

“While tame by modern standards, Jerri’s ‘treachery’ made her a transcendent figure in the medium and changed the way all reality shows are cast. ” – Rob Cesternino

“She was “Survivor’s” first – and best – villainess. From the moment she accused Kel of smuggling beef jerky, Jerri became the most hated woman in America, a role that she parlayed into 15 years of television appearances.” – Steve Helling – People Magazine

‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame 2015 Ballot – XFINITY TV’s Gordon Holmes

December 14, 2015

XFINITY TV's Gordon Holmes (XFINITY)

NOTE: Voting for the 2015 “Survivor” Hall of Fame has ended. Be sure to check back Monday afternoon to meet the first new member of the Class of 2015.

ANOTHER NOTE: XFINITY TV is the place to go for “Survivor: Second Chance” coverage. We’ll have Power Rankings with “Worlds Apart” faves Jenn Brown and Max Dawson, every Wednesday evening we’ll bring you a recap of the most recent episode, and every Thursday you’ll be able to watch the previous night’s episode and read an interview with the eliminated contestant. Be sure to follow me on Twitter (@gordonholmes) for immediate updates.

As the Senior Chairman of the Executive Voting Committee, Gordon Holmes has an awesome responsibility. His vote (along with Host Jeff Probst, Challenge Producer John Kirhoffer and other “Survivor” luminaries) will make up 50% of the final tally for entry into the prestigious ‘Survivor’ Hall of Fame. The other 50% came from “Survivor” fans like you.

Gordon Holmes is a Managing Producer at Comcast and the lead “Survivor” guy for XFINITY TV. He’s been hooked on “Survivor” from the moment he first saw Jeff Probst kick sixteen strangers off a boat and into the sea back in May of 2000. Gordon has visited the set of “Survivor” on seven separate occasions (“Gabon,” “Nicaragua,” “South Pacific,”  “Philippines,” “Blood vs. Water,” “Worlds Apart,” and “Second Chance”) and boasts an Ozzy-esque 8-1 immunity challenge record. He also ranks second behind Michael Skupin when it comes to injuries incurred in the Philippines.

Gordon Holmes’s 2015 Hall of Fame Ballot

Rudy Boesch – (“Survivor: Borneo” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): I said it last year, and I’ll say it again; some people vote for personalities, some people vote for season domination, I vote for icons.

And Rudy Boesch is an icon.

If you’ve never seen “Survivor: Borneo,” give it a watch. For those of you who have, it’s weird right? It’s almost like a documentary. Jeff Probst is providing weird narration. “Alliance” is a dirty word. It was a different world.

But the truth is, if Rudy Boesch and Richard Hatch hadn’t put a twist on TV’s classic “Odd Couple” formula, the show might not have captured the nation’s imagination and it might not have become a cultural phenomenon. The world might have never ever heard of Parvati Shallow, “Boston” Rob Mariano, or Russell Hantz.

Rudy has my vote every year until he’s enshrined in the “Survivor” Hall of Fame.

Jerri Manthey – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): Is it lazy to cut and paste my Jerri vote from last year? Totally. Am I OK with it because it’s one of my favorite “Survivor” pieces? Yes.

More so than any other long-time player, Jerri had the most satisfying character arc over her three-season run.

(OK, it’s weird to say a real person has had a character arc, but stick with me.)

From Marquesas to “Redemption Island,” Boston Rob matured and learned from his mistakes, but he’s pretty much the same guy. From Australia to “Heroes vs. Villains,” Colby seemed to become disillusioned with the game, but he’s pretty much the same guy.  Rupert’s the same, Ozzy’s the same, Hatch is the same.

Jerri’s not the same.

She was the most hated player on the show’s most watched season during “The Australian Outback.” This notoriety earned her appearances on countless television shows, the cover of Playboy magazine, and more.

Years later during “All-Stars” it was clear that the negative sentiment had finally gotten to her when she left the stage after being booed at the reunion show.

