Gordon Holmes: Tell me you burned that idol the first chance you got. It’s clearly cursed.
Chris Noble: A producer snatched it right away from me.
Holmes: That’s probably for the best. I’d hate for it to cause you more problems.
Noble: Oh, it’s a relic I’d hold onto forever because it was a great moment for me regardless.

Holmes: Dom plays his idol, I’m assuming based on the conversation at the water well that you thought that it’d be a split vote and Wendell would be going home. Is that correct?
Noble: What wasn’t shown was originally when I went to the water well I just wanted to talk to Angela and Des. They were two of my closest allies. And everyone else just followed. And then there was this awkward moment when everyone was looking around. So I thought, “Screw this. I didn’t come out here to not play this game.” I made the mistake, my personality, my impulsive behavior sometimes costs me. And I was like, “Alright guys, this is what we should do.” And I think the plan was a good plan. But, it was the wrong thing to do in the game of “Survivor.” I had multiple conversations with people and for the most part, people like Sebastian and other allies like Donathan all lied to me. But, that’s part of the game.
Holmes: So, if everyone had done what they had said they were going to do, what would have been the outcome of Tribal?
Noble: I thought that Dom and Wendell would vote for me and at the worst, I didn’t see how enough numbers would vote me out. Because I worked so hard to build relationships with people. And ultimately, that was my strategy to make it far in the game because the target on my back was so big. I had to play the loyal card. I had to hold onto that idol for one more Tribal to get me further in the game. I had to risk it because that would’ve bought me six, nine days. Who knows what can happen over that time? Loved ones is on day 30.

Holmes: You talk about making personal relationships and then you come home and watch the edit where there’s a lot of eye-rolling going on. I think specifically Laurel was having conversations with you, but she had to bite her tongue around you. Did you pick up on any of that while you were out there or were you experiencing it for the first time while watching the episode?
Noble: I did not pick up on any of that. It was a shame to hear her say that. What a lot of people don’t know is on day twelve she slept next to me. She’s crying at night. I go over and I give her a hug and I tell her, “Everything’s going to be alright.” Then, we had great conversations. Then at Yanuya, the night before the swimming challenge we got poured on. We didn’t sleep, it was miserable. And me, Wendell, and Laurel, we walked around the island, we held each other, we took care of each other during this horrible night. To hear her say things like that is unfortunate. Because I never felt badly about her. But, you never know whose egos are going to get hurt if you’re a confident person. And apparently, her ego was sort of fragile.

Holmes: Alright, word association time. Let’s start with James?
Noble: Brilliant.
Holmes: Libby?
Noble: Beautiful.
Holmes: Laurel?
Noble: Intelligent.
Holmes: Michael?
Noble: Impressive.
Holmes: Donathan?
Noble: Back-stabber.
Holmes: Jenna?
Noble: Funny.
Holmes: Bradley?
Noble: Dick.
Holmes: Sebastian?
Noble: Lovable.
Holmes: Morgan?
Noble: Charismatic.
Holmes: Chelsea?
Noble: Quiet.
Holmes: Kellyn?
Noble: Sweet.
Holmes: Wendell?
Noble: Silent assassin.
Holmes: Or rap critic.
Noble: (Laughs)
Holmes: Desiree?
Noble: Fiery.
Holmes: Angela?
Noble: Sweetheart.
Holmes: And let’s finish with Domenick.
Noble: Respect.

Holmes: You mentioned that you were close with Desiree, Angela, and Sebastian. In hindsight, were there any clues you could have picked up on that your number was up?
Noble: It’s always easier in hindsight. The only clue that I can think of that I should have picked up on was, I went to get wood with Sebastian. I asked him to go with me, and he helped, and then he left. And on the walk I asked him, “Do you think this is a good plan? Do you think people are going to go with it?” And he said, “Yeah, I think it’s a great plan.” And once we dropped the wood, he left. Looking back, that was my signal that something was wrong. It was my first lead-up to Tribal and I had nothing to base it off of. It was a disadvantage.

Holmes: It seems like Sebastian and Jenna are in a relationship outside of the show. Was that going on during the game?
Noble: There were no real clues that they were together. And I don’t think they were together like that during the game. There definitely was a sign of friendship, but for me, because Sebastian and I were bros, I thought maybe she was just an extra vote for him. That can only be a good thing for me. The funny thing is that Sebastian came up to Wendell and me when we first got to Yanuya and said we should vote for Jenna.
Holmes: That would get him into trouble today.
Noble: (Laughs) Yes.

Holmes: Did you mother get a chance to watch the season?
Noble: Yes, she did.
Holmes: What’d she think?
Noble: My mom was very proud of me. She told me I was her hero. Being mama bear, there were definitely some things she did not like. I had to calm her down. But after episode six, she called me after that tough edit I had. And she read me a note that the National MS Society had sent to her about everything I’d been doing for her and the MS community. It was nothing but good things about me. And she said, “That’s you, Christopher. Don’t let things that people say change anything.” That was one of the most beautiful things that I’ve ever had in my life. My mom came to me and she brought me up.

Holmes: Chris, I’d imagine you’re a very polarizing player. But, I think you were a blast to watch.
Noble: Thank you.
Holmes: What has the reaction been like from fans?
Noble: It’s probably similar to people in real life. You either really love me or really hate me. I’m confident. I’m comfortable in my own skin regardless of what people say or do. I know I’m going to make it wherever I want to go. The fans, there have been people who love me and have stood up for me. And there have been fans who really hate me. And, that’s awesome for entertainment.

‘Survivor: Ghost Island’ Episode 8 Recap – Rap Battle

April 11, 2018

“Survivor: Ghost Island” (CBS)

Last Week: It was Wendell’s girlfriend’s birthday, but he received a gift, a Micronesian (expletive deleted) stick gave Michael’s game a lift, and while Bradley finally got nicer accomodations, the upgrade left him miffed.

39 Days, 20 People, 1 “Survivor” Blog

The tribes as they currently stand…

The Naviti Tribe (wearing purple)
Chelsea, 24 – EMT/Professional Cheerleader
Donathan, 26 – Caretaker
Domenick, 38 – Construction Supervisor
Libby, 24 – Social Media Strategist

The Malolo Tribe (wearing orange)
Angela, 42 – Army Veteran
Desiree, 21 – Student
Kellyn, 31 – Career Counselor
Michael, 18 – Real Estate Agent

The Yanuya Tribe (wearing green)
Chris, 27 – Male Model
Jenna, 23 – Advertising Account Executive
Laurel, 29 – Financial Consultant
Sebastian, 22 – Fishing Guide
Wendell, 33 – Furniture Company Owner

Welcome to Mergeville – Population 13

We start off with our friends from Yanuya and Malolo as they travel toward Naviti beach for the merge. Aww…that would’ve made Bradley so happy.

Tidbits from the merge feast…

  • The seats are random. Of course, one of those random spaces includes a clue. And the lucky recipient is…Chris.
  • The new tribe is named “Lavita.”
  • Domenick gives a speech encouraging everyone to play their hardest and get along.
  • Chris gives his own toast and…well…it’s a rap. He did another rap. Another Chris rap…

A Late-Night Rendezvous

So…Chris’s advantage is that a boat will arrive at night to take him to Ghost Island to retrieve an idol. The catch is; can he sneak out without anyone noticing? Interesting. It’s like a Ghost Island booty call.

Chris decides to go for it and manages to escape without anybody seeing him.

When he arrives, he learns that the idol (which JT neglected to bring to the “Game Changers” Tribal where he was voted out) is only good for the next Tribal Council. Buuuut…he can risk his next vote to extend the power. He can gamble his vote up to five times, each time will earn him a single Tribal’s extension.

Chris again decides to go for it. He’s successful in his first attempt and unsuccessful in his second. So, he has an idol that is available for use in one of the next two Tribals, but he won’t be able to vote in the next Tribal.

Whew…got all that?

Also, that’s like the 40th “Game Changers” themed cursed item.

Naviti Reunion?

The members of classic Naviti want to get together to get rid of one more classic Malolo member, but Domenick is very wary of working with Chris. Wendell proposes mediating a peace summit between the two.

The meeting goes about as well as expected with Dom trying to extend an olive branch and Chris treating the olive branch like a microphone and spitting a battle rap in Dom’s face.