Then finally she emerged during “Heroes vs. Villains” as a woman who was comfortable in her own skin. If you didn’t like her, that was too damn bad. And the funny thing was, everyone liked her.

And I like her too.

So to recap, hated caterpillar in Australia, retreats into her cocoon in “All-Stars,” beautiful butterfly in “Heroes vs. Villains.” And in my book, a Hall of Famer.

Tina Wesson – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”):  I was torn between three people for my final vote; Rupert Boneham, Colby Donaldson, and Tina Wesson. Rupert, because he for better or for worse is the face of “Survivor” for many people. Colby, because he’s the person most people think of when they remember the show’s most-watched season. And Tina, because of her win in Australia and her impressive run in “Blood vs. Water.”

So, I popped “The Australian Outback” in for some inspiration. And, a funny thing happened on the way to the voting booth…I realized that Tina was a lot better than I had been giving her credit for. For some reason I’d always been under the impression that it was Colby’s mistake that won it for her. But, I was very wrong. And then when you include how well she adapted to the modern game, you have a clear leader in the trio. Sure, I’ll vote for Colby and Rupert when I have more ballot space, but until then, I’m Team Wesson.

Steve Helling – People Magazine

Steve Helling is a senior writer at People Magazine and the host of “Murder Made Me Famous” on the Reelz Channel. He’s also a “Survivor” superfan who watched the premiere in 2000 and has never missed an episode. Since 2004, he has covered “Survivor” for People Magazine and people.com, interviewing more than 300 contestants – including a jailhouse interview with Richard Hatch in 2007. When he’s not covering “Survivor” for work, he’s introducing new seasons to his six children or developing “Survivor” knockoff challenges for his son’s cub scout pack.

Tina Wesson – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): It’s a travesty that Tina isn’t already in the “Survivor” Hall of Fame. As the game’s first female winner, she showed that you could pleasantly smile at people as you stabbed them in the back. Tina first played “Survivor” when it was a cultural phenomenon, beating “Friends” in the ratings and drawing more than 32 million weekly viewers. Yes, Tina’s legacy may have been slightly tarnished after her last-place finish in “All-Stars.” (I blame Jenna Lewis.) But her final four showing in “Blood vs. Water” shows that she’s still a force to be reckoned with after all these years.

Jerri Manthey – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): She was “Survivor’s” first – and best – villainess. From the moment she accused Kel of smuggling beef jerky, Jerri became the most hated woman in America, a role that she parlayed into 15 years of television appearances. The irony was that Jerri didn’t play a villainous game: she remained loyal to her alliance until the end. Sure, she wasn’t a morning person, but her bitchiness was tame compared to later villains. After being booed off the stage during “All Stars,” it seemed that we might have seen the last of Jerri – but she returned to “Heroes vs. Villains” and proved that she actually could be a serious threat in this game.

Rudy Boesch – (“Survivor: Borneo” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): No, he wasn’t a strategist. No, wasn’t a physical threat, even though he did win an individual immunity. And he didn’t play a social game. But Rudy Boesch was 72 years old when he played the game that has destroyed people a third of his age. What’s more, he almost won it. Without his blunder during the last immunity challenge, he probably could have beaten either Rich or Kelly. Now nearing 90 years old, Rudy will never play the game again, but his contribution to “Survivor” will never be forgotten.

Drusilla Moorhouse – BuzzFeed

Drusilla Moorhouse is a Copy Editor for BuzzFeed and has covered “Survivor” for E! Online, Zap2it and TV.com. A fanatic of the “Eco Challenge” producer Mark Burnett’s O.G. reality competition, Dru carried a torch for “Survivor” even before the first pixelated images of Richard Hatch hit the airwaves.

Tyson Apostol – (“Survivor: Tocantins,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): The last time I cast my HOF ballot for Tyson, I slammed his social game — but that was before “Blood vs. Water.” For Tyson, the third time was the charm — and he sure charmed that jury! Even though he was responsible for most of their ousters and virtually kicked Katie’s ass on her way out (with that white rock), they gave him a million bucks.

Denise Stapley – (“Survivor: Philippines): This tenacious triathlete had a seat at every single Tribal Council in her season and still walked away with the title of Sole Survivor. (And really, she deserved a bonus for babysitting Abi.)

Jonathan Penner – (“Survivor: Cook Islands,”  “Survivor: Micronesia – Fans vs. Favorites,” and “Survivor: Philippines”): Penner sounds exactly like Alan Alda, and in a battle of wits he might even best Hawkeye Pierce himself. In fact, Penner exudes so much confidence and charisma that it wasn’t until I sat down to defend my nomination that it dawned on me: He’s not really the best player, is he? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Mara Reinstein – US Weekly

Mara Reinstein is the movie critic for Us Weekly magazine. But thanks to her unofficial title as Resident “Survivor” Fanatic, she has somehow finagled her way into 12 (!) “Survivor” location visits since 2004.

Note: Mara chose to only submit two votes this year.

Rudy Boesch – (“Survivor: Borneo” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): Let’s salute the man who was on the wrong side of 70 when he competed back in the very first season. He didn’t have the benefit of crafty deal-making rewards or cozy comforts. He just sucked it up and endured it. Plus, his strategy was pretty good and he had to look at a naked Richard Hatch for almost 39 days.

Rupert Boneham – (“Survivor: Pearl Islands,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): Yes, his game-play got progressively worse. Yes, he made a huge mistake in swapping places with his wife in “Blood vs. Water.” Yes, that hippie-dippie, tye-dye schtick is more worn out than a pair of used Birkenstocks. Wait, where was I going with this? Oh, right: He deserves the honors just for the being the ultimate endearing pirate back in Pearl Islands. And he persevered through “Heroes vs. Villains” with a broken toe. Years from now, even casual fans will remember Rupert. Can’t say the same for, say, purple Kelly.

Dalton Ross – Entertainment Weekly

Dalton Ross is the Assistant Managing Editor of Entertainment Weekly. He may have written about this show once or twice over the past 15 years.

Tony Vlachos – (“Survivor: Cagayan”): He was far from the perfect player in Cagayan,” but we had never seen someone play “Survivor” that aggressive before until Tony Vlachos came around. Changing up votes, repeatedly voting against his own alliance, and then somehow getting them to fall back into line after; the fact that someone could play the game so differently in season 28 (and win) is pretty remarkable. I still don’t quite understand how Tony did it, but I totally respect it. And he managed to do it all while hiding out in his spy shack and busting out llama impressions for good measure. If you don’t think Tony deserves this honor, go back and watch Spencer’s final Tribal Council speech. If a self-proclaimed gamebot like Spencer can have that much esteem for Tony’s game, than so should we.

J.T. Thomas – (“Survivor: Tocantins” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): Some people vote for “characters” or people they simply like on their Hall of Fame ballot, and that’s totally fine seeing as how everyone has a different definition of what constitutes a worthy entrant. For me, however, it’s people that came on and flat-out dominated — the Kim Spradlins and Tom Westmans of the world. They’re both in, so why isn’t J.T.? He was just as dominant in Tocantins,” getting people in the opposite majority alliance after the merge to fall head over heels in love with him. He was devastatingly effective in all three aspects of the game — strategic, social, physical. Don’t believe me? Just ask Fishbach, whom he skunked in the finals. Sure, J.T. made a terrible move in Heroes vs. Villains in giving a hidden immunity idol to someone on the opposite tribe, but it was a big swing-for-the-fences play. You have to respect that fact that he had the cojones to try it. Bottom line: He may not be flashy, but J.T. gave one of the best first season performances in “Survivor” history. Shouldn’t that be recognized?