OK, it wasn’t that bad. But Chris is clearly not interested in talking strategy with Domenick. Well, they tried.

Later on, Chris tells us that he’s too “suave” to fall for their tricks. Meanwhile, thousands of “Wand-off” fans start penciling lyrics to a “Rico Suave” parody.

Immunity Challenge Time: The players will stand on a balance beam while holding a pole over their head. At the end of the pole is a small statue. If a player falls off of the beam or their statue falls, they are eliminated. The last person standing wins immunity.

This would be the perfect challenge for a boom mic operator.

Result: It comes down to Libby vs. Kellyn, with Kellyn pulling off the win.

Pre-Tribal Politicking

So, Chris immediately leads ten of his closest friend to the water well so they can talk about the vote. This is as hilarious as it sounds. Once they get there, he pitches splitting the vote between Wendell and Domenick to flush Dom’s idol.

An eleven-person alliance. What could go wrong?

Everyone seems to be on board, but I can’t imagine the Laurels and Kellyns of the world are going to go along with it.

Chris assures us that this is a “foolproof” plan.

Back at camp, Wendell admits to Domenick that he has an idol and is willing to play it.

When everyone returns, Donathan immediately spills the beans to Domenick and Wendell. Domenick wants to get Jenna and Libby on their side, but Donathan warns him against it.

Meanwhile, Libby and Jenna feel pretty safe and make the point that Domenick is much more deceptive than Chris.

In other news, the women of classic Naviti are making plans of their own. Desiree throws out the idea of getting rid of Libby…for some reason.

Tribal Time

They don’t waste much time before opening up the Chris vs. Domenick debate. Domenick gives his version of the rift, saying that Chris was still mad at him for calling him out during the opening challenge and Dom showing Chris his (fake) idol couldn’t get him to trust him. Dom then produced his fake idol and started wearing it.

Chris countered by saying that he returned from Ghost Island to learn that Dom had targeted someone named Angela.

Voting Time: Domenick votes for Chris as loudly as possible, Wendell votes for “Chris the Rapper” and gives a must-see speech about how Chris should stop rapping, the rest of the votes are sooper secret.

JPro tallies and returns. He asks if anyone wants to play an idol and…Domenick uses his legacy advantage for himself.

Alright, we’ve got two votes for Chris, two votes for Libby, four votes for Chris, and the eighth person voted out of “Survivor: Ghost Island” and the first member of the jury is…Chris.

Wow…not a single person who went on Chris’s water expedition stuck to the plan.

Also, kudos to Chris for being a good sport and congratulating Domenick and Wendell on the way out.

Verdict: So…maybe JT’s idol really was cursed?

  • Wendell – From peacemaker to target to sitting pretty. Wendell’s going to have a great case to make to a jury.
  • Domenick – Hey, you tried to work with the guy. I can’t even fault you for using the legacy advantage. Better safe than sorry.
  • The Naviti Women – Let the world burn, then you can pick up the pieces.
  • Donathan and Laurel – It looks like you two are pretty solid with Wendell and Dom at this point. But…you don’t have strong jury cases yet.
  • Libby – I’m assuming the votes you received were in case Chris played an idol. That’s probably not great for you.
  • Sebastian, Michael, and Jenna – I can’t give you full credit if you don’t show your work.

Power Rankings Results: Roark and I both had Chris in spot thirteen. The current score is Team Roark 78, Team Gordon 80.

QUICK NOTE: XFINITY.com is the place to be for all of your bug-eatin’, back-stabbin’, “Survivor” coverage. During the season we’ll have insightful weekly Power Rankings with Roark Luskin, exit interviews, and full episode recaps. Follow me on Twitter (@gordonholmes) for up-to-the-minute updates.

The Rules: Each week our two combatants will create separate power rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the players will earn. At the end of the season, the person with the most points will be named the “Survivor: Ghost Island” Power Rankings Challenge Champion.

Last Week: Roark had Bradley in spot twelve, I had him in spot eleven. The current score is Team Roark 65, Team Gordon 67.

Quick Note: Rankings are not based on who the player thinks is most likely to win. The smart strategy is to rank players based on how safe you think they are in the upcoming vote.

Roark’s Score: 65

Gordon’s Score: 67

Any questions for Gordon? Drop him a line on Twitter: @gordonholmes

1. Domenick: It’s a coinflip between Dom and Wendell being the quote unquote safest. Smart guys, in power, have idols. Good to go. 1. Wendell: Ooo…look at me…I can remember my girlfriend’s birthday. Show off. I’ll be impressed when you can find the world’s biggest immunity idol. Oh wait…nevermind.
2. Wendell: I have to assume the happy-birthday-to-my-girlfriend edit was directed at me. Sorry for making it weird, Wendell. You’re doing great. 2. Domenick: I’m still not sure if I totally understand the Bradley move. But, you do you. Anywho, you’ve got an idol, a legacy advantage, and the numbers. All Chris has are dope rhymes. (Do the kids still say “Dope”?)
3. Laurel: She’s infiltrated Naviti really nicely, and seems to be on good terms with her Malolo crew. Laurel is cruisin’ 3. Laurel: Just…you’re everything. You’re just playing a masterful game. Even the Malolo reek of failure can’t hold you down.
4. Kellyn: Kellyn is obviously safe as all get out. I just wish she would say something of substance. I am really tired of hearing about her gut. 4. Kellyn: I’ll admit to being a big fan of Kellyn’s victory face. (You know the one.) If it’s that big for winning an extra vote, I imagine her whole jaw will unhinge if she wins the million.
5. Donathan: Donathan seemed very eager to play in the pre-merge – trying to play the middle, etc – I hope he’s willing to cool his jets and go with the flow in the early merge. Just be cool. Don’t be all uncool. 5. Chelsea: We’re not seeing much of you, but you sure got the best of Bradley. Nobody’s worried about you at this point, but you’re going to have to start being more visible if you’re going to win over a jury.
6. Sea Bass: More confessionals please. Because if his Instagram captions are any indication he has a lot more to say. 6. Donathan: I was worried that your little feud with Bradley was going to get you into some trouble, but you figured it out. Now that the merge is upon us, you’re going to have to make some noise if you want to win.
7. Jenna: Jenna seems to be having fun and DGAF. She seems flexible and will just go where the numbers tell her. 7. Sea Bass: Sebastian is going to find himself on the wrong side of the numbers, and people are always eager to break up couples, but he isn’t going to be anyone’s first target.
8. Desiree: Des isn’t winning any puzzle-based challenges any time soon, so she’ll likely remain an open target. At this point her best-case scenario is to hide behind bigger targets. 8. Michael: Michael didn’t get much mileage out of his first idol, he won’t make the same mistakes with the (expletive deleted) stick.
9. Michael: Based on his reading of those idol rules, I hope Michael sticks to modeling and never pivots to audio book voice recording artist. He is getting so much screen time he is definitely safe, but I don’t trust him to play this idol correctly. 9. Desiree: There’s no reason to go after Desiree anytime soon. She’s fine.
10. Libby: As previously ranked, Libby seems to be on people’s radars. I think bigger fish will prevail earlier, but she’s probably in trouble soon. 10. Jenna: Am I wrong in assuming that people know Jenna’s in a relationship with Sea Bass? If they’re just bros at this point, then she’s fine. If they’re cuddling up, she’s going to have a target on her back.
11. Chelsea: Chelsea seems to be sitting out literally all portions of this “Survivor” season. 11. Libby: TOTAL E-LIB-INATON! Libby should have been an easy vote last week, but she managed to hang around. We may be selling her short. But, the fact remains that Domenick still doesn’t trust her.
12. Angela: Libby didn’t really do too much this week, and as Chris’s main ally, I’m ranking her low. Oh I’m sorry, Angela. My bad. 12. Angela: If Chris wins immunity, you’re a goner. If he loses, you’ll probably have some opportunities to make some moves.
13. Chris: I would be a fool not to rank Chris here, although it utterly breaks my heart. It’s like watching Krystal leave “The Bachelor.” You know she’s not winning, but she’s also the lightning rod of the group. You’ll be missed, Chris. Hope your exit press is bonkers. 13. Chris: Alright stop…collaborate and listen, Chris is done for in the latest edition. Domenick has just done a better job of creating allies and he has an idol. Maybe Chris can put together an immunity run, but those early individual immunities tend to be balance and endurance based, not baseball based.