Brian Heidik – (“Survivor: Thailand”): If there is some sort of soft porn hall of fame, then hopefully Heidik is already in it. But here is another HOF in which he deserves entry. Look, Heidik is a shady dude and his season was terrible. So naturally you want to dismiss him and instead vote in someone that has appeared on this show three or four times and is a hell of a lot more likable. I get that. But again, I am voting on gameplay, and the guy ran Thailand” from coast-to-coast. He orchestrated all the votes. He won all the important challenges. He was always in control.  Athletes are judged solely for their performance on the field in terms of Hall of Fame admission, and I use that same criteria for players in the game of Survivor.” Heidik dominated, so should be in. We may not like it, but sometimes you have to go with your head instead of your heart. (Especially when, like me, you have no heart.)

Tom Santilli – Examiner.com

Tom Santilli is the “Survivor Examiner,” having covered “Survivor” for Examiner.com and TheTVKing.com since 2009 and having been a rabid fan since the very beginning.  He is also a film critic and appears weekly on the syndicated TV show “Movie Show Plus.”  (follow him on Twitter, @tomsantilli and at TomSantilli.com).  He claims to own his own “Medallion of Power” that gives him a slight advantage in writing “Survivor” recaps.

Rudy Boesch – (“Survivor: Borneo” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): Now that there are 14 members of the “Survivor” Hall of Fame, a simple eyeball test will reveal to you who is missing. My first two picks are faces that are iconic to the game, and glaring omissions from the Hall. First up, above anyone else, is Rudy. This isn’t just a sentimental vote, although that’s part of it. He was also one of the most entertaining and inspirational contestants ever. His unexpected friendship with Richard Hatch encapsulated the essence of “Survivor,” showing that people from all walks of life can live together and even become friends within the unique framework of the game. Let’s not forget that he was one hand-slip away from winning the first-ever “Survivor” too. When contestants wised up by the time of “All-Stars,” Rudy was voted off early because every other person knew they had no shot against him, were he to stay. Heck, the dude walked away from a roll-over car accident a few years back without a scratch. He’s invincible. He’s incredible. He’s Rudy. And he should be a Hall of Famer.

Rupert Boneham – (“Survivor: Pearl Islands,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): This dude is one of only two players to have played the game four times. He is another iconic face of the game and one of the most popular ever to play. While he isn’t quite deserving to make the Hall based on his strategic skills, there are many other reasons why certain players should be inducted. Hundreds have now played the game, but how many could you identify by just their voice? Rupert is a guy no one will ever forget and he deserves a spot.

Brian Heidik – (“Survivor: Thailand”): It’s time for my annual push for Brian Heidik, who to me, is the sole remaining “first-ballot”-worthy contestant still deserving inclusion…an upper echelon player and the one guy who needs to be in the “Survivor” Hall of Fame. I voted for him the past few years and I will continue doing so until others take notice…Brian is unlike any other Sole Survivor for many important reasons. At the time that he won, nobody thought that a “bad guy” could ever win “Survivor” again after Richard Hatch. Brian to this day is the only true “villain,” playing a villainous game, to have won it all. Brian played masterfully, despite back-stabbing and lying his way to the prize. He was a thinker, but he also won several individual immunity challenges along the way. Others (like, say, Kim Spradlin) have made “Survivor” look easy, but he was the first. Like him or not, admit it or not, he was the blueprint for every strategic player since. The “Survivor” HOF will never be complete until it includes the likes of Brian Heidik.

Josh Wigler – Parade

Josh Wigler is a writer, editor and podcaster who has been published by MTV News, New York Magazine, Comic Book Resources, Digital Trends and more. He is the co-author of “The Evolution of Strategy: 30 Seasons of Survivor,” an audiobook chronicling the reality TV show’s transformation, and one of the hosts of “Post Show Recaps,” a podcast about film and television.