‘Survivor’ Castaway Bradley – “I Was Perceived as a Big Threat in the Game”

April 5, 2018

Gordon Holmes: Were there any signs that tipped you off that you might have been in trouble?
Bradley Kleihege: Absolutely. I didn’t think I was going home, but I didn’t feel 100% whatsoever. I didn’t trust Chelsea at all. She’d been after me since day two. Luckily she told Kellyn and Kellyn came right back to me. So, I didn’t trust her. I thought I was close with Dom, but after we lost the immunity challenge I knew something was up. The problem was; I didn’t have any actionable intelligence to go off of that something was actually up. And so, do I make a big deal about it and Tribal and maybe that will save me? But, I thought in that situation the risk that nothing was up and I was just being paranoid, would then throw myself out in a way. So, you’d hear me say, “We’re one big happy family, everybody is getting along.” No, we weren’t at all. That’s what I had to go with because I didn’t have enough information and I though the risk of blowing it up was too high. I didn’t think I’d be in trouble until the merge. I knew at the merge, from a Naviti standpoint, that Chelsea or I would have to go. I knew she didn’t like me in the game at all. She thought I was completely untrustworthy. I wasn’t expecting it at that point.

Holmes: They made it look like you were voted out because you were annoying Domenick. But, ever since Redemption Island, we know that it’s smart to take annoying people to the end. Was there something else behind the vote that we didn’t see?
Kleihege: If you ask Dom or anyone else, my edit made it look like I was a lot less of threat. At that point I was not a final Tribal goat. I was perceived as a big threat in the game because I had so effectively been voting off the Malolos when I was at Malolo. And so, Dom and I got along for the most part. When we were originally at Naviti, most of the people wanted to get rid of him. Dom and I were pretty close, and a couple of times I said to him, “You’ve got to chill out. People want you out because you’re going nuts.” And he was going nuts. He wasn’t fitting in with anybody. I perceived it as, I was trying to tell him what was going on, and he perceived it as me talking down to him. That’s what he was referring to.

Holmes: You mentioned that you and Chelsea weren’t getting along. What was the catalyst for that?
Kleihege: I have hung out with Chelsea multiple times since we’ve gotten back. She’s a really great person, but in the game, she was her edit. She was quiet, fake, irrelevant. I played every day with Chelsea. And because there’s nothing else to do, we’d talk. And every day I’d say, “Nope, still haven’t had a real conversation with Chelsea.” She just wouldn’t give you her real stuff. It took me until day seventeen. We were talking about camping in the mountains because she’s from Utah and I lived there for a while. We both love camping. And I walked over to one of the producers and I said, “It took seventeen days and we finally had a real conversation.”

Holmes: Alright, word association time. Let’s start with Libby.
Kleihege: Simple.
Holmes: Wendell?
Kleihege: Hang on…I have these written down.
Holmes: Cheater.
Kleihege: Wendell…astute.
Holmes: Chelsea?
Kleihege: Irrelevant.
Holmes: Angela?
Kleihege: Harsh.
Holmes: Brendan?
Kleihege: I didn’t think of Brendan.
Holmes: Good.
Kleihege: Um…boring…I guess.
Holmes: Chris?
Kleihege: Ridiculous.
Holmes: Desiree?
Kleihege: Cool.
Holmes: Stephanie?
Kleihege: Larger than life.
Holmes: Michael?
Kleihege: Sauve.
Holmes: Sebastian?
Kleihege: Chill.
Holmes: Kellyn?
Kleihege: A “Survivor” producer’s dream come true.
Holmes: Morgan?
Kleihege: So congenial. Morgan is amazing.
Holmes: Jenna?
Kleihege: She’s just like no (expletive deleted) given.
Holmes: Donathan?
Kleihege: Awful.
Holmes: Let’s finish with Domenick.
Kleihege: Brash.

Holmes: Why is Donathan awful?
Kleihege: He was being built up by Jeff and some of the other contestants. In the beginning you have that water challenge where he pulled the lever. There were people on Naviti who were congratulating him. What you didn’t see was he sat there for 20 minutes telling everyone he wasn’t going to get in the water. Jeff practically berated him until he got in the water and pulled the lever. So, he becomes this big hero. But I don’t think a hero would have gotten out of the water. I think a hero would have been there with James in the water trying to encourage him. Instead, he whined that he couldn’t do it. So, I think that started to get into his head so you had someone who was so sure he could do things his own way to the point of fault, really. I was the one who cooked the rice and he would start doing stuff to the rice. And I’d be like, “Hey, I’m doing this.” And he’d say, “I can cook rice it I want to, so I’m going to do whatever I want.” It was just really insufferable. And you just don’t see that. There are a couple of people who are getting really unrealistic edits. And Donathan is 100% one of them.
Holmes: Who else is getting an unrealistic edit?
Kleihege: I think Chris is getting a softer version of himself.
Holmes: He was more abrasive?
Kleihege: Yes…maybe more ridiculous.
Holmes: (Laughs) More ridiculous? I don’t buy that.
Kleihege: He looks a little more bearable and harmless that he was in real life.

Holmes: The tribe sent Kellyn to Ghost Island becausethey didn’t want everyone knowing Ghost Island’s secrets. Was the real reason that she was on your side and you were hoping she’d score and advantage?
Kleihege: Oh 100% she was on my side. We sent her because then I’d know what happened and the two of us would be able to figure out how to play it.

Holmes: And finally, do you want to give us a Yelp review for Malolo beach?
Kleihege: (Laughs) It got so windy at night that we all froze to death. It was awful. My complaining, there was a strategic bend to it. I wasn’t complaining to complain. My strategy didn’t work, but I was trying to say, “It’s not your fault that you’ve been losing. The other place is like the Four Seasons.” They couldn’t sleep. It was so cold and windy. It was me being frustrated with the producers that it was so uneven. I was trying to complain to the producers. I’d say, “Don’t feel bad, this is why you’re losing.” And the ants are so annoying. They were always all over you. It was kind of ridiculous. It’s not as nice as Naviti, but it’s still paradise.

A (Expletive Deleted) Stick Story

The stick never asked for any of this.

Having fallen off a branch a few years prior, the stick was content to spend the rest of his days as most Micronesian sticks do; laying on the ground, being moved about by wild animals…maybe even floating off to sea. Who knows where he could end up?

One day, he was plucked from the ground by a handsome man in a straw hat. The stick was a bit nervous, but he was excited to have a new friend. That excitement quickly turned to horror as the man cruelly carved away at his bark with a knife, wrapped him in a cloth, and buried him under a rock.

Terrified, the stick laid there not knowing what to think. Finally he heard the man whisper, “Do your job now, buddy.”

His job?

Those words rattled around the poor stick’s head. What could that possibly mean?

He’d have his answer soon enough. A few days later, a second handsome man came to retrieve him. And with that, the stranger exclaimed, “I guess this is the hidden immunity idol.”

Wait…the carving, the wrapping, the burying…was this how someone becomes a hidden immunity idol?

If so, it had all been worth it.

The stick was brought back to the tribe’s camp. He eventually learned that the person who had created him was named Ozzy and the person who now wielded his considerable influence was Jason.

He waited, in the shadows, eager for the moment where he’d get to display his new-found power.

And that day finally came. Jason had won an individual immunity challenge and had promised the stick to his alliance member, an attractive young woman named Eliza.

The stick was ecstatic as Jason handed him over. But Eliza didn’t share his enthusiasm. Instead of being overjoyed by Jason’s generous gift, she became enraged.

They argued back and forth, the stick didn’t know what to think. But he knew he’d never forget the look of disgust on the New York attorney’s face when she said, “It’s a (expletive deleted) stick.”

“A (expletive deleted) stick?” he thought. “Well, I’ll show you what this (expletive deleted) stick can do.”

That night at Tribal Council, the stick waited patiently for his opportunity to shine. The back-and-forth debate didn’t seem particularly heated, but it was clear that Eliza would need his assistance.

Votes were cast and then Jeff Probst asked if anyone would like to play a hidden immunity idol. The stick was so excited he felt like he was about to burst.

Eliza stood, crossed the Tribal Council set, and handed her prize to the show’s host. The stick beamed with pride as Probst explained that a hidden immunity idol would negate all of Eliza’s votes and the person with next highest amount of votes would be asked to leave the game.

It was at that moment that the stick saw something he’d never forget…Ozzy was laughing.

Why would the man who had granted him such immense power find this humorous?

This thought was quickly put aside when Jeff Probst proclaimed, “This is not a hidden immunity idol.”

Disappointment, disbelief, shame, anger…all rushed through the stick’s tiny body. And before he had a chance to fully compute any of these complex emotions, he felt his body hurtling through the air.

Had Jeff thrown him? Why would he throw…?

Then fire…all around him. White hot flames licked at the tiny stick’s body.

The final indignity? Hearing Ozzy’s faux protest, “C’mon, that took hours to make.” Followed by the raucous laughter of his cohorts.

And then darkness.

The stick awoke days later in the possession of “Survivor” Executive Producer Matt Van Wagenen. Matt had asked a production assistant to fish the stick out of the fire. And honestly, a few scorch marks aside, the poor stick wasn’t in that bad of shape…physically.

Mentally, the past few days had taken quite a toll. To go from regular Micronesian stick, to powerful immunity idol, to kindling? It was too much of an emotional rollercoaster for the little guy to bear. After it was all said and done Eliza was right, he was just a stick.

Just a (expletive deleted) stick.

Matt had considered keeping the stick on his desk as a souvenir. But, as the game played out, Eliza was sent home, followed by Ozzy and Jason, both of whom had real idols in their possession.

All three of the players who’d handled the stick had met embarrassing ends…was it possible this stick was…cursed?

And was Matt himself now cursed? Sure, as a television producer, he didn’t have to be worried about being voted out of a reality show, but he had a full life and a family to think about.

So, he did what any sensible person would do. He sent it far away.

Matt had purchased a small Fijian island a few years prior. He thought it’d make a good vacation spot for some time in the future.

He gathered up the stick, along with a few other dubious “Survivor” mementoes he’d acquired over the years, and left them there.

Matt sent quite a few failed items there over the years; legacy advantages that had backfired, extra votes that were misplayed. He considered it to be his “Island of Misfit Toys.”

But, the stick and the other inhabitants began to refer to it by a different name…“Ghost Island.”

For ten years the stick lived there, and while the majority of the game’s discarded advantages were polite enough, there was one inhabitant who seemed to delight in making the stick’s life difficult.

“My season of ‘Survivor’ was one of the most popular ever,” he’d boast.

“You could trade me for a bucket of water in an immunity challenge,” he’d crow.

“I’m a shiny medallion and you’re just a (expletive deleted) stick,” he’d chide.

That last jibe was the one that would always get to the stick. He knew his place in the world, he didn’t have to be reminded.

The funny thing about this story is that old sticks tend to be like Guatemala cast members…they don’t get second chances. But that all changed the day Matt Van Wagenen and several production assistants returned to pay the misfit toys a visit.

The island’s inhabitants assumed he was just dropping off more disappointing trinkets, but the look on his face told a different story. The crew slowly started gathering the items. They even overheard Matt telling the staff members that the advantages would have a chance to return to the game and “reverse the curse.”

All of the items were overjoyed with this news. Well, everyone except for the stick. An idol can be replayed, an extra vote can be recast. What can you possibly do with a stick?

“Oh, don’t forget that one,” Matt said as he reached down to claim the stick.

One of the crew tilted his head and asked, “What’s that?”

Matt smiled and said, “Oh, this might be the most cursed item of them all. All three of the players who touched it met horrible fates. Eliza Orlins spent her entire time on the jury with a shocked look on her face. Ozzy Lusth would go on to be voted out four more times. And Jason Siska? Well, nobody ever saw him again.”

“So,” Matt continued, “We’re bringing it back and making it a real immunity idol.”

If the crude face Ozzy had carved into the side of the stick was capable of movement, it would have been grinning from ear to ear. The stick was simply elated knowing that his life’s dream had finally been realized.

Matt placed the stick into his bag along with the Medallion of Power and several other items. The arrogant Medallion, upon seeing the stick, asked, “Where do you think you’re going? You’re just a (expletive deleted) stick.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, Medallion,” he replied.

“I’m the (expletive deleted) stick.”

All of the items were taken back to the “Survivor” production facility where they were repackaged and eventually hidden in the game.

The stick found himself placed by a tree on Malolo Beach. From the little he overheard from passing contestants, he knew this tribe was in dire straits. Yeah…the stick could relate.

Finally, he was plucked from the ground by an attractive young man named Michael. “Huh,” the stick thought to himself, “Everyone on this show is good looking.”

Michael was overjoyed with his discovery, telling the camera crew that he couldn’t wait to do some damage with the stick.

The stick agreed. He couldn’t wait to be presented at Tribal Council.

He couldn’t wait to save Michael’s skin.

And he couldn’t wait to shove Jeff Probst into the fire.

Reward Challenge Time: The players will hold up a platform using ropes. One by one, they’ll place blocks on the platform to spell the word “Reward.” The first tribe to complete this will win a barbecue with all the fixings. The second place tribe will enjoy kabobs. The winning team will also send someone from the second or third-place team to Ghost Island.

Domenick will sit for Naviti, Laurel will sit for Yanuya.

Result: Naviti took first place even though Bradley was doing his best to rub Donathan the wrong way. Then Yanuya claimed second place. Naviti unanimously decided to send Kellyn to Ghost Island because they wanted to keep the secrets of Ghost Island…er…secret.

At Ghost Island

Kellyn was offered an opportunity to play a game. She had to wager her vote at the next Tribal against a two-in-three shot of getting an advantage. Kellyn decides to “risk it for the biscuit” and is rewarded with the “steal a vote” from “Survivor: Game Changers.” However, now it’s just an extra vote.

And no, you don’t get a whole story about Michaela’s vote.

At Naviti Beach

Bradley is just driving everybody crazy. They’re trying to celebrate their big victory, and he keeps cutting them off.

Bradley admits to having no patience in his normal life…so that’s different from your in-game life how?

Sure enough, Bradley manages to turn the majority of Naviti against him. The four other members agree to vote him off if they go to Tribal, but Domenick seems like he’s on the fence.

At Yanuya Beach

Wendell goes on a little idol hunt after the kabob feast. He manages to locate a clue which leads him to the individual immunity idol that Erik gave away in Micronesia.

Holy cow, this is like Micronesia’s gritty reboot.

At Malolo Beach

Frustrated at being one of the most losing tribes in “Survivor” history, Desiree, Angela, and Michael decide to reverse the curse by burning their tribe’s banner. That should do it.

Immunity Challenge: The tribes will retrieve rings and then…do a ring toss. Wait, that’s it? The first two tribes to put all of their rings on their target will win immunity.

Chelsea sits out for Naviti, while Jenna rides the pine for Yanuya.

Result: Yanuya claimed first place, while Malolo’s banner-burning worked, earning them a second-place finish. Naviti will go to Tribal Council.

Pre-Tribal Politicking

Back at camp, Domenick apologizes for his challenge performance, but Libby assures him that they win as a tribe and they lose as a tribe.

Bradley is back to his old tricks, with Domenick feeling like he’s constantly talking down to everyone.

Later on, Bradley pitches Libby as the vote. Domenick, Donathan, and Chelsea all seem cool with it.

On the other hand, Chelsea and the others are telling Libby that they’re voting for Bradley.

Huh…it’s got to be Libby, right? Ever since Special Agent Philip, people are happy to bring annoying players to the end.

Tribal Time

This was really a low-key affair with neither Libby or Bradley fighting for their lives. That leads me to believe that they both genuinely feel like they’re safe.

However, Bradley is saying that he thinks everyone is a big happy family. It seems like a few people would disagree with that, but nobody does.

Voting Time: No votes are shown.

JPro tallies and returns. He asks if anyone wants to play an idol and…nobody does. We’ve got one vote for Libby, two votes for Bradley, and the seventh person voted out of “Survivor: Ghost Island” is…Bradley.

Wow…another blindside. Total E-lib-ination!