Rudy Boesch – (“Survivor: Borneo” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): Wait, Rudy’s not already in the Hall of Fame? Seriously? How is that even possible? To quote the man himself, “I dunno.” Someone’s hand must’ve slipped at the switch. Anyway, Rudy is as synonymous with “Survivor” as almost anyone, the franchise’s original fan-favorite, the elder statesman of the series. Respect where it’s due.

Tina Wesson – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): The second winner in “Survivor” history, Tina went from million-dollar Outback champion to the first boot on “All-Stars,” only to return almost twenty full seasons later, as competitive as ever, on “Blood vs Water.” She’s a terrific and historic player who absolutely warrants a HOF nod.

Jerri Manthey – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”): I could make the case for Colby Donaldson or Rupert Boneham, but nope. Instead, let’s go with Colby’s original nemesis and Rupert’s fellow Saboga. (The third Saboga on my list! Man, great tribe. Apologies to Jenna Lewis.) She’s the original Black Widow of “Survivor,” so loathed that she was booed off the stage at the “All-Stars” reunion, only to return 12 seasons later to wrap up one of the most satisfying character arcs of any “Survivor” ever. For legacy reasons alone, Jerri gets my last spot. Also, she promised me tortillas and chocolate if I voted for her.

Rudy Boesch – (“Survivor: Borneo” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): When the tribe was scrambling to make a shelter to sleep above the flea-infested beach and and find water to boil and drink in order to survive the elements, the oldest contestant ever, Rudy, dug a 6-foot trench in the beach, lined it with palm leaves, and slept in it. Then he proceeded to drink the unfiltered, un-boiled water from a tiny stream. “I used to drink water with dead bodies floating in it…this stuff is fine.” What more do I need to say?

Lex van den Berghe – (“Survivor: Africa” and “Survivor: All-Stars”): Lex was a major factor in helping me win “Survivor: Africa”…not so true in “All-Stars.” We aligned on Day 1 and stayed true for the remaining 38 days. Lex was made to be a villain, but he was just playing aggressive and performed well in challenges. In my mind Lex used the concept of “Voting Blocks”…but we just called it “voting, with a side order of trusted alliance.”

Tina Wesson – (“Survivor: The Australian Outback,” “Survivor: All-Stars,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”):  One of the few players that has embraced all aspects of the game and performed well (minus “All-Stars”…but the former winners had no chance). A strategic manipulative force masked in a cute, happy, athletic body. She played Old School and New School and with family members. And she did well!

Jesse Jensen has been with “Survivor” since 2000 working his way up from Art Department to Art Director to Producer. His creativity allows for some of the most visually stunning Tribal Councils that set the stage for those great dramatic moments that we love so much.

Jesse Jensen’s 2015 Hall of Fame Ballot

Benjamin “Coach” Wade – (“Survivor: Tocantins,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: South Pacific”): Here I go again, but I am going to keep throwing his name out there until he gets a spot in the Hall of Fame. I love this guy, so as per last year he is my top pick. The “Dragon Slayer”  has always given us amazing drama and funny moments that keep us all entertained throughout all his seasons. Anyone that has been such a dynamic character on three seasons of the show deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Tyson Apostol – (“Survivor: Tocantins,” “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” and “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”): Tyson has always kept us laughing, I’d say for me he has been the most amusing player of all time, so many funny moments. He has such a great energy about him and as a three-time competitor and eventual winner of the show, I can’t see how he can’t make the Hall of Fame.

Stephenie LaGrossa – (“Survivor: Palau,” “Survivor: Guatemala,” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains”):  I am going to nominate Stephanie yet again this year. She has played the game three times and in her first season in Palau she was an extremely popular character and she showed us what a strong player she was both physically and mentally. She was so good that we brought her straight back the very next season to compete in Guatemala where she finished in second place. In “Heroes vs. Villains” she played a tough game, but it just didn’t work out for her that time around. In my opinion she is one the most well rounded and popular players we have seen on the show.