Verdict: There’s got to be more to that vote other than, “Bradley is bugging us.” If not, it’s very short-sighted in a season where classic Naviti has been sticking together. If anything it sends a signal that all bets are off.

Anywho, I’m prepared to say that I’ve really enjoyed this pre-merge.

  • Libby and Donathan – If James is to be believed, there was no split with the Malolo four. Good on them for keeping each other alive.
  • Wendell – Do it, Wendell. Win this game. You’ve got this.
  • Michael – You probably are too young for this reference, but “Goonies never say die,” and neither do you.
  • Chelsea – Hmm…well look who’s worked her way into becoming Domenick’s right hand. Well done.
  • Kellyn – Boom! The only thing keeping you from an A is the fact that you guys left Michael alone.
  • Domenick – I don’t know how I feel about this move. Bradley would have made a phenomenal goat.
  • Angela and Desiree – See Kellyn.
  • Jenna, Sebastian, Laurel, and Chris – I can’t give you full credit if you don’t show your work.

Power Rankings Results: Roark had Bradley in spot twelve, I had him in spot eleven. The current score is Team Roark 65, Team Gordon 67.

Last Week: Roark had James in spot fourteen, while Gordon had him in spot twelve. The current score is Team Roark 53, Team Gordon 56.

Quick Note: Rankings are not based on who the player thinks is most likely to win. The smart strategy is to rank players based on how safe you think they are in the upcoming vote.

1. Laurel: Laurel handles the Chris model confession like a champ. She is playing an exceptional social game and is not going home. It’s a fact. 1. Domenick: He’s packing an idol, he has four alliance members in a tribe of five, and he has a convenient target. He’ll be here next week.
2. Domenick: Dom remains safe. I really don’t have a lot to say on that matter. Everyone seems to like him. He’s super comfortable. He has an idol. Check, check, check. Dom is fine. 2. Kellyn: You’re on a sinking ship, but you’re in charge of what cargo gets jettisoned.
3. Kellyn: Kellyn still has tons of screen time and is in a position within current Malolo that I don’t see changing this week. I just can’t work out a scenario where the others are going to turn on her. 3. Laurel: There’s just something special about watching a master working with a tool.  Be it Hendrix with a guitar…Pujols with a bat…or Laurel with Chris. Simply amazing.
4. Wendell: Whereas everybody hates Chris, everybody loves Wendell. With a presumed target in Chris, and a tribe that seems very safe, Wendell is sitting pretty. Because he’s pretty. Hey Wendell. Still trying. 4. Wendell: What’s up, Probst? I’ll tell you what’s up; you’re killing this game. Between making peace with Chris, fixing your misstep in the challenge, and letting Sea Bass know you were thinking of him, you’re in an amazing spot. Maybe the Philly championship run goes Eagles, Villanova…Wendell…
5. Donathan: According to Dom, Donathan is his boy. That’s enough of an anointing to get him through to next week. 5. Sea Bass: Has a five-person tribe ever had this much challenge muscle? I think Yanuya is super safe this week. But, if they get clipped, nobody is targeting Sea Bass.
6. Sea Bass: I think Sea-bass is good because this tribe is good, but his early alliance with Chris versus Dom and Wendell makes it a possibility that he’s at risk. I say that, but I really think he’s fine. Because Chris is there. 6. Donathan: Mergeville can’t be too far away. I’ve gotta think we’re looking at a deep run for Don Don.
7. Desiree: Des is ascending – at least in terms of screen time. Luckily for her, original Naviti had her back because she pretty unforgivably blew that challenge. On the flip side – they can be pretty confident she won’t win immunity post-merge in any puzzle adjacent challenge. 7. Chelsea: Hey, stranger.
8. Jenna: None of the screen time this past week at Yanuya had to do with alliances or perceptions of people as threats. I strongly believe they aren’t going to Tribal. We just aren’t being set up for that. With that information alone, I think Jenna is safe. Besides that, not a lot of screen time to go off of. 8. Desiree: Oh…Desiree…that challenge…just…you know…I…uh… Yeah, that was pretty bad. Fortunately, you ended up on the right side of the numbers. You should be safe for a while, but maybe you should do a better job of judging your strengths.
9. Chelsea: Everyone needs to get a freaking grip – it is just coffee. Other than that, still utterly mystifed by this person. Where is she? Who likes her and who does she like? I have no ideas. 9. Chris: OK, the “tool” thing in Laurel’s entry was a little harsh. In all honestly, Chris is super cool in real life. And he’s gold on reality television. I hope he sticks around forever.
10. Angela: I wasn’t there, what do I know, but I do think Angela was get-able for Malolo last vote. She’s probably safe because these people are bleeding purple. Unless Kellyn, the fan of the current Malolo tribe, decides to get crafty and cut Angela loose before she becomes erratic post-merge and leaves the all-Naviti alliance. 10. Jenna: Your relationship with Sea Bass means there is never a bad time to target you. I think it’s possible Yunuya will never go to Tribal Council. And for your sake, I hope I’m right.
11. Chris: Chris is the best thing happening right now hands down. He reminds me of Kristin Wiig’s Penelope character. I need him to go very, very far. Sadly, I think Laurel is right, that if they lose he is quite screwed. 11. Bradley: What’s going on in last week’s preview, buddy? It doesn’t look good for you. Hopefully it’s a swerve.
12. Bradley: Bradley is a fan. Bradley is smart. Bradley knows exactly what he is doing in these confessionals. Bradley also seems to be in trouble – the “next week on” does not bode well for him. 12. Libby: Is Libby the devil with the body of an angel? James didn’t totally disagree when I talked to him last week. She needs a merge or friends and quick.
13. Libby: Because of his idol, anyone in Dom’s crosshairs is in trouble. Libby is definitely someone to be concerned about if Naviti loses next immunity.  13. Angela: I think the best thing you have working in your favor is how annoyed Kellyn seemed when she learned Wendell and Domenick had turned on you.
14. Michael: I’m keeping Michael on the bottom just because it’s been a rather dull Malolo Panonging the last few weeks. Not a big indication that that’ll switch up next week if this iteration of Malolo goes to tribal again. 14. Michael: I don’t think burning the tribe flag is going to help your tribe win immunity. You’re going to need to burn Chris, Sea Bass, Wendell, Laurel…

‘Survivor’ Castaway James – “(Kellyn) Stonewalled My Move, and Yet I Can’t Bring Myself to Hate Her”

Gordon Holmes: Heading in to last night’s Tribal, were you thinking you had Angela and Michael locked down?
James Lim: Yeah. That’s why I reacted to the blindside. I knew I was on the bottom of the tribe as far as numbers. But, the impression that I got over the course of the afternoon was that I had done a reasonably good job flipping Angela to our side. In the whole me and Michael vs. Kellyn and Desiree dynamic, Angela was going to come with us. They didn’t show much, but we had some really deep conversations. Both on Naviti 2.0 and Malolo 3.0. There was a time where we talked about loyalty and what that means to me. And I used that to pitch to her, that I realize I’m on the bottom. If you repay to me what we did for you, we can become tight allies and I’ll never write your name down. I thought she was moved by it, so I was a little shocked by the 4-1 result.

Holmes: It looked like Laurel and Donathan were going to start working with Wendell and Domenick before the second swap. Did you know that was going on?
Lim: Yeah, the backstory to all of that was; the Malolo four, we were a rock-solid bunch. Basically what was happening was me and Libby were working the Chris/Angela angle and Laurel and Donathan were working the Domenick/Wendell angle. Then we’d get together as a foursome and debrief. It was a way to see which pair would be a better pair to side with.
Holmes: So, a little divide and conquer action there.
Lim: Yes. One of my biggest regrets was not throwing one or both of the challenges. If we had an absolute upper-hand, we should have capitalized on it more.

Holmes: Morgan said you suck in challenges. However, you beat Kellyn in a puzzle, so you can’t be that bad. During that Morgan vote, was your goal to break up a potential Morgan/Libby alliance?
Lim: Partially, yes. Laurel did a good job pitching for Morgan over Wendell. But from my point of view, it was a good spot for us to sever the bond Libby was building with Morgan. It was only three days, but it was very impressive how tight those two got. I think day nine was the right time to draw Libby back into the Malolo circle. I’m glad that is the path she chose to take.
Holmes: How hard did Libby fight to keep Morgan?
Lim: Harder than what was shown. The conversation I had with her at the well was a lot longer and a lot more emotional than what was shown. It came down to us four sticking as a group and having the exact same target. And when she saw the three of us were locked in on Morgan, it came down to her. I’ll never forget the moment when the final vote came out and I really thought, “Is it going to be Angela? Is it going to be Morgan?” It was personally awesome to see that that entire strategic plan had come to fruition that night.
Holmes: Domenick is trying to put the target on Libby’s back now. He’s calling her a “devil in an angel’s body.” Is he overselling it or is there a more conniving side we’re not seeing of Libby?
Lim: Coming from his perspective, I wouldn’t blame him. From Naviti’s point of view, Libby is the cute blonde that slit Morgan’s throat. I think the impression Wendell and Domenick has was, “These four people kicked out asses, but Libby is the one who really did it.” And I was more that happy to let them have that impression. I wanted to call the shots from under the radar. But, Domenick has a great point. She’s a great player and someone to look out for.

Holmes: Alright, word association time. Let’s start with…Donathan.
Lim:
Heart of gold. One of the brightest people I’ve met. He was my day-one ride-or-die.
Holmes: Stephanie Johnson?
Lim: One of a kind. I’m blessed that I got to meet her. She’s a role model for women, all women watching “Survivor.” We’ll be family and friends for life.
Holmes: Kellyn?
Lim: She stonewalled my move, and yet I can’t bring myself to hate her. We really bonded deeply and shared some personal stories. I can’t say enough good things about her as a person.
Holmes: Desiree?
Lim: We come from such different backgrounds. It was tough to connect on the island. But, her story is so powerful and unique. I really respect her for that.
Holmes: Morgan?
Lim: (Laughs) She came at me in her exit press. But, we bonded well at Ponderosa. She’s positive, energetic, it was amazing to bond with her.
Holmes: Brendan?
Lim: One of the most quality people that I’ve ever met in my life.
Holmes: Laurel?
Lim: She is calm, she is genuine, she’s one of my best friends from the cast. It was nice to put together “Survivor’s” first Harvard/Yale alliance with her.
Holmes: Libby?
Lim: She’s a cute blonde and I trust her. She’s an amazing human being.
Holmes: Gonzalez?
Lim: Strong, persevering woman. She deserved better.
Holmes: Jacob?
Lim: We’ve hung out a lot post-game and he’s just so real. He’s a nice guy to be around.
Holmes: Jenna?
Lim: She’s real. If we were friends in college we would have had a great time together.
Holmes: Angela?
Lim: She has such a different background from the rest of us. It’s hard to read her as a person. But, she really opened up to me in the later stages. That bond, despite the fact that she backstabbed me, I truly respect her for her life’s journey and her service to the country.
Holmes: Domenick?
Lim: What you see is what you get. He’s loud, he’s passionate. He’s a schemer, he’s a hustler. And he’s a fun guy to be around. He’s an amazing friend to have.
Holmes: Wendell?
Lim: The most likable guy on this season. He’s one of the types that, he’s playing an under-the-radar game. He just makes you like him so much. He’s like your bro out there.
Holmes: Chris?
Lim: Over-the-top, huge personality. He’s a fun guy to hang out with. I loved every second with him. He’s such an entertainer.
Holmes: And let’s finish with Michael.
Lim: The savviest eighteen-year-old I’ve ever met. There was nobody like him in my high school senior class.

Holmes: Jacob knew you were a Harvard-educated track star before the season began. Did that ever come out while he was in the game?
Lim: Oh yes, we went on a walk one-on-one. And he said, “I want to play with you, but I think you’re lying about everything.” And I basically was like, what is this guy trying to get at? I think he had only told Stephanie Johnson that he really knew who I was.

Holmes: Your farewell last night was very classy and thoughtful. Was it important to you to tip your cap on your way out?
Lim: I think going in I wanted to portray the person I am in real life. And that meant I was going to play a game that had respect for other players. Honestly, when you hear your name come up at Tribal Council and you get voted out, you kind of blackout. And so, my turnaround farewell to the tribe, I think it was the right thing to say. It feels good to know that I left “Survivor” with a classy gesture to the rest of my cast and the entire “Survivor” community.

‘Survivor: Ghost Island’ Episode 6 Recap – Tonight, Is the Night…Where Two Become Three

March 28, 2018

“Survivor: Ghost Island” (CBS)

QUICK NOTE: XFINITY.com is the place to be for all of your bug-eatin’, back-stabbin’, “Survivor” coverage. During the season we’ll have insightful weekly Power Rankings with Roark Luskin, exit interviews, and full episode recaps. Follow me on Twitter (@gordonholmes) for up-to-the-minute updates.

Last Week: Chris threw a strike, Bradley talked to Mike, and Stephanie took a hike.

39 Days, 20 People, 1 “Survivor” Blog

The tribes as they currently stand…

The Naviti Tribe (wearing purple)
Angela, 42 – Army Veteran
Chris, 27 – Male Model
Donathan, 26 – Caretaker
Domenick, 38 – Construction Supervisor
James, 24 – Business Analyst
Libby, 24 – Social Media Strategist
Laurel, 29 – Financial Consultant
Wendell, 33 – Furniture Company Owner

The Malolo Tribe (wearing orange)
Bradley, 26 – Law Student
Chelsea, 24 – EMT/Professional Cheerleader
Desiree, 21 – Student
Jenna, 23 – Advertising Account Executive
Kellyn, 31 – Career Counselor
Michael, 18 – Real Estate Agent
Sebastian, 22 – Fishing Guide

Whoa…we don’t waste any time with the fallout from last week’s Tribal. Actually, seeing as it was a unanimous vote, there might not have been any drama to show.

Swappin’ Time

So, the Malolo-low and the Navitians arrive for a challenge and are immediately instructed to drop their buffs.

When Probst asks if they’re ready to find out how it’s going to shake out, Donathan gets the line of the night by saying, “We have no choice.” Nope, you don’t.

The buffs are claimed…and curiously…five of them are green. Uh oh…three tribes. The new tribe will be known as Yanuya.

Alright, we’ve got…

The Naviti Tribe (wearing purple)
Bradley, 26 – Law Student
Chelsea, 24 – EMT/Professional Cheerleader
Donathan, 26 – Caretaker
Domenick, 38 – Construction Supervisor
Libby, 24 – Social Media Strategist

The Malolo Tribe (wearing orange)
Angela, 42 – Army Veteran
Desiree, 21 – Student
James, 24 – Business Analyst
Kellyn, 31 – Career Counselor
Michael, 18 – Real Estate Agent

The Yanuya Tribe (wearing green)
Chris, 27 – Male Model
Jenna, 23 – Advertising Account Executive
Laurel, 29 – Financial Consultant
Sebastian, 22 – Fishing Guide
Wendell, 33 – Furniture Company Owner

Initial Thoughts: Yanuya looks like a challenge juggernaut, but they’re going to have to create a new camp. On the other tribes, I’d imagine James, Michael, and Libby are in some serious trouble.

At Yanuya Beach

Everybody is in good spirits, despite having to start from scratch. Wendell also busts out the bro move of the season by bringing Sebastian a smelly shell he had left behind at Naviti.

Later on, Wendell and Chris agree to put the Domenick situation behind them. Wendell tells him it’s a “New Day” which makes the wrestling fan in me happy.

Wendell is psyched to have a challenge beast on his side, but he isn’t thrilled about having to listen to Chris boast about things.

CUT TO: Chris bragging about winning a volleyball tournament, modeling, his charisma, etc.

CUT TO: Chris saying he doesn’t tell people about being a model because people tend to think that models are self-absorbed. Also, people think that models are dumb and that might not be “beneficuary” to him.

So good.

At Malolo Beach

Desiree and Kellyn are hoping to put together an original Naviti alliance, but the story of how Wendell and Domenick tried to vote out Angela doesn’t fill them with a ton of hope.

Meanwhile, Michael and James decide to get some original Malolo action going.

At Naviti Beach

Bradley immediately gives us what we tuned in for by complaining about the “squalor” of Malolo Beach. I’d watch a show of him reviewing hotels.

It seems like classic Naviti has the power with Domenick warning everyone about how devious Libby is. Even referring to her as a devil in an angel’s body.

Really? Libby?

Immunity Challenge Time: The players will be blindfold and tethered to another member of their team. They will wander out in search of puzzle pieces with only a caller to guide them. Once they have all three bags of puzzle pieces, the caller will have to lead two blindfolded members through the puzzle. The first two tribes to complete the puzzle will win immunity.

The callers will be Wendell, Desiree, and Domenick.

Quick Aside: Blindfolded puzzle?! That’s cold.

Another Quick Aside: Leading two blindfolded people through a puzzle? No way. I’d have one player stand there with their hands in their pockets.

Yet Another Quick Aside: I like Desiree. I’m OK if I never hear her scream again.

Result: Malolo had a huge lead, but Desiree couldn’t get them through the puzzle. Yanuya and Naviti win immunity.

Pre-Tribal Politicking

Desiree and Kellyn are hoping to bring Angela on board to get rid of James. But, Kellyn isn’t completely sold that Angela is in on the plan.

Michael and James decide to make a run for Angela’s vote hoping that the time James and Angela spent together can bridge the gap.

James and Angela chat and it seems like Angela could possibly be swayed.

Tribal Time

Probst immediately points out that Malolo might be one of the worst tribes ever when it comes to challenges.

WHAT?! But Jacob said…

In other news; Desiree takes full responsibility for the loss saying that she was hoping this would be her chance to shine. Angela responds by saying when you step up, your tribe is hoping you don’t strike out.

Also, James makes an interesting point that the original tribes were picked at random, so why stick with them?

Voting Time: Desiree votes for James, James votes for Desiree, and the rest of the votes are lost to the magic of editing.

JPro tallies and returns. He asks if anyone wants to play an idol and…nobody does. We’ve got one vote for James, one vote for Desiree, one vote for James, and the sixth person voted out of “Survivor: Ghost Island” is…James.

Verdict: Wow, I did not see a unanimous vote for James coming. If there was going to be any kind of surprise, I thought maybe Angela would end up going out because she wouldn’t commit to either side.

Oof…that’s four strong players in a row. (No offense, Jacob.)

  • Kellyn – This tribe is definitely going to lose again, but she’s firmly in the driver’s seat.
  • Michael – Hey, a guy has got to do what a guy has got to do. If he was working angles with Des and Kellyn before the swap, it makes sense to keep them.
  • Laurel – If someone wants to talk about themselves, let them talk. You’re killing this season. Bravo.
  • Wendell – A shell? Brilliant. Little things like that go a long way.
  • Domenick – Good job rallying the troops, but be careful that you’re not overselling things.
  • Desiree – I think a cooler head could have brought your tribe a win. But, the vote put you into a power position.
  • Chris – No self-awareness. Just…none.
  • Angela – Why were you making Kellyn nervous? Pick a side…quickly.
  • Libby – Whatever vibe you’re putting out there is turning Domenick off. Figure it out and course correct.
  • Chelsea, Donathan, Jenna, Sebastian, Bradley – I can’t give you full credit if you don’t show your work.

Power Rankings Results: Roark had James in spot fourteen, I had him in spot twelve. The current score is Team Roark 53, Team Gordon 56.

‘Survivor: Ghost Island’ Power Rankings Round 4 – ‘Swap! In the Name of Love’ Edition

March 27, 2018

“Survivor: Ghost Island” (CBS)

QUICK NOTE: XFINITY.com is the place to be for all of your bug-eatin’, back-stabbin’, “Survivor” coverage. During the season we’ll have insightful weekly Power Rankings with Roark Luskin, exit interviews, and full episode recaps. Follow me on Twitter (@gordonholmes) for up-to-the-minute updates.

The Rules: Each week our two combatants will create separate power rankings. The ranking of the person who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the players will earn. For example, if Kellyn is voted out this episode, Roark will receive four points and Gordon will receive three points. At the end of the season, the person with the most points will be named the “Survivor: Ghost Island” Power Rankings Challenge Champion.

Last Week: Roark had Stephanie in spot fifteen while Gordon had her in spot sixteen. The current score is Team Roark 39, Team Gordon 44.

Quick Note: Rankings are not based on who the player thinks is most likely to win. The smart strategy is to rank players based on how safe you think they are in the upcoming vote.

Roark’s Score: 39

1. Laurel: Laurel’s game is the perfect get-me-to-the-merge game. She is making moves, but not ruffling feathers, and rather than talk she seems to be listening. I think she is very safe. 1. Domenick: Is this the part of the afternoon where Gordon complains because ranking swaps is frustrating and involves too many variables? Totally. Anywho…Domenick’s holding the only known idol. He should be good.
2. Domenick: If this swap shakes out not in Dom’s favor – which, honestly, I don’t even know what that looks like – he will just play his idol. He’s safe. 2. Laurel: I’m not sure if anyone is in a better position right now. She has her Domenick/Wendell options and her classic Malolo options.  She’s also a challenge threat. She just needs to keep an eye on Donathan.
3. Bradley: The problem is another swap changes everything. Without a swap, this group is squarely in the power position and it doesn’t seem to be shifting. Which lead to ~*RivEtiNg*~ television last Wednesday. 3. Kellyn: The Puzzle Whisperer was knocked down a peg last week, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The odds are she’ll end up surrounded by supportive treasure boxes.
4. Kellyn: We see way too much of her for her to be going anywhere any time soon. 4. Wendell: He’s a likable challenge champ who has probably only upset a handful of people (Chris and Chris’s buddy). It’d take a disastrous swap to hurt his momentum.
5. Wendell: Both Wendell and Dom have made cross-tribal bonds, which suggests that another tribe swap could produce some exciting results. I think this clearly spells safety for these two. 5. Bradley: It looks like Michael’s idol moment was the wake-up call Bradley needed. Fortunately, the two people he upset the most won’t be on the jury.
6. Donathan: Laurel handled him so much better than I would have. Oh, coffee reminds you of someone? Really? Seeing as 83% of adults consume coffee, it just doesn’t tug at my heartstrings. Donathan and Laurel are the only two original Malolos that strike me as very safe going into this swap. 6. Donathan: Becoming a swing vote in a little alliance that’s already kind of a swing vote? Too complicated for me. I’d stick with the plan and let Laurel lead the charge…for now.
7. Sebastian: See Jenna. He’s just more safe because Naviti. Hope it isn’t another throwing challenge though. He’s really bad at those. 7. Chelsea: Quietly contributing cheerleader. No need to send her packing anytime soon.
8. Chelsea: Still at a loss. 8. Desiree: Desiree seems to be playing a sneaky good game. I loved the moment where her and Bradley touched base after she checked Stephanie’s bag. I wish they’d show more of her.
9. Desiree: Des has actually been a central player in these boot conversations. She steers the dialogue nicely and seems well respected in her group. 9. Angela: Hey.
10. Jenna: I feel great about Laurel and Donathan. I feel good about Jenna. They are clearly gearing up for a Jenna / Sea-bass flirtation story line. And since we aren’t blind and have access to social media we know that they are very very together. This tells me that they both are safe. 10. Libby: As the least threatening classic Malolo member, I think Libby will be fine no matter how the swap shakes out.
11. Angela: Even though Naviti has the overall numbers Angela and Chris are undeniably on the bottom of that totem pole. 11. Sea Bass: Oh…Sea Bass. May you forever reign as this season’s quote machine. However, I am worried that this Jenna thing is going to put an early target on your back.
12. Chris: There are third party people on set so that the challenges can’t be rigged for any one contestant. But could that arbiter call in sick one day so Chris can be given a rap battle challenge? The audience deserves this. 12. James: I wonder how people view you, James. Do Domenick and Wendell know you were the main architect behind the Morgan vote? If so, that could be bad news after the swap.
13. Libby: *long grass emoji* *eyes emoji* *long grass emoji* (that’s me searching for this person) 13. Jenna: There’s a YouTube playlist everyone should check out before going on the show. It features starting fires, opening coconuts, and now braiding hair. Cozying up to the Bassy one may have bought her some time, but it will eventually come with a price.
14. James: James’ confessional about having the numbers because the Malolos are in with Chris shows that he doesn’t know what’s really going on – that Laurel has hooked up with Dom and Wendell. I’m not terribly worried about James because the swap is going to mess all this up anyway, but this did stick out to me. 14. Michael: Nobody needed this swap more than Michael. With the Sea Bass/Jenna romance on the horizon, he was about to become a marked man. And Malolo was getting stomped in the challenges. He’s not out of the woods yet, but this may buy him some time.
15. Michael: I still believe Michael is on really thin ice and could be the next casualty of a bad numbers situation. I see you trying things out there, buddy! 15. Chris: Wow! Chris went all Rick Vaughn on that challenge last week. Then he went all…maybe…Vanilla Ice on the mic. I’d hate to see him go, but that Dom feud is going to come to a head sooner or later.

Gordon Holmes: How are you holding up?
Stephanie Johnson: It’s been rough, but at least I got my own dedicated torch-snuffing music. That was pretty awesome.
Holmes: I know! I always get a little emotional during the snuffing, but I was like, “What are you guys doing! You know I’m sensitive!”
Johnson: (Laughs) I hope you cried as much as I did, because I sure cried.
Holmes: I’m not going to lie, it got a little dusty in the Holmes household. How did the youngsters take it?
Johnson: They’re six and eight so they did not know the outcome until last night. It was really rough. It was a little heartbreaking, they were devastated. We were all bawling our eyes out and my oldest son looked me in the eyes and gave me a big bear hug and said, “Mom, I’m so proud of you.” And then I lost it. Everything that I had said on the show, everything that I had worked so hard for, it made it all OK.
Holmes: I would imagine growing up with a mom who’s a tri-athlete, and an author, and a world traveler, they’d already know you’re pretty much a badass.
Johnson: (Laughs)

Holmes: Last night felt like an old-school episode of “Survivor.” We’ve got no idols, no advantages, we have an alliance that doesn’t seem to have any cracks. You’re just left to your own devices. Looking back, was there anything else you could have possibly done?
Johnson: The second that I got back to camp after Ghost Island, I realized it wasn’t the same tribe that I had left. Twenty four hours makes a huge difference. I brought Jenna and Michael to the side and I started plotting and scheming. And Jenna wouldn’t even look me in the eyes. It was at that point that I realized that they had made an arrangement and they were going to flip. Something was different, so I completely ditched them. I worked on the relationships I had with Naviti while looking for an idol. But, I worked Bradley, Kellyn, and Chelsea, trying to…like you said, “Old School.” If you do this for me, I’m in your corner. Use my vote. But I came up short.
Holmes: I understand braiding hair is huge on that tribe. That could have been an in.
Johnson: I was the hair braider!
Holmes: (Laughs)
Johnson: Jenna probably told him, “Look, if you vote her out instead of me, I’ve got your back, I can braid your hair.” Sea Bass and me bonded for hours over me braiding his hair. I did all sorts of braids.
Holmes: Emotional braid theft? That’s cold.
Johnson: I wouldn’t put it past either of them. I don’t doubt it. (Laughs)

Holmes: You were the only person left on classic Malolo-low that knows about the Legacy Advantage. Had you told anyone about it?
Johnson: I didn’t tell a soul. I really thought I could leverage it a little later on in the game. I had no idea who Morgan was close to. I tried to get that information from Naviti after Morgan was out. But, I didn’t tell anyone. And before I was voted out, I was thinking, “Screw that. I’m not giving you guys an advantage because I know I’m going home. I’m taking this to the Ghost Island grave.”

Holmes: I was on Instagram earlier and it seems like Kellyn is a huge Stephanie fan. Did you two became besties out there?
Johnson: We really did. They didn’t show Kellyn and I, but we had a lot of conversations. Our life storylines are very similar. We really bonded. We got really close out there. And I didn’t know that she was crying at my Tribal. I was in a complete daze. I didn’t know Jenna or her were crying.
Holmes: Last week Brendan said that he caught Kellyn tearing up when he was talking about going home before his birthday. It seems like she doesn’t have a poker face.
Johnson: She really doesn’t. She’s an amazing woman, but she has no poker face at all. You can read her like a book.

Holmes: Alright, word association time. Let’s start with Brendan.
Johnson: Big brother that I never had. He’s one of the most strong and honorable men that I’ve ever met.
Holmes: Desiree?
Johnson: Misunderstood. I say that because in the game we didn’t connect, but outside of the game we are very similar.
Holmes: Laurel?
Johnson: She’s a beast, she’s a silent, powerful beast.
Holmes: Libby?
Johnson: Sunshine. (Laughs) She just makes you smile.
Holmes: Kellyn?
Johnson: My soul sister.
Holmes: Jacob?
Johnson: The most creative man I know. And actually, he is the one who pushed me to get my book published.
Holmes: Sea Bass?
Johnson: A big ball of love, passion, and silliness.
Holmes: James?
Johnson: Loyal, highly intelligent…and extremely easy to talk to.
Holmes: Chelsea?
Johnson: Very reserved, but in a good way. I don’t think she opens up to many people. But, she opened up to me out there and we became pretty close.
Holmes: Michael?
Johnson: Hot. (Laughs) He’s charming. He’s going to find great success in life.
Holmes: Gonzalez?
Johnson: The most kind-hearted soul ever. She’s a fighter.
Holmes: Jenna?
Johnson: Out there I thought of her as a little sister. After last night I want to pull a Morgan and say, “Don’t trust the cute blonde.”
Holmes: Donathan?
Johnson: Lovable, he’s got a rare innocence to him. But, he’s one of the strongest people I’ve met.
Holmes: And let’s finish with Bradley.
Johnson: He’s complicated. On one hand I feel like he’s a whiny bitch. On the other hand, he and I had some really deep, heartfelt conversations.

Holmes: Let’s stick with the Bradley thing for a bit. I feel the same way in that it seems like he goes too strongly in one direction, realizes the error of his way, and then quickly course corrects.
Johnson: Yes. And the one thing with Bradley is that he’s not malicious. He’s not mean-spirited, he just complains. He’s snarky. I think that’s who he is. But at the same time, we had a lot of great talks.

Holmes: It feels like you and Jenna were close out there. Aside from her not looking at you when you returned to Ghost Island, was there anything else she did that felt like a betrayal?
Johnson: No, Jenna was my day-one girl. We hit the beach running. We were always together. We plotted to poison Bradley. Ninety seven percent of the stuff we talked about…they couldn’t even air it because it was not appropriate. We had the same sense of humor, she was really like the little sister that I never had. But, when it came down to it being us three and I was gone, she has a relationship with Michael too. She had to do something to save herself. It sucks. But, I feel like my best friend backstabbed me. But, I don’t hold it against her because it was a good move. If I had been there, I would have thrown one of them under the bus too. She did what she had to do. I just think it sucks that she chose Michael instead of me. But, that’s because I’m kind of a feminist.
Holmes: Just to clarify; when you say you were going to poison Bradley, you meant figuratively poisoning the tribe against him, not literally poisoning him, correct?
Johnson: Oh no, we wanted to poison him. (Laughs)
Holmes: (Laughs)
Johnson: We were picking berries and leaves and we were thinking of all the ways we could get him med-evac’d and then we wouldn’t have to deal with him anymore.
Holmes: That’s terrible.
Johnson: You know, he came over and just (expletive deleted) all over our camp. He was arrogant, I did not like him those first days. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Holmes: OK, but he was figuratively (expletive deleted) all over camp. Unlike you literally wanting to poisoning him.
Johnson: Yes. He didn’t literally (expletive deleted) all over everything. But we did want to poison him.

Holmes: I’m a little afraid to ask this question; was there anything out there that we didn’t get to see that you wish we had?
Johnson: Umm…
Holmes: Other than planning a potential homicide?
Johnson: (Laughs) I’m really glad they showed my ambition to look for idols. There wasn’t a single day or moment where I was not digging through the most disgusting, bug-infested logs. I tore that camp apart every single day.
Holmes: The worst thing you can do is go out there and be a bump on log. I said this to Brendan last week, and I’ll say it to you too. If there’s ever another Second Chance vote, I’ve got you back.
Johnson: Aww…thank you! They knocked out some players. Every single one of us was there to play.
